They're no
F1, but Acer's rolling out a
whole slew of Windows Mobile- and
Android-powered smartphones this year -- and another gruesome twosome of the bunch is now hitting store shelves around the world. First up we've got the WinMo 6.1-based DX900, which really isn't much of a looker but packs the powerful punch of twin SIMs underneath its homely shell. Most dual-SIM devices top out at EDGE, but the DX900 takes it to the next level with triband HSDPA on top of quadband EDGE; you've also got a 2.8-inch VGA display, WiFi, 3 megapixel AF camera, and GPS, so if you're a two-line kind of individual, look for this one now around Europe and Asia. Next, the X960 ups the ante with HSUPA and 7.2Mbps maximum on the downlink, a revised 3D user interface, and a 3.2 megapixel cam -- it too should be populating Europe and Asia as we speak. Neither unit is going to be blowing minds, granted, but if it's any consolation, we're sure there are a few good hacked 6.5 and Android ROMs waiting for 'em.

The interface is gimmicky yet cool.
The interface looks like Microsoft Bob.
The Thickness is truly great ....(and yes that is what she said)
At least the interface looks like it's dynamic for the dates and mail. Too bad the user can't organize it as if it was his desk or paint the walls or make the backgrounds active or useful like W7.
You can keep that WinMo stuff. I'll stick with Linux, Android or whatever else comes by...
Let me say this once and for all - even if/when Android becomes more popular than iPhone (and I personally hope it does) that DOES NOT MEAN that Linux is going to overtake Windows (or Apple, for that matter) or that it should. There are many uses for Linux but desktop consumer computers doesn't seem to be its strength.
See http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=ubuntu_jaunty_osx&num=1 for an example of the kind of performance issues Linux has to overcome and add to these the problem that the Internet is still a Windows-centric world. online apps, downloads, bank sites, your company's intranet - a lot of these expect you to be on Windows. Still some expect you to be on IE.
So while the handheld may actually be a viable target for a Linux-flavored Android, the actual "Linux" the world equates with a desktop computer is years away from making any real noise.
What the hell are you talking about?
@ vs dude
your choosing one distro of linux also for the average consumer benchmarks doesn't since thet usually just use it to surf the web and email. on top of that it is well known that intel graphic drivers have problems under linux since intel doesn't release the driver info for the graphic cards so this test wasn't fair.
@jay jay: I respectfully disagree. The test seems perfectly fair. One should expect that the if Windows XP - 7, and Mac OS 10.X can perform just fine on the hardware, the average consumer is going to expect that Linux would perform the same as well.
Don't get me wrong, I love Ubuntu and what it is doing, as well as the open source community at large. However, for Linux to be competitive with the rest of the OS community in the consumer desktop market, it must be able to survive under the same expectations.
Coming stateside? Uh...never mind
Anybody buying? Uh...never mind
VGA 2.8 inch screen thats pretty nice. The specs actually aren't that bad the only reason people are giving a bad time is because it has an Acer logo on it. If it had any other name on it I'm sure everybody would be saying it's amazing.
Hey guys, sorry I'm late. Did anyone make a joke about Microsoft Bob yet?
Not yet, surprisingly.
This or E71x from AT&T?
neither is your best option, the E71-2 is a good phone, but att trashed the E71x with bloatware and restrictions, better off with an unlocked E71-2
But, if you feel like waiting, i would go with an android device
What ails these people? Why do they persist in cooking up vile brews of ugly looks and ancient OS and dare to put it on the same shop shelves as the most usable phone on the planet (yeah yeah, low rank me.)
I'm not waking up for anything less than the likes of the HTC Touch HD.
And even then, I yawned and went back to bed.
meh 4:3 screens
Why do companies keep spewing out these shitty Windows Mobile phones with terrible looking shells on top? Do they actually sell? Who buys these things? I can understand with some of the nicer Windows Mobile phones I've seen (some of the HTCs etc), but who would actually go into a store, see this amongst all the other mobile phones there and say "This is the phone for me!"
Geezz..Calm down Shirley Temple.
What the hell is Acer thinking? Did they hire Kevin Federline to design those phones? It looks like they went to HTC and asked them to give them the 2002 design.
HTC? Try E-TEN. ;)
All of these WinMo phones coming out by Acer are based on E-TEN's designs (look up "Glofiish DX900"). After all, Acer purchased E-TEN.
i dont know what is wrong with these phones?
if they have a good CPU, good ram, gps and all the accelerometer and so stuff they will be even better then HTC, especially if they have a headphone jack
lets see the battery life on these things
the last HTC phones sucked cock, i am so glad i got rid of that touch pro. Unless you want to sit all day tweaking your phone over and over and over, its a complete waste of time. If they released the phone in (working) condition, there wouldnt be need to change EVERYTHING
and even after all those roms, and changes and allll the headaches, reinstalls, trial and errors, radios,
IT STILL SUCKS
if this phone just WORKS out of the box, without lag, mass delays, and just utter crap, then it will be alot better then any recent HTC phone.
infact it seems like this phone beats out the touch pro in ever way except ram
better cpu
front camera
back camera
BUTTONS that WORK!
i bet the battery life is better
way better gps
bigger screen
more buttons on the sides
A HEADPHONE JACK!!! (im no longer the dude with a usb adapter trying to play an mp3)
i guess thats bout it, nothing any htc phone can compete with now
What are you talking about? I have a Touch HD its beautiful!
Headphone jack, the gorgeous screen, TF3D looks way better than that, especially on the THD.. It has a 5MP camera and the Garmin GPS software just looks amazing on it.
And all the buttons seemingly work...
I forgot to mention the headphone jack and the front camera...
The word "fugly" comes to mind...
followed by the words "No thanks".
I'll gladly take both of those phones and a cheeseburger today and will pay you Tuesday.
Is Microsoft Bob for Windows Mobile available on all Acer phones or just the X960?
I don't think they're bad-looking phones. Not that I would go anywhere near WinMo though
The DualSIM one has been out for a while.... it was designed by eTen, and Acer bought the company. It was the eTen Glofiish DX900. Acer just rebranded it. A friend of mine just bought the Acer one, and he is not satisfied with it. It crashes twice a day, and you can't have the two SIM lines working together for more than 1 day (if you don't make a lot of calls and you are lucky).
It's not a bad phones, but i could not live with these issues =/
These are WAY better than iPhones! And all Apple users know this. Acer makes WAY more money than Apple Inc and that makes Apple fanboys sad/mad. "He who makes more money is better" That's why Steve Jobs HATES Bill Gates
