Iomega's eGo USB hard drives get larger, more colorful

Iomega's eGo line of USB hard drives has seen quite a few iterations over the past few years, but it looks like the company has found room for improvement yet again, with its latest models getting a bump in capacity and a handful of new color options. Now topping out at 500GB, the drives and pack all the same ruggedness and drop-protection as before along with four new color options, although some colors are limited to certain capacities. What's more, Iomega has also announced a new 500GB BlackBelt eGo drive set for release in June, which adds a PowerGrip belt for some extra protection, plus Iomega's Drop Guard Xtreme, which promises to protect the drive from drops up to seven feet. If that''s more than you need though, you can simply pick up the basic eGo drive right now for between $85 and $135.

the only problem here is that they are at the same pricepoint as Seagate and Western Digital, iomega does not make hard drives, and even though in my experience they have used hitachi and samsung drives, they are not known for anything (other than zip, but we don't want to drag that up do we?)
My point is that anyone who knows anything about computer parts isn't going to trust iomega as much as WD or Seagate (or even Maxtor) and if they are the same price there is no competition. However, if iomega undercut WD/Seagate by $15 or $20 then they would probably be able to sway more customers.
I don't see any winning design here either.
color me not impressed
All that and you don't a problem with the name?
I'm sold on that Buffalo one with the built in USB cable. Genius.
In the words of the infamous Derek Coleman, "whoopdee damn do!"
wow, no TB drive?
It's pretty sad when I'm starting to think that 500GB just won't do..
wow closest i have ever been
looks interesting, would love to have this
Iomega still around? The Zip drive could have killed the floppy years before the USB thumb drive did but they over price the disk for them.
hey, author donald melanson, did you write this: "Now topping out at 500GB, the drives and pack all the same ruggedness.." and if so, what it be meanin'? I know you might not have written the headline (to me and, i think, most readers, a drive getting "larger" refers to physical size, not capacity) but you've gotta be the guy responsible for the article itself, no? so let's get you back to the keyboard for a quick edit, what say you?
