LonMID M100 is a giant smartphone or tiny netbook, you choose
Look, we're not going to try and convince you that you need carry yet another device to maintain your connected lifestyle. And at 6.2 x 3.5 x 1.1-inches, the LonMID M100 is too chunky to join your smartphone in the trouser pocket while being a bit too cramped compared to the netbook or laptop carried in your shoulder bag. Still, we can appreciate the effort required to pack this much technology into such a tiny QWERTY device. On the back of the main 4.8-inch (800 x 480) display, the dual-purpose M100 features a dedicated keypad, SIM, and 2.4-inch display for making jumbo-sized calls when the mood strikes. Otherwise, it'll help you consume, and lightly create content under the direction of a MIDinux OS riding an 800MHz Atom Z500 processor with Poulsbo chipset, 1GB of DDR2 memory, and 4GB SSD with microSD expansion. Bluetooth, USB, and 802.11b/g WiFi? Yup, it's in there. Fortunately, it's only a prototype so you can put off all the hard decision making until later.

finally there bringing brick phones back!!!!
it looks really ugly but it seems fast, good 4 the tech-heads.
make it less fugly, then we can talk.
All it really needs is Windows XP. I still prefer MIU's HDPC.
It's an ARM-device, it can't run Windows XP. All it needs is a production run imo.
@kingu
It has an 800MHz Atom Z500 processor.
You are doing it wrong!
bizzare
Sorry... N97 already stole my heart.
Dammm ..... I told you N97 to stay away from that Vaio P guy.....
Now don't count on me to support that child.
I think netbooks are likely to morph into devices like these (preferably better looking). Android would be great for these, since it would allow netbook/tablet vendors to include electronics for cell phone calls & location-based apps as well as accelerometers, etc.
Other Android bonuses include OTA OS upgrades, a touch-optimized UI, super long battery life, an app market for free/paid apps, etc.
Smartphones seem to be leading the change to what could become a whole new paradigm for personal computing.
If only there's an HTC Universal 2...
I just started using my universal again and it is badass with the new software that is now out for Windows Mobile.
I reaaly want them to make a new and upgraded version though.
@pedro: but I guess the video playback performance is still poorly on the Universal, right?
The performance is not great, core player does well and the universal is still way ahead of a lot of newer devices from HTC..
They need to remake it with a bigger screen (and resolution), gps, better camera and battery. I would pick one up right away.
I actually saw a universal in a shop the other day, was thinking of picking it up for backup/experimentation/for when I'm actually properly away device to go with my Kaiser.
Thoughts?
My very first thought when I saw it was "Universal 2!?"
I'd love to see HTC do an updated Universal. Quadband GSM, 3G variants, 5 row keyboard, dpad by the screen, Android and WinMo variants. (I don't recall if the Universal had microSDHC, or the mini-USB jack, but I'd want those too).
Though, I'd also want:
1) the mini-USB charger/headphone jack to be on the long side, not the short side (most HTC phones I've seen have it on the short side, which makes keyboarding less comfortable when you're charging or have headphones in).
2) Though, really, I'd rather have a 3.5mm headset jack separate from the mini-USB. And, again, on one of the device's long sides.
3) a USB Host/OTG port, for external keyboards. (and, again, on one of the long sides)
4) some form of video out. I'd prefer a micro-DVI-I port.
5) not just a dpad by the screen, but also soft buttons, so you could use it as a light gaming device as well.
6) while the above device is partially bulky due to the 4.3" screen, I definitely DO want a big screen on such a device. 4.1", 800x480 would be fine. But, like the above device, that would probably put it in the 5"x3"x.7" device size. That's how big the Nokia N810 is. The above device is 6"x3.5"x1".
All of that with Android (and a much better battery than the G1's) would make me a happy boy.
Compared to the kaiser, the universal is not really that much harder to carry, I could happily live without a laptop for a few days and just use it. The standard Windows Mobile iant that great, but with a few software additions it is as usable as a netbook for me.
SPB pocket plus for icons on today screen
Resco explorer
Wisbar for decent multitasking
Opera Mobile for browser
SPB Insight for RSS
Core player for multimendia
Its great having the full keyboard for email and instant messaging. It can support SDHC with some hacks from XDA developers and the headphone jack and usb are on the long side at the back. I coud blather on a lot more about it, but all I really need to say is that I am very happy using it again, it was truly ahead of its time.
This is getting out of hand.
And onto your lap.
That's what she said.
Now there are two of them!
This is one Ugly beast of a device... This is dog shit compared to the N97...
Is that pointy thing at the top of the device a stylus or antenna and what OS is it running on???
a MID and a mobile phone , but it's too thick , not "mobile"

iPhone killer.
This is the new iPhone.
FAIL.
MICROSOFTFTW!!!
Maybe you should change the title to something like: "LonMID M100 is too fucking ugly to look at or just plain wrong, you choose"
Seriously, that thing is disgusting :/
O2 XDA Exec anyone?

Is it really gold? Or dodgey white balance?
If they made this 10 years earlier....It would still be ugly but they might have a shot. I think with the upcoming UMPC's there isn't really a need for devices like this. It's too big for a phone and too small to do anything usefull on it.
While the physical design of the device leaves a lot to be desired, I'd still buy one as I think it would be very useful.
well if they got that Atom out of there we might be on to something. X86 doesn't belong in a device like that
If I'm not mistaken, this product was called the MAGIC. It looks like it has a new processor and a few other advancements since the last model.
mini netbook?
That's my side phone...
I've been drooling since I saw this thing last night... but there's a couple of things I'd want to see addressed:
1) I'd just generally prefer to see Mer (open version of Maemo) on it, than Midinux
2) I don't see an external display port ... with the USB port, adding a display port to this would be a great way to use it for docking to a KVM for more extensive use.
3) I'd love to see a little dpad and soft/game buttons on either side of the screen.
4) I wonder what its overall battery life is like... Atom + cell phone battery ... that can't equal very much in the way of long time between charging. Though, I'm currently on a G1, so it can't be much worse than what I've got now.
Otherwise, it looks like it could be promising.
it looks like the worst of two worlds
Is it a phone or not? Reminds me a bit of a Sony Clie that I owned a few years back that was an essentially a convertible PDA tablet with QWERTY. I had a Sony TV tuner thingy that I could program to record shows on $600 memory sticks and watch them on the Clie. It had Bluetooth that paired perfectly with a Sony Ericcson phone.
It was one of the greatest gadgets that I've ever owned. Sadly, the crappy phone died several times, T-Mobile screwed me (I went back to Sprint), Sony discontinued the Clie line and I sold the remaining setup piece by piece on eBay (except the phone carcasses) and recouped a surprising amount of the initial outlay.
