Microsoft Windows 7 on track for the holiday season

Well, we thought this might happen -- especially after the news that Acer's Z5600 all-in-one will be shipping with Windows 7 pre-loaded, come October 23rd of this year. And now it's official: Windows 7 is on track to be released this "holiday season." Now, this announcement may be officially vague, but it is official. Sometimes in this business (as in life) we take what we can get.

That boy painting looks kind of creepy :S
Whats that program that has all those buildings in it called?
windows picture viewer (it's one of the wallpapers I think)
I will say win7 is most impresive. I was able to install win7 on an old g vaio. with a p4 3.0Ghz and just 512 of ram ddr400 and an ati radeon x1600 pro. It actually ran well. Though after moving up to 1GB of ram it was even better. I could not have even hope to get the results I got with vista. I could not even run vista due to the soundmax and intel 915 chipset driver issues. I really did not have much hope for win7 on it but it works ... well great.
I also installed on my amd machine specs: x4 940 3.503 Ghz and 2034ht 226busx15.5multi ,4 GB OCZ Platinum pc2 8000 and anvisiontek ati hd4870 512mb 800/960(I flashed the bios to the asus oc board), all my games run, open gl is fixed and even all the emus run fine. I was suprised how well the ps2 emu did. win7 even works better with my m3a32mvp deluxe wifi mobo. It recognized the wifi card.
arkweld.....have you even ran vista?? While it shaped up to be "alright" it is really crap. It is a resource hog and has to large of a footprint. Win7 is a smaller install, is able to perform well on lower end machines and is just plain snappier than vista. I ran vista from the beta stages till now and I have tried all iterations of 7 and while the earlier builds we a lil buggy vista was worse. not mentioning that as it is now 7 is by far a better choice that vista. Windows 7 is in fact a viable option and it is nice that I dont have any bsod's and other errors like I did with vista at first up until sp 1 was released. So arkweld how about trying the software for longer than a second before you say it is the same as vista for t is not the case. Hell as it stands for me I feel that win 7 is even faster than xp. Vista was just crap and if I was not a gamer I would not have ran it but windows is where the games are at on pc.
W7 tablet functionality is superb. 7Media Center is a good step forward too. All those OMG vista sucks W7 rulz people should realise that W7 would not be possible were it not for vista...Indeed if they went back a few years and released this W7 instead of vista, the compatibility problems people faced with their old kit would still be present for most part. Poor driver support back then was just as the manufacturers fault, which they have seemed a bit more practive on this time around. If anything MS messed up back then, it was probably letting vista out a little to early. Even with a public beta and 2RCs, more time was needed for device manufacturers to get up to speed.

I can confirm this rumor. I'm in LA at Microsoft Tech Ed and it is confirmed that it will be released in the "holiday season". Kwanzaa anybody?
i guess i'll run yet again win7 on my new macbook pro :)
I have been using the windows 7 beta Version and now i am planning to use Win7 RC. I am really impressed with its Fetures!! It is Way better than vista. Vista I did not care for at all.
I am still waiting to releasing date of Windows 7.
And Longhorn was out in 2003. Right? RIGHT?!
Could someone give some info on which ATI Radeon card is working with Win7 without any problem ( dual display ) !!!!
After so many years of using Windows operating systems I finally decided to give a Linux distro a go. Now that I have been using it for a good year or so I can safely say that I will never look back. It really highlights what a load of old rubbish Windows operating systems actually are, just bloat-ware! All they do is keep adding more and more code on top of an already flaky back end and give it a go faster stripe down the side.
My PC spec is not the best and if I put Vista on it then it runs like a dog, however put Ubuntu 9.04 on it and runs quicker than Usain Bolt downhill with a tail wind. I also have the luxury of having the coolest desktop effects that a Windows system could only dream about doing. I don't need to worry about the abundance of security issues that Windows has as Linux security is so much better as it is a proper user based system. I feel in good hands when patches are applied to the system, even if you turn off the machine mid update it will still recover itself! Try that on your Vista machine whilst applying the latest release and see what happens!
There are so many things that should be so much better on Windows, they have the resource to do it but again they just release a fatter OS and fool people with some nice icon's and pretty wallpaper. But I suppose that works for the majority of people!
I can only hope that my company's IT department approves Windows 7 for use on our network as soon as possible so that I can get rid of Windows XP. I switched to the Mac because Windows XP drove me nuts but having used the Beta and now Release Candidate for Windows 7 I can see that it addresses almost all of the things that I hate. I'd have bought a license for Vista but didn't like the betas that I tried and can see that performance would be slow under a Virtual Machine. I shall be doing the Happy Dance (patent pending) when XP is finally uninstalled.
Windows 7 should be a free download for current Vista users and the next version of Office also. Office 2007 costs my company countless hours of lost productivity due to slow performance and frequent crashing apps, especially Outlook and Excel.
I just hope they have a cheap upgrade for recent Vista purchasers. I bought a new copy of Vista Home Premium upgrade in April, and I'll be mad if they expect another large wad of cash for a tiny, incremental change less than a year later.
I mean, damn! They wanted me to use Vista instead of XP, and so I do, and I'm happy. Now they at least owe me a discount on Windows 7 if they want me to stop using Vista already!
@ Templarian Glad you had a great experience with Windows 7! I do agree that there is little reason to go back once one has upgraded.
