John Gruber over at
Daring Fireball has a pretty good track record when it comes to Apple rumors -- remember his spot-on predictions for the
unibody MacBook Pro? -- so when he's got a thing or two to say about all the
next-gen iPhone chatter, we listen. While not making any promises, he does say he'd wager quite a bit on a new model coming to WWDC, with about twice the
CPU horsepower (and possibly twice the RAM, too) as the current model. He also adds some credence to all that talk of
video recording, but makes no mention of potential
background apps and plays down any surprise
tablet or
"iPhone mini" cameos. He goes on to add release date would be
sometime in July in 16GB and 32GB varieties. We can't say we're willing to bet against him, but that doesn't mean we'll take his word as gospel. We can safely say, however, that we're anxiously waiting to see what kind of shenanigans
Schiller has in store for next month.
which is why wireless USB took off so quickly!!!

"...he does say he'd wager quite a bit on a new model coming to WWDC, with about twice the CPU horsepower (and possibly twice the RAM, too) as the current model"
Well that should come in really handy for multita....oh wait.
Multitasking is hype. You can switch most apps in about 2 seconds as is, 1 sec with these new specs. And most applications pickup where they left off, so it only enforces App developers to write it right the first time. Use Multithreading appropiately, and the PUSH server messaging system w/out draining battery life and crashing critical applications such as the PHONE.
Steve, you're still not banging that drum are you?
The whole point is that applications run concurrently in the background. That's why I can listen to music, upload through Shozu, run my e-mail and IM and have maps on at the same time. Oh yeah, and my calendar will kick in with any appointments as and when.
And all with no performance hit or loss of stability.
@Mark Anderson Yeeeaahh Right. No performance loss or stability. You can do all that stuff on an iphone, but you know that, your just a huge troll master. What a bunch of bullshit. I support those fucking winmo phones you speak of and they are SHIT, everyone of our employees that use them know thoroughly the reset process for when it locks up.
@Dillinger
Good for you. I'm talking about Symbian phones though which work pretty well (S60v3 and S60v5 that is).
But hey, keep being a dickwad. No need to change the habit of a lifetime.
Wow! This is true innovation from Apple! Wow!..... sigh.....
I'm sure the Japanese/Korean/Chinese will laugh at this like they have already been doing so at the current iPhone specs. Thing's a joke (both current release, and rumored specs of upcoming one) when compared to what's already over there (and has been for years) from other companies.
OH MY GOD! It is like the phone from FUTURE!!!!
APPLE, my nokia in 2003 had video recording..
Better give up or keep following NOKIA light years behind!
Engadget the minute you stop APPLE NEWS! I will visit the page at least 20 times a day!
I am sick of seeing 6 year ago's technology as some invention!
I guess your Nokia from 2003 also did everything else the iPhone does? I didn't know Nokia invented the App Store, either. And to think it must have been lightyears ago? Why didn't anybody notice back then? I MUST be missing something...
Yeah. Outside the US, when people find out the iPhone can't video record out of the box, they're like "NAAH, GET OUT OF HERE....wait... really? You're serious? It can't record videos????"
Same conversation happens when they are told the iPhone can't send images, files via Bluetooth.
I remember when I friend of mine imported his iPhone from the US in 2007. After taking a photo of the group, showing off how you pan and zoom with your fingers, I told him "Nice, here my Bluetooth is on, SEND IT TO ME" .... he was like "it can't...." The look on the girls' faces was priceless.
Then I suggested he video record us.
@TareX,
So true. I know many of my friends (live in Aus) will not get an iphone cause it does not send files via bluetooth and cant do video recording.
Not bagging out the iphone or anything, but since apple didn't provide australia with an iphone straight out; but gave us the ipod touch, everyone know has the touch... Whats the point of upgrading to an ipod touch that can recieve calls and take lower quality photos?
Better yet, when they did give us the iphone it was charged so much higher then the US version! :(:(:(.
Hopefully, in their 2nd attempt at a phone for Aus it will be good :)
@TeraX: What happened when your phone crashed?
Yeah Tarex, you really zinged him. I suppose you'll never admit that you really wanted him to bluetooth it over because receiving an e-mail with the photo attached probably wasn't gonna work too well on your phone, right? Because that's how people do it on the iPhone, we e-mail the stuff. Be honest: No one transfers over bluetooth. I agree that bluetooth transferring would be a cool option because you may not always have the internet available, but bluetooth isn't really very fast and it hasn't been a problem for me to just e-mail someone the photos I take.
I don't really relish that smugness you claim you felt, but I understand: That's the way I feel when I see people trying to browse the web on a blackberry or that old RAZR that people keep claiming could do all of this stuff before the iPhone.
@str1f3
Uh, didn't you read? It wasn't an iPhone.
@ ill trooper.
Go ahead, email a photo too someone that is next to you. Enjoy your bills.
@copeys "Enjoy your bills" WTF does that mean. Do you have to pay per mail on your fucking piece of fucking stupid shit nokia? When you were being a dumb ass smug douche bag to your friend did he punch you in the face and take your fucking phone and smash it into the back of your dumb ass head, cause with the smugness that you are showing just on these forums, that is exactly what i would have done if i was him. The i would have smashed your shitty phone into the street, since you seem like the kind of person who is a total dick ALL THE TIME.
I, my phone and my country are all better than you, so stfu with your POS nokia bullshit.
See how it is when someone is totally fucking unreasonable and stupid?
Have a nice day :)
@dillinger
It wasnt me with the nokia story, it was someone else.
I was just commenting on how someone didnt like bluetoothing a photo to someone next to them, but emailed it instead. To me, that is pointless and a waste of money. That is where the comment "enjoy your bills" comes in.
