Palm Pre makes conspicuous appearance at large gathering of cool people
We don't know a lot about driving cars really fast, but we do know one thing: this guy sure does seem excited about the prospect of a touchscreen-driven, QWERTY-equipped slider smartphone with webOS, from struggling handset manufacturer Palm. Apparently at some point during the race somebody from Sprint confirmed that they'll be outing a launch date in the "next couple of days." We like the sound of that.

I meant sprint of course..lol
"The company has been cash-flow positive and repaid all its debts that came
due this year."
Yeah, way to prove your point there genius...
You don't feel a bit hypocritical?
First you tell people not to buy a particular phone because you think it's an imminent failure.
Then you talk smack about people who "talk down" other phones.
You don't like yourself much, huh? Can't blame you.
Wait, explain to me how WERE screwed if the phone get's average reviews or just doesn't sell that well.
Honestly, I really don't care what EVERYONE ELSE thinks. I read the specs, and I experience the carrier first-hand, then I form my own judgments.
Those judgments have got me checking Engadget twice a day looking for release details...
It's Tony Stewart. Won his first race as Owner/Driver for Stewart-HAAS Racing. First year as owner. Also happens to be my favorite driver. Way to go SMOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!
And, yes, NASCAR fans like smartphones.
He's the first owner/driver to win in years. Poor Robby Gordon, perhaps he should go back to just being a driver.
Unlike Stewart though, Robby doesn't get top engines from Hendrick ,and share information amongst all the Hendrick race teams. While Stewart has his name listed as owner, he would be struggling without the help of powerful Hendrick motors he leases. Robby likes to do things his own way and is very stubborn, otherwise he could probably have similar equipment.
Yeah because that's a good way for Palm to sell phones, put their revolutionary OS on OTHER phones.
Wow...
Not all NASCAR fans are toothless rednecks. I have used a smartphone of some type for around five years and PDA's for years before that. My house is wired far beyond you average home, my own server with media extenders etc. Just because someone likes NASCAR does not mean they are a hillbilly, try and your narrow minds beyond stereotypes.
You don't understand "stereotypes", they sum up the majority. You do not fall in the majority, good for you, sadly you still like to watch a car go in oval.
saying nascar is just cars going in an oval is like saying baseball is just hitting a ball with a bat or basketball is just throwing a ball in a hoop.
I'm an asian male that looks like a mexican but I sure love my Nascar. Just consider it a 1-UP on your category.
you do realize your name is boomhower right?
btw, i stereotype nascar watchers because i live in alabama, where it isnt a stereotype it is pretty much fact.
Come on...nobodies actually going to buy the Pre...after all, it's still a Palm device. And we all know they have no clue what relevant anymore.
"Palm isn't relevant anymore"-
I remember in the late 90's a small company called "Apple" was toying with an a new computer model and everyone said "Apple? The MAC OS guys!? They aren't relevant anymore!"
I remember when that same company was toying with the idea (alber stolen) of an MP3 play and everyone said, "Apple, they aren't relevant!"
Companies expand and contract become relevant and then obscure...
Here comes Palm again... As long as the Pre gets good reviews it is a sure thing for a once struggling company..... Like Apple before it.
Anyone else exceptionally underwhelmed at this piece of hardware ?
Gum buttons ? No thanks
Dont get me wrong ...the O.S looks sweet and all, but the actual phone is a bit Gick.
And no im not a Fanboi of Apple or Any one of the big guns.
Although I would love an Iphone 3g or the Samsung 1750 running android.
FYI
Im currently using a Nokia 5800 which I love.
Awesome! So this is going to be the day they announce the day of the day they are going to release the Pre!
Is it just me or are there far too many release dates for this device?
GREAT NEWS! I can't wait! This will be my birthday present to myself! My B-day is June 1, the Pre is expected on the 5th from what I've heard. Well now in a couple of days, we'll know! Then I can dump my Samsung M300, upgrade to the data plan, & have my Pre!!!!!! Yeah baby!!!!
I'm a huge NASCAR fan, and avid Engadget reader. I'm sad to say that I didn't notice this last night at the conclusion of the All-Star Race. Aw well, good find nonetheless! By the way, the large gathering of cool people happen to be Tony Stewart's brand new team. He started his own team this year, and it's his first win under the new team.
NASCAR FTW!
I made it to the All-Star race in Charlotte last night, great time and glad to see Tony win.
They had Sprint people walking all over the place handing stuff out and talking about the Pre. They were also handing out Pre stickers for people to wear, and if spotted (by god knows who), they would get a free Pre with some length of service. The sticker said "coming soon" though... so who knows.
Also noticed the two large Pre displays with the screens. Hopefully they're gearing up for that long awaited release.
Is that a giant palm pre boner sticking out from his pant? the guys in the background pointing and staring at it. lol :)
That's Tony Stewart. He won the Nascar Sprint all star race last night. When they were doing driver introductions, there were two huge Palme Pre phone's on the stage that said coming soon. I hate tony! He's a big baby when he gets hit.
I don't care for Mr. Stewart either, but I was glad he won when it started looking like Kyle Busch was going to win... whew.
Us toothless redneck NASCAR fans gotta stick together, you know. Yeah, we all come out of the woodwork when there's 100,000 of us each at Infineon and LVMS, two places where there's a huge concentration of toothless rednecks.
can't wait to get my hands on one. think its the real deal iphone killer. lets see them run more than one app at a time.
Ah yes, the credibility of millionaires, who make their livings by plastering advertisements all over the bodies and cars, are going to convince people the Pre is a great value.
It works for millionare movie stars and media, shoot they could even get a crooked Pres. elected if they tried really hard...Not everyone is so predjudice or elitist to believe all nascar fans are toothless rednecks. Just for the fact you call them rednecks shows your bigoted and narrowminded nature. How does that progressive thing really work??Never understood why they refer to themselves with such an oxymoron???Ohh Propaganda.....got it!!!!
It's a nice looking handset and everything, but I sure hope this thing lives up to it's infernal hype. I wish they'd just get the thing out on the streets, so everyone will just forget about it and let it die a natural death. How many will curse it when it drops it's first call or Palm takes about two months to fix some software bugs?
I'm anxious to find out how many of you are going to be switching to Sprint to get a Pre and curious to see if you keep it for six months until the next wonderphone hits the streets. Forget even the iPhone, this Pre doesn't even seem much more useful than some higher-end keyboard BlackBerry.
i didnt feel like even giggling
Old article, but I feel like I've got to add in... Pre didn't disappoint! 'Tis BAD. ASS.
I'm in love with my phone.
Srsly.
