WinFast HPVC1100 is world's first external SpursEngine encoder
Toshiba's Cell-based SpursEngine HD video co-processor has made plenty of appearances within monstrous gaming machines, but this marks the very first time where it has stepped out of the laptop chassis and into a portable enclosure. Granted, the language barrier is killing us here, but it seems as if the Leadtek WinFast HPVC1100 wraps a SpursEngine encoder into an on-the-go solution that can be lugged around with a standard laptop in order to churn through video while on set, in the field or on the road. Other specs include 128MB of RAM, a PCI-Express slot and a weight of 1.54 pounds; there's no word just yet on pricing or availability. One more shot is after the break.

How does it connect to anything?
Pic looks like a render.
BradS @ May 12th 2009 9:03AM
Looks like they forgot to put in the screws on the back, too.
BradS @ May 12th 2009 9:07AM
Oh yeah, forgot:
First!, robotic overlords, play Crysis?, carbon nanotubes, IPhone sux, etc.

How does it connect to anything?
PCI-E port
DR House @ May 12th 2009 9:44AM
So cant use it on a laptop?
bdav @ May 12th 2009 9:46AM
I think its meant to be Express Card reading their website - they've got their s*t quite confused over there.
DR House @ May 12th 2009 9:53AM
Oh nice i might get it for my laptop if it was cheap
Blacknimbus @ May 12th 2009 9:25AM
Well, whatever it is, at least it's Silver and Black.
Jagster @ May 12th 2009 12:39PM
I guess you're saying it must suck then?
DR House @ May 12th 2009 9:55AM
Anyone tried editing AVCHD with those cards before? is it really 5 times faster than Core i7? :/
DR House @ May 12th 2009 10:03AM
NVM found my answer... not bad for a "laptop" editing
** One station utilized the SE1000, while the other relied solely on a 3GHz Intel Core 2 Quad CPU to transcode 1080p H.264 video to 480p. According to onlookers, the SpursEngine-based machine completed the task nearly twice as fast as the hamstrung opponent, **

Its Twice as Fast as Quad Core 2 3.000 so it should be still little faster than Core i7 3GHZ (Since as far as i know Core i7 is not double the power of Quad 2 however its still faster than Quad 2 by 30%~ according to reviews)
DR House @ May 12th 2009 10:08AM
Lol it seems i'm talking to myself here ;p
Does this thing work with any software like adobe premium and sony vegas? or the software needs to be optimized for it like Nvidia CUDA?
Cause if it work with anything then i wont need to upgrade my Core 2 Duo laptop and save myself a 1000$ and do all my editing even faster
Hackettman @ May 12th 2009 10:36AM
So Im guessing this is a PC only device?
ZeroK2 @ May 12th 2009 10:39AM
The PCI version was tested by a German site and the results posted over at Doom9 it was found that the quality from the video (much like all GPU video encoders) to be vastly inferior to x264.
The hardware is good but the software is terrible and requires specialized versions of the encoder apps from winfast, if the spursengine ever gets OpenCL support and so does x264 then it may be useful but till then it's a waste of time unless you don't care about quality.
hazard @ May 13th 2009 2:27AM
I was a little disappointed after reading that too. AFAIK the software's still in beta so I'd say the jury's still out on this one yet.
hazard @ May 13th 2009 2:31AM
A link would nice huh ;)

oopps .. that was for the thread below
Aaronage @ May 12th 2009 12:15PM
With OpenCL, CUDA and ATI Stream tech i can't see why you would want another box like this :P
Surely a GTX 285 or ATI 4890 will encode faster than a cell chip and cost a whole chunk less, laptops have their fair share of powerful GPU's too :)
hazard @ May 13th 2009 2:29AM
FYI, CUDA can be used in conjuction with the SpursEngine.

Come on you Spurs!!!
