Apple confirms WWDC keynote time, Phil Schiller leading the way
The anticipation is palpable, sure, but those hoping for a Steve Jobs comeback at this year's WWDC should be prepared for disappointment. Apple just affirmed that this year's Worldwide Developers Conference will indeed kick off on Monday, June 8th, and the keynote address will be given at 10:00AM PT (so 1:00PM here on the right coast, and 7:00AM on the gorgeous isle of Maui). The big news, however, isn't that we'll be there live for every last word ('cause you already knew that, yes?) -- it's that Philip Schiller and company, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will be manning the address, offering devs an "in-depth" look at iPhone OS 3.0 and OS X Snow Leopard. In fact, attendees can expect a "final Developer Preview release" of the forthcoming OS, but you'll have to wait a few weeks yet to get details beyond that.

apple's becoming more and more "open" now instead of hiding everything under the magic sleeve?
giuliop @ May 13th 2009 8:59AM
You mean the magic Steeve.
superfresh @ May 13th 2009 9:03AM
I don't care who runs it, I just need to know if this will cause the Apple store to come down.
iphonerulez @ May 13th 2009 11:44AM
So I guess Steve still isn't able to walk or talk or even get out of bed yet. They could just put him on stage like Prof. Stephen Hawking and have him do the speech using a synthesized electronic voice with an iPhone. That would be pretty impressive. I guess this why Apple shares are plummeting with the news that Steve's no longer able to stand on stage to give a speech about Apple's biggest product of the year.
SV @ May 19th 2009 8:36AM
"there's an app for that".
Musouka @ May 13th 2009 8:48AM
June is going to be very exciting with the over-hyped E3 and now this.
radarskiy @ May 13th 2009 4:04PM
"actually Apple released official news that Steve Jobs is never going to present any new Apple event"
Do you have a cite for that?
radarskiy @ May 13th 2009 4:05PM
Crap, how did the reply go here instead of under Saad?
Saad Rabia @ May 13th 2009 8:49AM
Didn't they already announce months ago that Steve is never going to lead a keynote for Apple again?
Why the disappointment? The guy is sick, old and will die one day, just face it as it is.
matt merritt @ May 13th 2009 9:19AM
I don't recall them saying that... I do recall them saying that he would be back at the end of June. I also recall them saying that neither Steve, nor any one else at Apple, would be making presentations at MacWorld in the future.
Look_Around_You @ May 13th 2009 9:21AM
It's almost macabre how these guys care more about Jobs coming out and giving them a show to make a tingle go up their leg, than whether it's better for him to try to live a comfortable life and try to stay healthy.
Jesus, you will still get the same damn slideshow and hyperbole with this other guy.
Shyam D @ May 13th 2009 12:20PM
Rofl, looks like you figured out how to piss of the iTrolls Saad. Just keep with the Steve is gonna die comments on every post and we'll see how they like it. Make it more dramatic, like he is gonna die from a fluke meteor pummling him in liver something.
Saad Rabia @ May 13th 2009 12:41PM
matt, actually Apple released official news that Steve Jobs is never going to present any new Apple event from months ago until forever. This isn't news.
Guys, I do respect Jobs and I admire his love for what he do, but leave the man alone! He is sick and whoever presents the Apple keynote is not a problem right now, it is what they bring out that is most important. Steve Jobs is getting old, he've been in lots of pressure though his life and he have faced losing his hand in the company he created and losing the chance to lead the market one day.
He is just another normal being who thinks, gave and will leave this earth one day. He is old and sick, he is more likely to die soon than later, not that I wish him any bad, but you guys have to get real with yourselves.
American @ May 13th 2009 1:06PM
at least they could have an ichat session with steve at home during the keynote, so that we can all bow down to the almighty.
Sean @ May 13th 2009 4:50PM
Everyone dies, your point, please? If you could provide some form of citation from Apple Inc. I would be happy to believe you. In any case, I find your statement about Steve Jobs somewhat ironic.
Josh @ May 13th 2009 8:50AM
Why can't June 8th be, like, today?
Bondtastic @ May 13th 2009 9:56AM
Because then I would be behind on the rent.
Phenoum @ May 13th 2009 11:25AM
and i'd be pissed that I didnt have enough money saved up for the newly released Pre...
Samboini @ May 13th 2009 3:26PM
Because I'd miss out on at least 53 faps.
SiLo @ Jun 4th 2009 6:52PM
and I'd be in court.
freediverdude @ May 13th 2009 8:51AM
This is making it sound like the new iPhone hardware won't be introduced at this event. Whatcha wanna bet that later in June we'll have a special event with Steve introducing it as his big comeback.
Look_Around_You @ May 13th 2009 9:23AM
Maybe, just maybe it will look just like the one you have now.
Why would they totally redesign it? Just for kicks?
The 1 gen and the 3G were the same phone, just with a different backside. It's pointless to do a complete makeover just because.
oghowie @ May 13th 2009 1:21PM
Not if a redesign will spur sales. It's just like their yearly refreshes on the iPods.
LAGal @ May 13th 2009 9:00PM
1. you assume there is new hardware and it's a big enough change to warrant a huge announcement. likely not since there's not 4g or such to push all new equipment.
2. not having Steve do the keynote probably has nothing to do with his health being so crappy and simply a further push in the plan to show folks that Apple does not equal Steve Jobs. the Media is finally starting to get the message so putting Steve back on stage all the time would just reverse that move.
3. just cause Phil is leading the keynote doesn't mean that he won't do a "oh and one more thing . . . lets give a warm welcome back to Steve" at the end.
cbw87 @ May 13th 2009 8:55AM
You are a pointless individual.
Michael @ May 13th 2009 9:01AM
@cbw87
I don't see what's so pointless about what he said. Something tells me you're just a troll.
@singj40
I still think OSX is better, but Win7 looks pretty nice. I still haven't used it for longer then about 10 minutes.
Michael @ May 13th 2009 9:02AM
I hope Steve gets better.
cbw87 @ May 13th 2009 9:03AM
@Michael
He made asinine rambling comments about Windows v. OS X, not really the point of the article, and then spammed his website.
Hence my comment.
b @ May 13th 2009 9:07AM
well, let's not compare release candidate product to unreleased product. this is completely based on rumour and changeable design. we don't know what's going to be made into the final release and what unreleased features are if there are any... and of course beta is beta, maybe microsoft's just too desperate to get over the vista fiasco by giving its users "hope" with the hype
meh @ May 13th 2009 9:17AM
This is for the best. Apple has to prove that it is not a one man show.
A fantastic keynote and new product anouncements will send the right message to fans and investors.
Kelmon @ May 13th 2009 10:02AM
I don't mind who does it as long as it isn't Bertrand Serlet and it doesn't turn into another tag-team presentation with endless switching between people. Steve Jobs is a damned good presenter and that's why he used to do the whole thing. Phil isn't bad so I'd be OK with him doing it all. The only issue that I have with Phil is that he can come across as being a bit "goofy" and that's not really the image that Apple wants to send out. It's a fine line between "fun and affable" and "goofy" and sometimes Phil manages to cross that line.
Me4u2 @ May 13th 2009 9:22AM
@Michael Jackson
What's Osx???
sven vollstag @ May 13th 2009 9:22AM

