Keepin' it real fake, part CCX: "iPozh" DVD player lacks Apple's style, but does the lack of Blu-ray support right
Copying Apple's style and fruit logo (this time it's a pear) is nothing new, but other than the packaging and no Blu-ray support, this Russian-born "iPozh" multi-region DVD player, found at reportedly one of the biggest electronic retail chains in Moscow, seems fit to look as generic and "un-Apple" as aesthetically possible. Still, if you're wandering through a store and you get caught in the vicious stare of that poster, you might fork over the 4,490 rubles (US $139) for fear of the gentleman on the right otherwise emerging from the poster and following you with his gaze for months to come. Look for this to hit outside of Russia sometime in... ah, who are we kidding? Enjoy the pics from afar, and in case you're wondering, that phrase on the blue poster translates to "time for you to play!"

That is definitely a pear.
or an iPear
it looks like the logo on their computers from those disney shows (drake and josh, i think?).
Nope, looks like a sumo sits on his butt facing right.
Prikol'no, no vse eto fignia. Luche svoe shoto pridumat'.
OH MY GOD its a Fcking pear !!!!
Pears are better than apples BTW.
@Quantumphysics
If you like it so much, grow a pear.... lol I had to say that.
foxtrot anyone?
It's actually an iGrusha.
Its all going bananas
That pear computer is so totally stolen from iCarly and not Apple... Any 8 year old girl could have told you that... ;)
And since I know how imperceptive some of you can be, I'll beat you to it. The above statement is a joke. As to why I'm talking about iCarly, well, I don't know. Flame away.
Looks like a pear of testicles.
First!
Ha!
From Russian with Love, hehe. And the phrase more accurately translates to "its time for you to play"
I'm impressed they got the guy from Eraserhead to pose for the box photo.
That is one ugly collection of people to get to advertise your machine.
I'm going to guess those guys are a popular comedy trio or something in russia, otherwise it makes no sense,
Eraserhead is the greatest Davin Lynch film ever. The main character has the weird hair like dude on the box too.
I am familiar with eraserhead, but that's not belushi on the box that's three russian guys.
Also I would not call it his best movie, but that's a matter of taste.
Yeah, I was being pretty glib when I first posted, but now I get it that they are hosts of some Russian Game show.
This is a bit like buying an American Idol branded karaoke player.
I ♥ Engrish
Technically speaking, Engrish refers mostly to slayings of the English language from Asian countries more on the Eastern side of the continent. While much of Russia is in Asia, its Slavic language comes from more the East side (I believe, I may be mistaken). So really it's not Engrish.
Not sure if we have a slang term for it, but I'm sure there are plenty of "In Soviet Russia..." jokes.
@Paul:
way to miss the point, sir!
What a bag of hurt.
It doesn't have blu-ray.
That is FANTASTIC. It is everything a knockoff should be.
It's not a knockoff, it's a special product, made for a relatively successful comedy show with some quite unique contest.
The thing is, that iПож is a quite clever prank on that contest with intended pun, and it contains special mode for karaoke to imitate that mentioned contest.
I don't understand, do a lot of people actually buy these replicas to make them worth producing?
Wouldn't you if they were quality products just branded weird. Half the time it's just the some components in a different shell at half the cost.
I'm against the whole infringing on copyrights to do it though, that's why in the states we just get knock off looking products.
*same
I don't think this is a replica of anything, Apple doesn't make DVD players (afaik). Maybe it's just a decent DVD player with a weird choice of logo.
IN MOTHER RUSSIA, THERE IS APPLE FAKE!
There are fake apples in mother Russia?!! I was wondering why the apples I ate yesterday tasted funny.
Hmmm I wonder what company apple copied their apple logo from.
nobody, they used a legitimate design firm with real designers.
Apple copied from trees.
Jeez not even original... :D
But it is multi region at least
Extremely, extremely slow news day....
Can't wait for Computex'09
"pics from afar", not "pics form afar"
Ha, they actually call it "apozh" on the site. If you reverse it "zhopa" it translates to "ass". Gotta be a joke or something, but it is funny.
you mean 'hzopa' reversed
Mike, “zh” is a single letter in Russian (as it is in many Cyrillic languages). So “apozh” (апож), being reversed, reads as “zhopa” (жопа).
I am a russian speaker, and that phrase makes sense.
There are no Engrish problems with it! The phrase means "Time for you to play."
Pora + Camomy = it's time for you
Igrat = To play
Engadget... way to make fun of a phrase that makes sense in Russian? And then call it Engrish?
We got our translation from two native Russian speakers, and I assure you there was no intention meant in going out of the way to try and find Engrish. That said, translation updated.
Yes and no.
"Time for you to play" would be closer to "Пора тебе играть" in Russian. The "Пора играть самому" thingy sounds like a poor pun attempt, having ambiguous meaning that can be interpreted as "Time to play it yourself" or "Time to play by yourself".
Gyoza Mimi got it exactly right. Not sure why people kept forgetting about the "самому" part, which would translate into something like "by yourself", "yourself", or "on your own". However, I don't think it's an attempt at a pun. In English "Time to play by yourself" might be considered a pun, however in Russian that phrase (or its translation to be accurate) wouldn't have that kind of connotation at all - you'd have to be much more explicit, basically saying "with yourself" to make _that_ implication, and even then it would be reaching a bit.
In any case, if "iPozh" is indeed some sort of a gameshow, then most likely the phrase simply references the fact that now you can play the game yourself, as oppose to watching other people play it on TV.
Hey, follow the link the poster brings some clarity.
The iPozh, or Apozh as the poster says it in Russian, is the game that plays as follows. There are two players. First player records a song (it isn't clear whether you actually have to sing it being completely drunk or it can be any decent song) and then the miracle device plays it backwards for the second player to sing along. The objective for the second player is to sing it as closely as possible as well as recognize what it was at the end.
Apparently, iPozh markets its product not based on price, but differentiation. According to the poster, Apozh is the key feature of the player. And I am sure it is unique, since I have never heard of anyone playing Apozh before. No doubt, the new game will spread like fire, conquering the West.
Other than that, it is the typical Russian product: designed in China, built in China, smuggled from China using petrodollar proceed from selling oil to the West. The poster proudly designed and printed in Russia, using the Canon knock-off printer hiding behind the poster.
Cheers and play Apozh!
Icarly uses a pear for their laptops!
Shit, you beat me to that one.
This is actually just a parody of apple products by a bunch of russian gameshow hosts or something like that. The gameshow or game is called "Apozh" hence the name "iPozh" and the pear is a parody. The dvd player includes a DVD game or something like that so you can play at home, hence the "Time to play for yourself" line. So this is not really a KIRF.
