Microsoft denies Twitter-sourced Zune rumors
The future of the Zune continues to be awfully cloudy: although the Twitter account @officethemovie was directly linked from Microsoft's Office 2010 promo site earlier today, company spokesperson Brian Seitz just pinged us to say that those Zune rumors posted to the account weren't exactly on the up-and-up:
so we're guessing something more serious is going on -- we've got a feeling whoever was running that account spoke out of turn, especially since Brian himself promised new Zune hardware this year. Regardless, the lesson stands: people on Twitter will lie to you until you are penniless and alone, and then they will kill and eat you.
Update: Yep, the account is a fake -- the person who created it has fessed up to pulling the hoax as a publicity stunt for some rambling iPhone piracy article he wrote, which is an excellent way to be ignored forever.
That account is bunk. Not run by Microsoft so I would not put much stock in what they say. The real Office movie account is http://twitter.com/office2010movie.Of course, that's a denial focused on the source of the rumors, not their content,

oww snap!
Ugh! This is why I cant wait for the Twitter fad to die. It's like someone mixed the worse parts of MySpace, Bebo, Facebook, and narcissism together into one big clusterfrak of fun, and convinced people to think it was a legit way to communicate.
hey idiots...stop trashing twitter for no reason
"although the Twitter account @officethemovie was directly linked from Microsoft's Office 2010 promo site earlier today"
So Josh, all of us that don't get into Twitter are idiots? How nice of you. Sorry not all of us need to tell the world what we're doing every second of the day. "Oh look at me, look at me, please look at me!"
awwww!!! it got me excited for nothing....
no, all of you that didn't RTFA are idiots...everyone that outright blamed twitter as being the reason the source was unreliable, instead of blaming microsoft for linking to an account that wasn't theirs
right now im reading two idiots argue on engadget...
Deez, that wasn't really necessary was it?
Twitter is the stupidest thing on the internet. This is further proof.
- 'Man, Tycho is being a dick'
- 'Going to take a poop'
- 'Okay, poop is coming out'
Twitter is like texting- it's ok once in a while, but only overly excited 16 year old girls do it frequently (did I miss a 'should' in there? ...nope :D).
He should add "...Oh, you should hold off buying Palm though."
That would be fun!
Thats what happens when you use a Twitter post as a source.
Kinda like how the Dublin college student was studying how news media use online sites for information and post a phony quote on Wikipedia for the french composer Maurice Jarr. The news media gobbled that crap right up and posted it as fact without checking the sources.
Rather sinister at the end Engadget... ;P
"Regardless, the lesson stands: people on Twitter will lie to you until you are penniless and alone, and then they will kill and eat you."
That would have been enough, LOL!
I still hope that is released, I have been looking to replace my iPod Touch since it started freezing around week two.
Good deal, I'd say!
Just curious -- Have you wiped and restored?
http://www.apple.com/support/ipodtouch/troubleshooting/ipodtouch/
That happens.. you restore the firmware.. it would work..
Yeah buts its a pain in the ass to do that every month when you have to add back 15,000 songs.
But nothing goes wrong with Apple software?
Get out of here, Apple hater!
Everyone knows Apple's products are perfect.
Can we stop having Twitter rumors from unconfirmed accounts posted to sites such as Engadget? They seem untrue more often than not and, in my eyes, it hurts the credibility of Engadget. Even they admitted it with the last sentence of this article.
You make an excellent point. It's like citing wikipedia in a term paper. Except far, far worse than that.
I was wondering if we could give it a break to the rumor mongering at all. It seems that all there is nowadays is rumor after rumor instead of actual news.
All it takes is some ordinary dude say something to a friend we wishes it could happen to all "news" blogs begin reporting as a very probably fact.
And then you hear bloggers complaining about not been treated as proper journalists. Ever heard of fact checking?
It wasn't unconfirmed, it was linked from the official Office site. Like someone above said, RTFA.
Josh -- I do get where you're coming from, but at the time of this posting, that Twitter account was being linked to FROM a Microsoft-owned Office site, and was also "confirmed" as being a Microsoft account by one of their reps. This is all in the earlier post.
We strive to avoid this kind of stuff, so obviously we want to be as thorough as possible when dealing with rumors. In this case, it seemed reasonable enough to suspect some truth here, as we've seen well trusted Microsoft employees (like Brian Seitz, who we mention above) dropping pretty big hints via Twitter.
