T-Mobile's Magic / Sapphire / myTouch / G2 getting 5 megapixel cam?
It's pretty unusual for a manufacturer to take a global model and swap out a component as significant as a camera for one carrier, but it looks like that might just happen with T-Mobile USA's myTouch -- or G2, or Magic, or Sapphire, or whatever the heck it ends up being called. Boy Genius Report's leaked picture of the back of the carrier-branded handset prominently says "5.0," and since it's safe to assume it's not packing a 5.0-liter V8, this is probably referring to sensor res. That would be a marked upgrade from the 3.2 megapixels launching on the Magic everywhere else -- and interestingly, this kinda falls in line with T-Mobile USA's seemingly active effort to launch high-megapixel devices across the lineup over the past several months. This is more solid evidence than a spec sheet -- since spec sheets have a tendency to be filled with fallacies and typos -- but we'll hold off on saying this is a lock until the phone launches.

It's gonna take more than a 5 meg cam to kill the iPhone,.LOL
Seriously who would commit to having this phone till may of 2011,??
Why do I have a feeling that all these troll accounts are the same 3 people?
Any smartphone will be terribly outdated after 2 years. Even the first gen iPhone doesn't really cut it if you are serious about data apps and transfer.
Mind, I don't think you need to be on the cutting edge unless you're a business user.
i'm beginning to think Apple is paying these trolls
I doubt they can have quality like the nokias have with their 5 mega pixel cameras.
exactly. there's no flash and i highly doubt that's AF either
Also, 5 megapixel on such a small form factor can be really noisy unless the sensor is really upgraded.
But I guess that's how marketing goes, True HD is only 2 megapixels...
barcode scanning programs such as shop savvy REQUIRES an auto focus camera.
Here is my problem with HTC. I had a Wing, and now the G1. Their cameras SUCK. My girlfriend has an iPhone, and the camera, while not great, is still much better. Give me a GOOD 3.2 sensor, and decent lens over a mediocre 5 MP sensor, with the SAME crappy lens! I have liked both of my phones, but really, the camera functionality leaves a LOT to be desired. I don't even care about the lack of lamp/flash. I just want it to take decent pics, in GOOD light.
wish they added a 3.5mm ... this/samsung i7500/g2 cant decide! or if this comes in black i might as well settle for this in cupcake
Are there any other names we need to know about?
Wasn't this already known since the FCC filings?
Yeah! Why is everybody acting like this is news?
I'd like to have the 5.0 with a ragtop down so my hair can blow
My G1 takes better photos than my friend's iphone 3g, so yes I believe the iphone's camera is worse than the G1's.
More megapixels doesn't necessarily better quality images, that is why iPhone is better.
That was good. Thanks for the laugh.
If there is one thing that the iphone has never proven its better image quality.
Nice try though. Keep up the stretching.
iDiot. The iphone camera quality is terrible even compared to other 2MP camera phones out there, let alone compared to the 3.2MP and 5.0MP ones. You == fail;
HAHAH the iPhone camera blows. lol
You guys really think the iPhone camera is worse than the G1?
I can see a lot more detail in my girlfriend's phone, than I can with my G1. With a LOT of post-processing, I can pull out acceptable snapshots, but nothing I am proud of.
I don't think I can do this good, with my G1... http://www.kelbytraining.com/iphonecontest/
i see boobies!
Great, more crappy cell phone photos - 5 million crappy pixels of more narcissism.
They'll never be able to get a phone/video/still cam/ mp3 into one device (since stand-alone devices will still blow them away, focusing on one main function).
Like the white look though - wouldn't mind seeing it sticking out of a nice pair of tight white jeans on a hottie.
lol
No keyboard, no thanks. No full qwery tactile keyboard and all it is, is another toy. Cy@
this can't be legit. there's no "myfaves" logo on it anywhere.
There's no MyFaves logo on the back of the Current G1. Chill out, guy.
DUH... we already knew the US Sapphire will have a 5MP camera. Hell I am sure I read it on Engadget.
More megapixels without better optics is worthless.
amen. This is not an 'upgrade' by any means.
Are we really going to make a big deal about a 5 megapixel camera these days? 5 isn't much to begin with... and 5 over 3.5 isn't really much of an improvement if it's going to be another crappy cell phone camera lens. Why the photo quality above and beyond "I can recognize my drunken buddy" on a cell phone matters to anyone I can't fathom.
given a good 5.0 sensor, if the software is crappy as the G1, what's the point?
Does anyone know why all these seemingly really nice HTC phones don't have flash with their cameras?
Pfft. HTC certainly REMOVE cameras for US networks all the time...
i wish they would leave the videoconferencing camera on, at least you can use it with Att on 3g, not the best but hey its something
I like the overall design.. but the Call Send and End buttons are way to small/thin. Seems more like a camera with a phone than vice versa to me.
This looks like the prototype version from a few months ago, the actual production version that they launched for Vodafone was fixed to have bigger buttons.
Oh really? That's good to hear, thanks!
5 Megapixel or 125 megapixels, if it handles like a dog (like the G1) then it's pointless.
You should try the camera in Android 1.5 on the G1, its literally 5 times as fast to take a picture. On 1.0/1.1 the camera speed was a joke, but its no longer an issue.
Far better than the new iphone already!! I bet I can even bluetooth to my computer from the phone, unlike the iphone
You actually can't on Android....
just hurry and release it!
That, my friend, is a nice looking phone. I'm a big fan of the iPhone, and this is really nice.
Yeah, I know - Apple fanboys aren't supposed to like other companies' products. Oh, well.
Wait just a damn minute here. Is T-Mobile reverting to the awful early version's face buttons that everybody hated? Vodaphone's version has much better buttons on the front.
Boooorrrriiiinnnngggg.
I been using my AT&T Tilt for awhile now and have never been really satisfied. I've been checking around and looking at a lot of phones. the carrier and service don't seem to be an issue. But yesterday I was in Best Buy and while looking a petite Asian lady picked up a phone, not sure which one, a Propel I would guess, but it was what she said that struck a nerve. "It fits my hands perfectly!" It was an epipfhany! That's whats wrong with these phones--They are made for petite humans with small hands and fingers. (She was about 4'10", maybe 90 lbs., with tiny cute little fingers.)
I'm six feet and my thumb covers almost three numbers on my phone, which makes it a real pain to dail anyone, not to mention doing much of anything else.
Sooo, to all those phone engineers, I could be wrong, but I personally would use my phone a lot more if it were about 1/8 to 1/4 bigger.
I know this is asking a lot. After all the phones are made in a place where 6' humans are a rarity. Still, if enough of us complain...
Firstly ... how many G2 devices are there. Vodafone has one, T-Moble is bring one which looks different.
Secondly ... I went into a Vodafone store to checkout the latest software and was very disappointed. Where has all the smooth transition between the screens gone, where has the landscape view on the home screen gone and what happen to the small zooming wheel on the maps and pictures. It looks like they have gone backwards.
Finally ... I do not care how many mega pixels Nokia have. They make cheap feeling device with slow unresponsible software.
thankyou
A lot of people still believe a higher mp = better pics. It's pretty sad.
well higher Megapixels do help, but yes i undertdand ehay you mean, a good lens, flash and processing software do go a long way
The old style buttons indicate these pictures are old and unreliable.
