Palm Pre makes conspicuous appearance at large gathering of cool people
We don't know a lot about driving cars really fast, but we do know one thing: this guy sure does seem excited about the prospect of a touchscreen-driven, QWERTY-equipped slider smartphone with webOS, from struggling handset manufacturer Palm. Apparently at some point during the race somebody from Sprint confirmed that they'll be outing a launch date in the "next couple of days." We like the sound of that.

ahhh i cannot wait!
Apparently, the guy in the picture couldnt wait too.... so he came!
..on the mobile phone!
(he's definitely an engadget reader)
Me neither but unfortunately it's only coming out for sprint, at least for a while. That's one thing that really upsets me: why can't they just release all phones for all carriers? It's not like all the prospective buyers are at a place where they can just switch carriers! Most of them have another year on their plans before they can quit..
But I'm not as excited as the guy farthest to the left in the photo. That dude's a little too excited...
Is ... is he pulling one off?
@zfurie
please explain the joke moar, i still do not get.
The Palm doesnt actually exist
Oh, wow! It's a Pre. The next Palm killer. Yaaaawn.
Sprint is the new Palm Pre killer
@ the two cooments above me,
tool.
if youre not a tool, then ur a troll.
@marc
hahahahaha
I noticed too, he is using his Palm alright!
I'm excited... something new on the market...
Yo dawg, I'm going to announce the date that I'm going to announce the release date, so you can wait while you wait?
The new viral video (which may or may not be made by Palm / Sprint) actually jokes about that:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zIY_6JCmCM
I realize that if it is advertising, which I have a feeling it is, then I'm just doing exactly what they want, but whatever, I've seen worse attempts.
I bet this is Steve Ballmer under that skimask :P
They're going to announce on May 19th, in the WSJ that the Pre will be released June 7.
At least that's what the most current rumors are. The first part I'm not so sure about, though I'd say with 99% certainty that the Pre will be released June 7.
Really? On a Sunday? :-| Fail.
Sprint ALWAYS launches on Sundays.
I hope this doesn't disapoint as much as storm.
Pre is receiving a ton of hype
I can't wait to see if America lusts after it as much as iPhone .
If pre fails ,palms days r numbered. If it kills iPhone v3, I will eBay my 16gb for $100.
It would be really cool if the Pre (or ANY other phone) gives the iPhone a run for its money. I know i'm drooling all over myself waiting to see how the Pre stacks up.
Unfortunately, I doubt that the Pre will have as much of an impact as the iPhone. Apple just has a knack for whipping up fanatic loyalty in their customers; something that I haven't seen from Palm. But we'll see! Some healthy competition can only lead to good things, even for Apple's fan club.
I'll buy your iPhone straight up if you'd like. Anything but this Pre crap.
19th
You're actually 6th if you don't count replies, and even if you did count replies, you still FAIL
The 19th
See the Pre and iPhone comparisons are pretty moot in my opinion.
The iPhone was positioned by Apple from the start as an excellent smart phone, but also a fun/social phone, the media abilities were really emphasised as well as the iTunes integration.
The Pre seems to be positioned more as a business phone, the ads so far have really been more about it's calendaring features etc and there's been almost nothing about it's media capabilities.
I'm sure the Pre will be loved by business people, but I don't see it being a trendy/cool phone in the way the iPhone is.
I feel like they'll market the Pre more for productivity but that won't stop the younger crowd from wanting it. Look at Blackberrys, even tweens have Curves now, it's like the new sidekick. The business barrier has pretty much been broken, people just want cool stuff now.
The reason tweens and teens have the Blackberrys nowadays is these three reasons:
1. They're "cool"
2. Full QWERTY keyboard for texting
3. It's on their carrier...usually Verizon
I just finished my freshman year at college, and I can tell you that this is why teens/tweens buy these phones. If the cool guy at school has one, then they need one. QWERTY should come as no surprise to anyone because teens like to text. However, I feel that kids get the Blackberry because there is no iPhone for Verizon, Sprint, etc.
kids get blackberrys because of Laguna Beach and Gossip Girl. seriously.
I cannot wait for the Pre any longer! Palm, I want to give you my money. What is the problem here. The only thing keeping you and my money apart is YOU. Hurry up.
Yeah Jonathan. It's a pain in the ass that products have to be designed, manufactured, marketed and distributed.
You actually sound like a middle-aged man still trying to feel relevant with that comment.
I'm 19. And the torture/wait game Palm has us playing doesn't need to be justified so continue feeling cool by critiquing people's comments and I'll see you around.
You know the solution to these long waits / 'torture sessions'? Stop reading tech blogs
paul, you could not have phrased that any better. :')
NASCAR fans are a well-known smartphone buyer crowd.
Given it is now popular world wide, I'd think they are, actually. Sprint aren't sponsoring the series for nothing afterall.
NASCAR fan and iPhone owners from Scotland here.
I think this comment is not quite on point. This is one of the largest spectator sports, something like 100 million people watch it. So even if nobody in that 100 million people are in the smartphone market, which I find very hard to believe, they still represent 100 million potential costumers, because lets be real eventually everyone is going to have a smart phone. So you can brand yourself with elitism or you can brand yourself as an inclusive product, I think the latter makes more sense. Also, smart phone loyalty is intense with current smart phone owners, so the real potential for growth in the market will come from people who don't currently have a smart phone.
Keep in mind that Nextel owned the rights to the NASCAR sponsorship before Sprint bought them up. Nextel users != smartphone users.
Speak for yourself.
I'm a big racing fan, and have a fine collection of devices.
for anyone interested, they will advertise the Pre even heavier during the CocaCola 600 on Sunday the 24th (7pm on FOX).
Maybe some space for the Palm logo?
I know an agent who connects advertisers to customers for free.
They don't have a website yet, but their number is 9114583763
I cant wait for the day release day notice so I can wait for the release date.. HA
During the driver introductions, the stage was flanked by two very large PRE's and each one had a massive video screen. I'm surprised Endgadget didn't jump on that too. And 'that guy' is Tony Stewart, former openwheeler and NASCAR champ.
it's clearly a photoshop. i can tell from the size, the pixels and because i've seen quite a few in my time.
You're just jealous because it has a bigger screen than your iphone.
i own (and posted that from) an htc kaiser...
however i suspect you're joking like i was, but my apologies it is kinda hard to tell.
if you are, well played. if not, get your sarcasm detector fixed.
So this Palm Pre will be available at Office Depot?
No, Sprint and Office Depot are both separate sponsors.
Buying a Palm Pre from "Struggling" company like palm is like buying a GMC car. Your taking a risk cause if this palm pre gets average reviews or it just doesnt sell like expected because most people dont have sprint... well your screwed. Sprint is also struggling too .....keep that in mind, read the article for proof. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/28/AR2008022803926.html
I dont understand why people feel the need to talk down about the iphone or any device for that matter. If you dont like it move on and go on to an article that interests you. Your down talking about a device isnt going to change the minds of those who want one. Its a waste of your time and the people who want to have an intelligent discussion.
NIce, you are referring to a article that over a year old.
mike - ok that article is a year old you got me... oh wait check out http://www.bizjournals.com/kansascity/stories/2009/05/11/daily20.html and to the left look at all the recent articles stating spring cuts 8000 jobs and is closing centers across the country!! Oh snap you just got owned Biaatch
