Palm Pre "real reviewer" units going out? Not so fast.
There's been a lot of chatter on both blogs and forums as of late stating that those "real reviewer" units Palm was promising to prospective owners -- essentially "everyman critics" -- would be sent out some time this week. In fact, some folks have even been spouting off that they've received their devices (see the magic above, and one of the source photos which has been cropped and blurred after the break). Well here's the deal: those units aren't going out to "real reviewers" before they get into the hands of fake reviewers... namely, the press. In the words of a source at Palm:

We clearly said "we'll provide you with a current-model phone and data-plan service for six months" and Pre only once it is available, we never said they would get early Pre units. So, that's something to consider before you jump the gun on the next Twitpic blast from Joe the Reviewer (though in this particular forum poster's defense, he did recant). Still, the whole tone leading up to the Pre launch is starting to feel a bit chaotic -- we know Palm has to pull the trigger soon, and we've heard lots of totally believable rumors, but it is beginning to feel like anything might happen. The basic question we're turning over in our minds right now is this: does Palm know how to do this right?

Ohhhh plam pre why cant you be GSM
It's just a Palm Pre, what's the fuss?
That top pic is waaaay fake.
If not the pre is ULTRA SMALL, or the dude has MASSIVE HANDS.
look at that thing...
I'm beginning to think the ambiguity coming from Sprint and Palm - including the fact that we have seen no advertising of the phone itself whatsoever - that we aren't going to see this released until later this summer. :(
I just posted this on Engadget Mobile, not realizing this is where the cool kids hang out. ;)
I think it's all coming together and we'll know next week.
Sprint just started a Pre Plus Everything Plan sweepstakes. Interestingly enough the end date for submissions, May 18th, is the day before the rumored May 19th WSJ release announcement.

Of course, the drawing won't be held until the 26th, so could the actual release date (keeping within the Sunday Sprint habit) be the 31st? Either way, it appears imminent. You wouldn't give away a Pre that you couldn't actually hand over at the end of the contest.
I am bummed too. Bad strategy, Palm. You don't do this to your loyalists who went through the trenches with you amidst countless other competetitor phone launches.
At this point, its starting to feel like the girl you loved but she didn't really feel the same way instead chasing after the guys who didn't care about her, and eventually you just had to realize everything and bring yourself back to reality by moving on to one that did care for you even if she wasn't as pretty.
I agree - Palm has played this all wrong.
AT LEAST GIVE THE FUCKING RELEASE DATE!
This device is much more likely to end up like the Storm than the iPhone, IMO.
No one was wowed by the Storm's OS. WebOS has set the tech world on fire.
The Pre is going to be a big deal.
Seeing as we haven't seen the Pre pass FCC testing yet, I would assume it's still has some time yet.
No, it will be released be release in June for certain.
The Pre has already passed FCC testing, Palm just requested that the FCC keep the reports non-public until the launch. Apple did the same thing with the iPhone(s).
they could of at least sent me an e-mail that i wont be getting one.
looks very fake... like if he took the pictures from the yourtube vids at CES...
And on a competition note, Jobs won't be at developer's conference and the new product announcements may be delayed, so Pre is actually looking less murky release-wise than Apple.
"Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) announced that the keynote speech at their annual developers' conference in June will be given by marketing chief Phillip Schiller, not CEO Steve Jobs as many had expected. The Worldwide Developers Conference will be focused around showcasing the new iPhone OS and the new Mac OS, Snow Leopard. Many had also assumed that Jobs would be there to unveil the new line of iPhone products and possibly a tablet computer, but Jobs' absence throws an unexpected twist to the mix. Bloomberg quoted Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster, who asserts that without Jobs, Apple may delay the new product announcements."

I predicted this all along......

I to signed up for this, but without much hope that it would be the Palm Pre. Just goes to show you, READ THE FINE PRINT.

why so much hype over a phone no one cares about?
I spent time applying for it. It was a big waste. They just wanted as#$#kissers. They saw my video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePwZ-NAKNJg and it was honest about Palm.
Palm had a window and missed it....
They are a dying brand, and Sprint isn't doing so hot either.
How are they supposed to compete with the iPhone's refreshed OS and the onslaught of Android phones on the way?
I mean cam'on they ditched their own OS for M$'s Windows Mobile.
And now they delay their "saivior phone" for over a year?
Sheez
Wait a sec, with all the constant talk starting many weeks ago are you saying the damn thing isn't even out yet? What a load of nauseating PR that was then, geez. This makes me as sour about the thing as about the iphone, but then I'm not one to buy cellphones anyway so no loss to palm, I just hope for them real potential customers don't feel like I do, because for me the 'magic' is gone, before it's even out.
"we know Palm has to pull the trigger soon, and we've heard lots of totally believable rumors, but it is beginning to feel like anything might happen. The basic question we're turning over in our minds right now is this: does Palm know how to do this right?"
Well, let's see, shall we? They've got you guys posting three Pre stories a day, including weak sauce like this obviously-fake crap in loving detail.
I'd say that Palm's doing pretty well with the pre-release hype there. ;)
the Palm Pre Sprint branded boxes are darker colored. don't ask how I know but there were roughly 800 phones shipped to key stores to help train the reps.