this is one of the most honest comments I've seen in awhile!
gareth @ May 13th 2009 1:14PM
Phil will demo ichat for iphone and he will call steve, EPIC
Aaron @ May 13th 2009 9:28AM
Who?
eriden @ May 13th 2009 9:29AM
"In-Depth look at iPhone OS 3.0" certainly makes it sound as though Apple is planning its usual June announcement and early July release. Some of the rumors were hinting at production of the phone already occurring in prep for a June release. Looks like the June-July cycle for the iPhone will be a yearly event.
Shame, as the Pre is going to get a 1-month drop on the 3rd-gen iPhone, if it doesn't release until July.
Mike @ May 13th 2009 9:40AM
why dont they get John Ives instead of Phil Schiller to present.
Kelmon @ May 13th 2009 10:04AM
Is he any good? I've honestly don't recall having seen him demonstrate something at previous events over the past few years.
Mike @ May 13th 2009 10:17AM
I dont know. But if someone is to succeed after Jobs as the face of Apple, i hope its not Phil, doesnt seem right.
Jeff @ May 13th 2009 11:49AM
Ive was horrible when he went over the unibody design.
digitalrio @ May 13th 2009 9:41AM
Steve won't start the presentation.. but that doesn't mean that he won't end it with a surprise..... boom!!
Jorvay @ May 13th 2009 11:18AM

You guys need to read these releases a little more carefully. The press release does not say, as this post suggests, that Schiller will give an in-depth preview of anything in the keynote. It says that Schiller and his team will lead the keynote. Period. Then it says that WWDC (which is a conference that lasts several days) will offer devs an in-depth preview of iPhone OS 3.0 and Snow Leopard.
JakubFoglar @ May 13th 2009 11:03AM
Great that it's on Monday, that way I can follow live.
Anyway I hope Steve will get healthy soon.
KJ4GR @ May 13th 2009 9:50AM
I guess they will show how great Windows 7 RC1 runs in bootcamp.
Kelmon @ May 13th 2009 9:56AM
I don't care who it is that comes on stage as long as it isn't Bertrand "The Comedy Frenchman" Serlet, with the possible exception of Bill Gates and that's only because he has the on-stage charisma of Anthrax (the disease, not the band). I'd rather have Steve Ballmer on-stage since at least he is more entertaining than Bertrand...
On a side note, I also hate mimes.
roach @ May 13th 2009 10:17AM
Steve won't be there in full, but a talking Steve Head will appear in a jar.
Mike @ May 13th 2009 10:23AM
like a hologram or like futurama?
