Kindle 2 gets the Colorware treatment, prepares to burn some retinas

We know that the only reason you're holding out on buying a Kindle 2 is your aversion to that sterile plastic shell. Well, you're in luck, aesthete... 'cos the folks at Colorware will happily sell you a model that lives out loud for a song (and $599, baseline). Or you can send in your own e-reader, in which case a cool $199 will get you the paint job you deserve. It will be 2-3 weeks before you get your device back in your hot hands, but when you do you'll be ready to read The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby in pop art style. Hit that read link to get started.

I'm still curious about a REAL WORLD review of the Colorware treatments on devices after a period of heavy use. I haven't been able to find out much by Googling.
I knew someone who had an iphone done by them..it was flawless. It looked like it came direct from apple like that..
@ Ry - How did it look after 6 months or so? Was the paint still mostly scratch/chip-free?
Did up a PS3 Dualshock 3 troler with them last Christmas (in Graphite) and so far so good. And this is one of those items that get handled allot...
PS Oh, E, why do you always cook up the most hideous color schemes at colorware for the article pics?
I got my 4th Gen iPod in Black from them (back when white was the only color in town) The did an amazing job on the paint, it looked great and I was totally happy with it. I kept it in a case, but the glossiness probably would have been a fingerprint magnet, though it was pretty durable. The only downside was that I had to send it to them for repairs and when I got it back they had simply put a new motherboard in it, and it thought it was a 20 GB with a different serial number. I'm fairly certain that their rise in popularity would prevent this from happening now days.
By far the best looking kindle i've ever seen.
Heck i would probably buy one if they looked this good stock.
You're joking, right? That is the ugliest color scheme ever. All I can think of when I see that is "Maybe she's born with it, maybe it's Maybelline"
i didn't see the pink.
But i love the green and orange.
why is there pink -.-"
I would love to get my stuff colored like this just to be different. Makes it that much more special, imo.
$200??
Earl Shives can hook you up for $39.99!!
Or even cheaper with a bit of patience and a couple cans of Krylon for plastic.
They definitely have the market cornered on absolutely-hideous-wouldn't-be-caught-dead-with paint combos.
Not to mention the "OH GOD MY EYES" combos.
Since we are blowing so much cash on the Kindle I have to wonder when the solid gold model is coming out.
lol lame. why would anyone want taht. kindle blows anyways worse than that motorola adventure phone...
I want one painted like a speak and spell
Kill it with fire!
Guacalas!
*sighs* I may have to do that when I get one...if I get one. The point of a Kindle is the point of a book. Once you get "into" a story\book. The tech behind it should be virtually invisible to the reader. It should not distract you from the words. The white of the Kindle, for me, does just that. But the above picture is even worse. Nope give me a black Kindle with deep gray buttons.
Yeah but if you are a happening onthewayup CEO in the airport VIP lounge a large white slab might break your style, you need something darker.
And if you are some artist who wants to impress people with being special and alternative again a white square hampers.
Not that vinyl stickers won't work just as well for the back alone probably, and you'd save $190. that way-
Am I the only one who realizes that this choice of colors is a nod to PADDs from Star Trek?
Please compare: http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/gallery/artoftrek/starfleet-padds.jpg
Now that you mention it, yeah I can see it. It's a bit of a stretch though. Looks terrible on the Kindle either way.
I'm happy with my skin from Decal Girl: Removable, better looking, and about 90% cheaper. My Kindle 2 still has original warranty, too.
Silly Colorware. I want the color on my screen, not my case!
prepare to burn some retinas? as in reflect harsh light to our eyes?
err, isn't that what the original color of the kindle does best?
What is up with the 2 inch border...that's nasty.
Earl Shive used to paint cars really cheap. He painted a friend's way back in the '70's. It looked like heck but it was painted and done cheap! As for the color of the Kindle, it should be illegal to color them until the display itself is capable of color, i.e. more than 16 shades of gray. I'm just sayin'.
When you say 'looked like heck' you do mean 'looked like hell' right? It's a bit confusing this time.
Who declared hell holy and precious anyway? I missed that memo, I mean I heard about 'not taking the name of god in vain' and such, but to respect 'hell' and 'the devil' sounds more like something satanists would do, and yet it's very popular in the US to not say hell for some reason, reasons I still don't get.
Is that a Speak & Spell? Shame...
They should simply make you do a colorblindness test before you can order, to protect onlookers that can see all colors.
I'm not kidding either, you'd be astounded to find out how many adult or as-good-as adult people have colorblindness (the medical physical condition, not a poor taste in colors) and are unaware that they do, since they were born that way they never conceived that they are missing anything with certain kinds of colorblindness.
And the percentage of people with some for of colorblindness is relatively large, some numbers:
Red-green (Overall) Male: 7 to 10% of population
Dichromacy: Male: 2.4% Female: 0.03%
Anomalous Trichromacy: Male 6.3% Female: 0.37%

The left side orange and pink bits are very Zuney.
I feel like Hello Kitty mixed up some of their paints.
