eASIC eDV9200 H.264 codec promises HD for all devices
We've already got HD in places that the cast of Step by Step would've sworn was never possible way back when, but eASIC is far from satisfied. To that end, it's introducing a new H.264 codec aimed to bring high-def capabilities to all manners of devices, including (but certainly not limited to) toys, baby monitors, public transportation, wireless video surveillance and wireless webcams. The highly integrated eDV9200 is said to "dramatically lower the cost of entry into the high-definition video market, enabling a new class of low-cost applications to fully leverage the benefits offered by HD technology." Best of all, these guys aren't just blowing smoke, as the chip -- which captures streaming data directly from a CMOS sensor, compresses it, and transfers it to a host system or to a variety of storage devices -- is priced at just $4.99 each in volume. HD oven timers, here we come!

Can't wait for an HD Ti-100 Scientific Calculator...

If they could jam this into the smaller expresscard to bung in my MBP for video encodes I would be chuffed. Sod that giant SpursEngine thing.
English, please! I didn't understand half of that.
Is it really that hard? This chip, into express card, faster video encoding on the go. No need for huge spursengine style device.
mmm mmm mmmmm. I cannot wait to get my hands on an HD PB&J..... Delicious!!!!
What's with the "Step by Step" reference?
Looks fine, but with vague descriptions like "Optimized 32-bit processor", I won't hold my breath. It's pretty easy to make an HD decoder nowadays...the real trick is making it small, with a tiny energy footprint. I don't see anything talking (specifically) about either of those two factors here.
It looks like an Encoder AND a Decoder in a single device. I was told the smallest footprint can be 10x10 and it can certainly powered from a USB port.
Aren't we talking about a chip design here, rather than a codec?
Personally I won't be happy until there are HD displays on the labels of dog food cans.
I'm just waiting for a PCIe TV capture board that does hardware encoding to H.264 on the fly with something like this. About the closest you can come is the $200 Hauppague HD-PVR which is an external device.
Anyone know of anything even remotely close to what I'm looking for? Any announcements of such products?
You can already encode H264 in realtime on software... it's more about what kind of quality compromise you'll make by doing that
I think this will make a big difference to security systems. Just imagine the chip integrated directly into cameras. Security systems will no longer require expensive real time encoding systems - they'll just need to store the already compressed streams.