Also, your comment, GOLDEN. Yes it is insulting me, but god, LOLS. Seriously, you made me laugh, the amount of insults thrown in there... funny!
Anyway, you have a nice day as well :)
Ah symbian not android. See I'm behind on that news and its still years ahead of the iphone.
You people who bitch about the iPhone make me ashamed to be a nerd. Every post about iPhones results in you little bitches crawling out from under your rock and laying down the same friggin' complaints. The several million people who bought the iPhone and the several million more who will don't give a rats ass about your opinion of the hardware. Give it a rest for christs sake. If your personal tastes don't lead you to purchase the iPhone, don't buy one. The reasons you bought your phone may or may not matter to anyone else. Obviously, people who bought the iPhone got what they wanted. Your complaints say much more about your anal, controlling personalities than they do about the gear. Please STFU.
This. When i got my iphone first gen there wasn’t even apps for it, but i was happier than i had been with any other smart phone ever. We know there are 50 billions buggy ass winmo apps spread all over the Internet, we don't give a flying fuck.
Phew. Lots of h8rs out there.
I did not buy an iPhone because the Android rumors were swirling. Then I tried them both out.
I will definitely be in line for the next iPhone refresh, because even though it may be overpriced and underspec'd, the OS and interface is unmatched. Don't feel bad, it took me awhile to realize that it is all about the user experience.
Honestly the whole argument of "My (insert some cheap ass phone here) from three years ago can send MMS" is getting a little monotonous. Okay, we get it. Your Razr can record video. HOLY SHIT! So the iPhone can't record video until now. Big deal. I've honestly heard the argument so many times, I don't even bother to read comments all that much anymore. Quit acting like kindergarteners and go play with your Nokia, LG, Samsung, whatever kind of phone you have because, DON'T WORRY, we all know it sure as hell isn't an iPhone.
*YAWN.*
iPhone? Boring.....NEXT.
Palm Pre? Ok. I'm ready.
Yep, boring enough for you to click on the story, read it, sign in, and write about it. Are you sure the story is boring or just you?
Have fun syncing your pre to your desktop. Oh wait, if your not a facebook tween or have an exchange server, your fucked.
I work at AT&T and this week we were told that our new iphone was going to be an edge device with a new form factor. we were told to sell the 3g as the leading model. The entire company is focusing on customer service and we are going to use the iphone launch as a way to reach a new demographic. I was a little let down. but the iphone "slim" is totally a reality!
I don't believe you.
MAYBE they will release 2 phones, and one of them will be the one you describe. A $99 iPhone "slim" with no required data plan would sell like hotcakes, and would pretty much put Moto and LG out of business altogether.
The "other" iPhone (that you're convinced won't be making its debut) is certain to have these rumored specs, at this point.
On another note, I love how the anti-Apple fanbois' argument has evolved over the last 2 years. Before it was, "The iPhone can't do any of the things my 3 year old Nokia did". Now they're forced to admit, "Big deal, it can do ____. My 3 year old Nokia could do that."
I'll agree that the issue of multi-tasking is, rightfully so, a bone of contention. You all act like every other phone out there (even the 3 year old Nokias) can keep playing a YouTube video while you respond to an IM you got on AIM, or play a tiny scaled-down video from your library in the corner while you compose an email. Riiiiight.... These few scenarios like the ones I just described are really the few multi-tasking issues that Apple's Push system won't be able to accomplish. We'll see how good the Pre does it - I don't think we can expect amazing performance from them (or any of the other manufacturers) in these types of multi-tasking scenarios. But please, continute to hate on.
Of course they will seeing as how I bought one 13 days ago.
However, I bought one anyway knowing that this was coming out. I have it all worked out in my nerdy, gadget-lusting brain. See my wife is eligible for upgrade in Feb. By then the demand for iPhone3 will have subsided to the point where we can just walk in and buy one, and then we will trade. So far, she is okay with this. I love my wife.
Here's what I heard Engadget:
1. 4gb model for Walmart @ $99
2. 8gb, 16gb, and 32gb @ $199, $299, and $399
3. Video recording, all other specs are speculation at best
4. Release date is 6/23 or 6/24, I forget but I'm sure it was 6/23.
Any rumor on availability for Verizon?
I used both generations of iPhones. I couldn't take ATT anymore so I paid ETF and switched to Verizon with Omnia.
Now I miss touch screen that I can actually use my thumb to do everything (instead of finger nail)
You screwed up...and wasted money
People seriously need to stop HATING on the iPhone and iPhone owners. A phone is a preference, whether you like my phone or not does not concern me in any way. If I like it, then what the hell does it matter what anyone else says? The way Apple has marketed their product is what has made it so successful, I think instead of always being bandwaggoners and going against what the majority likes, you should look at the facts. Mobile phones are not about cameras! Are you kidding me? Those 8MP camera phones take pictures that look like CRAP. If you want to take good pictures, may I suggest a Cannon or Sony DIGITAL CAMERA, and not a puny little cell phone camera. I own a Winmo phone, an iPhone, and I had a G1 for a short while; out of all of them, my iPhone is still my favorite. Want to know why? Because it has the best internet browser I have ever used on any phone, the music player is unmatched, the interface is still the best, and it makes calls and texts which is what a cell phone is made for. Yes I do agree that it is funny and a little stupid that Apple lists things such as "Copy and Paste" or "MMS Messaging" as main features on their upcoming OS, but what is your complaining going to do people? Just move on, why must you put down everything that is good and everything that others like. If you don't like it, great, move on to your Nokia or Samsung QUIETLY....because WE DO NOT CARE!
thank you.
