Ad impression report proves the Palm Pre is out there, somewhere
With just over a fortnight to go before Sprint starts selling Palm's Pre, it stands to reason that a few of the units have made their way out into the wild. According to Millennial Media, that's absolutely what has happened, with this month marking the first in which it recorded "initial Palm Pre [ad] impressions." In other words, those lucky few Pre owners (or "testers," if you will) are really just goofing off online rather than testing tactility and radiation output. Good to know.

1) Denial - "The palm pre is not better than the iphone. It is just another failed attempt at a clone."
2) Anger - "THIS PHONE SUCKS!! IPHONE RULEZ!!!"
3) Bargaining - "Come on palm, release a GSM version. Pretty Please"
4) Depression - "Ugh. I don't get it. Why are people happy about this :( "
5) Acceptance - (Yet to be seen)
Couldn't have said it better.
Apple is a marketing whore if there ever was one, and their fanboys slurp it up like... well... you know.
This is nothing on the order of what the iPhone launches and rumor mills were like.
@gouken85, the SDK will not be release with native code support. But for this device, you probably will not care about the browser since it renders sites the same or better that Firefox 3.0.10.
And because it is built off web technologies we will probably see its support of all CSS3 specs pretty quickly (which I speculate is better than even the Firefox in development).
I'm an LG fanboy. I am the laughing stock of all.
@Templarian
So you are telling me the pre is not open?
Why?
Apple Fanboys I bet you have more zits than friends. If Apple made a car it would come without a boot, engine and would be peddle powered to save battery life but you would still sing its praises.
You need to look at yourself in the mirror (the one encrusted with your zit juice) and see what a shallow existence you have.
"zit juice"...classic
@Economyst - seriously, do your parents know you're on the interweb? They're gonna be pissed. Any chance you had of getting an iPhone -or- a Pre are going to be dashed to the ground.
Now go make out with your pillow.
The first thing I want on this is some kind of remote desktop and VPN to access my computer. That would be useful in emergency situation for my workplace. not like I'm going to work away from home on it anything.
I think that would be possible. I know open suse actually has a web-based VPN that uses a java applet.
Guys, I've had the chance to spend several hours with an activated Pre and first off, the UI is very smooth and responsive. The whole pinch/spread to zoom in and out is very smooth. The screen response is just like my ipod Touch and this was something I was worried about since my instinct's screen had a lot of play between touchscreen and lcd. Since it is a beta one, there really isn't a lot of support for the app store but the layout looks good. Having this kind of a phone on a faster network is amazing.
A couple things I didn't like about it (keep in mind it is still a beta version): The lower plastic edge of the keyboard lip is very sharp. The slide feels great but you have to place your thumb in the middle of the screen to when sliding to get the best feel. The phone is probably the most attractive to fingerprints than any other phone I've reviewed.
Did the one you played with have the original glossy back cover or did it have the matte touchstone back cover?
its had the org cover. glossy black plastic. I have yet to see the touchstone technology in person. Oh another thing, the whole Palm server account that backs up all you personal stuff OTA is awesome!!!!
Yeah. It looks like the touchstone back cover should be resistant to fingerprints. So I guess it is just the front side that will collect them all.
My brother got hired for a contract job for the technology of a new phone coming out that they couldn't release the data until today. Well it is the Palm Pre! I'm going to go play with it later today!
@Touchthis
How do I find out if I'm a premier customer? I've been with Sprint since 2000 and have 3 lines with them.
I thought apple fanboys are annoying...but the Pre fanboys are harsh, low rank anyone saying anything bad about the Pre taking things a little too personal there folks.
I'm pretty sure that apps for the Pre will start hitting the store not too soon after the Pre is release. All those iphone developers will be porting all their apps over because the Pre does pretty much the iphone does. And the best part is apps that benefits from actual buttons and keyboards that's not possible with the iphone or just useless on the iphone will be unique to the Pre. It's a win win situation. Iphone developers would be nuts not to work on Pre apps.
OK, so how is people not sending in rebates a bad idea for palm? That's what they're hoping for!
I read the article and think that the guy is really pro Apple. Nothing wrong with that and some of his thought may be correct, but come on. The iPhone is not the only phone on the market, though some wish it was, and believe it or not, not everyone wants one.
The Pre will do well. Will it knock it out of the park? No one really knows. I hope so, but if it doesn't no big deal to me. I'm sure I will enjoy my Pre just find.