Wikipedia is a pretty good source of information now in a study they found that over 98% of information on Wikipedia was correct plus Wikipedia has all of the information from encyclopedia britannica on it.
Joshua T. You wrote an excellent post regarding the use of Twitter as a source: http://joshuatopolsky.tumblr.com/post/106933903/on-tweets-as-sources
There were several confirmed sources in Canada that reviewed the Palm Pre in person: http://www.prethinking.com/home/2009/5/12/palm-pre-final-models-in-depth-impressions-from-canada.html
So yes, most of them may be full of crap but there are creditable sources of news and information on twitter.
The Zune interface has already come to Windows Mobile phones; the functionality will follow, and continue (if not expand) with WM7.
Anyone visiting this site should be able to put these pieces of the puzzle together. Once MS releases the WM6.5 SDK, even more clues should present themself.
I wish this was coming out... soon!
Twitter is so fucking stupid it hurts. It's the journalistic equivalent of a 12 y/o girl whispering about kissing a boy to her friend at recess. Please stop checking/caring about/reporting Twitter-based information.
There is nothing wrong about Twitter itself. The problem is with those that use it for news quotes.
Well Damn....lol
I cried tears of joy this morning after reading the first story on this, now those tears have changed....
Why can't Microsoft just give consumers what they want?! Why?! I just don't understand it...
Maybe because Microsoft can't possibly give people what they want in their current state?
MS reminds me of the old joke: "A camel is a horse designed by a committee. There are too many people in the decision-making process at Microsoft. They need to narrow down the decision-making process.
Though to narrow it down to Steve Ballmer would be like narrowing down Apple's to John Dvorak. (rim shot)
because they have a thing called windows mobile already. even if they were to "give consumers what they want", they'll still brand their new operating system as "windows mobile home". but then since its versioning has been ridiculed by everyone they are not going to do that. so the only solution is to refine their existing windows mobile architecture, but since lots of its technologies are from legacy desktop platform, they have a lot of work to do.
ie, they'd probably be better off designing windows mobile 8.0 FROM SCRATCH
I know, it all sounded too good...
Well if these stories achieve anything, it should show microsoft how excited everyone got so quickly. It was like the introduction of the Pre @ CES again.
There is obviously a big market for this and it would sell a load of handsets
What, and you all thought that Microsoft would be smart enough to actually compete in the next-gen smartphone market? Oh, silly rabbits!
seriously, what's the point of having two mobile platforms? what? acknowledging their windows mobile is crap and are only for money-driven businessmen who only cares about how much his windows mobile can generate???
i think they just need to spend a whole lot of time sort out windows mobile from UNDERLYING ARCHITECTURE and make it at least close to iphone in terms of ease-of-use yet maintaining their advantage in being able to open/edit office documents and its compatibility with windows.
mac markets they can forget about it for the time being, but they needa fight back and grab some of the market share lost to windows users using the iphone.
I dont think they would enter the smartphone game. However, a new version of Windows Mobile might integrate Zune. Thats what I would guess.
There could also be some radical changes coming to Windows Mobile, and we know we get new Zune hardware pretty soon.
MS is smart enough to know it couldnt win in smart phone hardware. Its so established in the software/OS portion that it would bring down both elements and really stand to lose a lot of cash in the whole process.
So @officethemovie is just a random Apple fanboy causing ruccus on the blogs to get a point about iPhone piracy across.. Just lovely..
I, like Engadget, fell for it sadly..
BTW - the real MS twitter account is @office2010themovie
The real twitter account is @office2010themovie..
Bleah.. Sorry. that was suppsoed to be a reply.
Zune has little to do with what Microsoft has in stock for June. The Tegra phone WILL blow away the competition.... especially if those leaked iPhone specs are of any truth.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/mobile_games_demos.html
..what about the battery life? I guess it could be a fat phone like the Blackberry.
No sir. Tegra is a ULP (Ultra low power) high performance chip. This is one of many ground-breaking features of the dime-sized Tegra chip. You can squeeze 10 hours of continuous 720p movie playback on a single charge.
The jackass who made that profile just revealed that he did the whole thing to get attention to push his anger at Apple's lack of efforts to stop piracy. He's now tweeting what he meant to all along, now that he got the attention he wanted. What a jerk.
