Dell Mini 10 6-cell battery gets pictured
Dell finally started offering the Mini 10 with a six-cell battery just a couple weeks ago, and it looks like the first batch of orders has started to arrive. As expected, it's a big honking six-cell battery hanging off the edge of an otherwise sleek netbook, but it should provide hours of Atom-powered XP fun. Sadly, current Mini 10 owners can't pick one up separately yet, but we're guessing that'll change soon enough.

If it's going to stick out like that, might as well have a 9-cell.
that's true, the wind 6 cell its very subtle, it still even fits in the original sleeve case
I hate unicorns.
lol. That post was meant for darthgault, but I quite like the randomness it adds to this thread.
I like the randomness too :)
Seems strange that all those things have round cells when the rest of the world's devices have flat cells, I guess not even the abundance of flat batteries for cameras and cellphones can beat the cheapness of round cells
Oh great! A casing like a vacuum cleaner!? When do we get electronics that actually feel like hightech? Oh, i forgot.. apple provides them!
Did you mean to say high priced?
And they are non-user replaceable. ;p
Although I don't agree with the Apple-esque nature of this comment, I do agree on the basis of extended batteries generally being really ugly on Windows machines. I'll take the battery life hit if I don't have to see a battery sticking out the bottom or back of my notebook. I've always loved that all of Apple's machines are perfectly flat on the bottom with no openings.
looks aside, I think having the battery stick out like that puts the keyboard at a more comfortable position to type on and raises the screen up a bit to a more comfortable viewing height
Oh great! A comment like an incoherent rambling!? When do we get comments that actually sound like they aren't from ignorant douchebags? Oh, i forgot.. he's an apple fanboy!
i think you missed the point of a netbook ... they are supposed low tech and uber affordable ... i'm running my Dell Mini 9 with Windows 7 and am quite happy with my $200 investment ... you can't even get a hardrive from Apple for that price.
Plus no unicorns were killed in the making of any of my Dells.
You are right. Apples non-existent 300 dollar laptop is alot more sleek than this piece of crap...
Some day, Apple will have a competitor. Dell has already won me back for my next purchase with their Inspiron 15n.
How about one for the mini 9?
How about giving Dell Mini 9 owners an official 6 or 8 cell battery!?
No thanks, I'll stick with my Eee 1000HE- averaging 8 hours per charge on stock battery and it doesn't look like it has some kind of growth coming out of the bottom.
AMEN! I have the same machine and you can't even tell it has a battery! That's how a netbook/laptop is SUPPOSE to look. Not like it has some after thought of a battery sticking out of it like some cancerous growth. Ugh.
Completely agree! I love the battery on my 1000HE, along with the fantastic keyboard (sure, it's still cramped and they screwed the right shift, otherwise a great chiklet). And you're right, the small "protrusion" is built into the look of the netbook.
everyone else has figured how to make a 6cell battery be part of the body... Dell couldn't...? This is disgusting... In ugliness that's equivalent to 12cell battery for eee (which gives it 15hrs run time)...
The 6 cell Acer Aspire One doesn't look too bad.
Nevermind, got here too late.
Wtf is the trend with making the battery stick up like that? its stupid
Why not go with a hammerhead design to keep the bottom flat and still add extra juice
If the battery were to protrude straight out the back the screen would have no tilt at all. Mind you that is with Dell's design. Acer's battery sticks down as well though not that the extent of Dell.
Looks like an extended battery youd find on any normal laptop, that said. This is a netbook, isnt the idea of a netbook small size, small price, and long battery life? Dell should have designed this thing around a 6 cell battery in the first place. Dell has been cranking out the crappiest computers someone can imagine lately havent they. Using their big name to slack off in the design department. Did one of the american car companies buy them?
You say lately like they ever produce quality machines. Every Dell I have owned or worked with has been a sub par piece of crap.
From a practical point of view, it's a great idea to make the extended battery stick out downwards so that it raises the bottom; this helps the airflow and prevents overheating.
Yeah it's OK, assuming you don't use it as a portable device...
How the fuck could you design something like this? Just look how ugly it is. For fuck sake, Dell!
tilted keyboard, good
higher screen position, good
more airflow, good
I like that it sticks out the bottom rather than the back.
The extended battery I bought for my Toshiba laptop sticks out the back, and it looks ridiculous. Sticking out the bottom at least adds some function (as described by AayJay).
Woot, Engadget posted my pictures! :)
looks like the mini grew a nutsack! LOL
Does the Dell get hot enough that it needs to be propped up like that? Yeesh. Just make it stick out the back some instead of the bottom.
the Dell mini 10: the first computer with a ballsac
Does the Dell Mini 9 or the Dell Mini 10v, 6 cell battery fit the Dell Mini 10? I bought a Dell Mini 10 two weeks ago, before I knew about the new Mini 10 with the 6 cell. OOPS!!!!
