Microsoft denies Twitter-sourced Zune rumors

The future of the Zune continues to be awfully cloudy: although the Twitter account @officethemovie was directly linked from Microsoft's Office 2010 promo site earlier today, company spokesperson Brian Seitz just pinged us to say that those Zune rumors posted to the account weren't exactly on the up-and-up:

That account is bunk. Not run by Microsoft so I would not put much stock in what they say. The real Office movie account is http://twitter.com/office2010movie.

Of course, that's a denial focused on the source of the rumors, not their content, so we're guessing something more serious is going on -- we've got a feeling whoever was running that account spoke out of turn, especially since Brian himself promised new Zune hardware this year. Regardless, the lesson stands: people on Twitter will lie to you until you are penniless and alone, and then they will kill and eat you.

Update: Yep, the account is a fake -- the person who created it has fessed up to pulling the hoax as a publicity stunt for some rambling iPhone piracy article he wrote, which is an excellent way to be ignored forever.

I'd appreciate it if the article would admit the fact that people took the twitter account to be legit purely on it's name and that the account is in fact run by some fan boy with the sole intent to deceive and garner attention for his agenda.

I don't think it's fair to just brush this off as Microsoft covering up and it should be made clear that the gun was jumped and the source of this news was a straight up hoax.

For the sake of journalistic integrity.

Oh thats so sad. Clearly there is a need for this "me too" device. If one reviews the previous post about this product, the unbridled excitement from the miniscule numbers of Zune fans is quite palpable. Now that the truth is out, the hilarity of their post will fuel many weeks of laughter, until the real Zune Phone or Zune HD comes to fruition. Just hang on there boys and girls. Despite Ballmers denials, there will be a new Zune, soon.

Twitter is like a breath of fresh air on the Social Media scene. I have been on it for just a few weeks now and I have met several interesting people. It is a platform to network with people you would like to meet in real life.