What the Pre has done is keep Apple and other companies honest. I still maintain that all of Apple's recent activity has been at least a slight reaction to Pre. Would we have iPhone 3.0 this soon if the Pre were not released? I'm sure someone probably can answer that, but I think Apple folk should be grateful to the Pre. Competition is good for all of us.
As for the money, $300 isn't too unreasonable for a brand new phone. How much was the original iPhone? I don't remember. I have been saving my pennies since January.
Anyway, I'm excited. My Moto Q has been trusty, but it is now time to move on!
A "washed up company" with a last ditch effort device? That sounds familiar, http://www.thestreet.com/_yahoo/comment/theturnaroundartist/10002957.html (circa 2001)
Hey Johnny, since you're such a huge fan of Apple, I'm sure you're aware that the man that created all of the products that turned apple around in 2001 (G-series computers, iMac's, iPod's) and arguably saved the company, left Apple to become Palm's Chairman of the Board in 2007, right around when the Pre began development. I think you might also notice that post 2007, after he left, Apple has consistently had more and more defects showing up in their products.
I'm sure I don't need to tell you Apple Zealots any of this though, since I'm sure you already knew it. In case you DON'T know who I'm talking about though, look up Jon Rubinstein, recently named #9 on Fast Company's 100 most creative people in Business list (Steve Jobs didn't make the list).
I remember dropping $400 for an ipod touch 1st gen when it first came out. $200 net sounds a lot better now. FFS!! Mail-in-rebates have been a thing for years. My Sprint reps mail my rebate for me and I get a check later when I have forgotten about it. Yeah it sucks but so does ATT's web speed and plan prices for me.
Another thing, how many iphone users have to keep a car charger in their car? I was with ATT a year ago and had to keep a charger with me all the time with my iphone and I'm considered a medium to heavy user. I had the Pre for the majority of the day and was HEAVILY using it and still had battery life left over and if my battery went bad; I simply go pick up another one and not have to go without a phone for a few days.
I'm not saying the pre is a iphone killer but its better than my current sprint phone (which I considered to be the best sprint had at the time. All the pre has to do is prove to today's market that there are more options outside of iPhone. Its stuff like this that helps stimulate our economy anyways.... competition.
So I will upgrade, btw Premier customers will be able to get them on day one unlike some of the rumors going out there that it will be for new customer only.
HEGEMON
Steve Jobs is a god, shut your dirty hole
sprint employees wont be able to get them when it comes out......meaning only corporate office employees will....not retail
@Sopharus
Ha ha I wonder how much humble pie that chap has devoured over the past 8 years!
Brilliant article that.
I cant beleive it... another useless post about the Pre because someone actually TOOK A PICTURE of this over hyped cell phone.
I cant wait till it gets released and the posts stop.
I admittedly haven't been following the Pre super closely, but has anyone gotten initial impressions of the battery life, OS functionality, etc? It seems strange that Palm has pre-released units to seemingly random people, but not the major gadget blogs. Since they haven't shrouded this product in total secrecy, like Apple, where are the in depth reviews? This thing launches in 2 weeks, but I feel like barely any additional information has come forth since CES.
Chris, this is just mere speculation on my part...but here goes. I think the main reason that Techies and the General press have been denied access to the Pre for full reporting is....Palm has something up their sleeves that will give them some kind of competitive edge beyond what's already been reported.
Think about it...a lot of people have been keeping close tabs on everything they can get as far as info on what it does, what it will be capable of, and what might set it apart from the iPhone as well as other competing (I use the word lightly) products on the market. I think Palm & Sprint want to play this as close to the vest as possible so that no matter what Apple announces next month, they will still have something major to offer to people considering the iPhone or the G1, Blackberry Storm2, Nokia N97...etc.
Mark my words...there will be something extra to this phone besides intuitive multi-tasking, physical Qwerty keyboard, responsive multi-touch screen, multimedia features, Synergy for contacts and data....they're gonna drop something surprising. I can just feel it.
But if i'm wrong, i'll have no problem taking my words back...however, I do feel confident that it'll still be a solid product...and that Sprint's better than AT&T's 3G network and better plan pricing could be enough to tip the scale.
Chocothunder: there's no way there's anything hidden we haven't know about the device itself. Who would want to hide that until release, what would they gain from doing that. If there are any surprises maybe in apps. Maybe they already have a lot of apps ready to go. That would be a welcome surprise. If they announce that the phone will actually have a microSD card....THAT would be....well....I would eat a roach if they do that.
I am not a fanboy or a hater, so maybe I can get an answer to this. Are there any actual Pre reviews out yet? Or will there not be any until launch?
