Waterproof 5D Mark II housing allows for 1080p under the sea
People are already using Canon's groundbreaking 5D Mark II to shoot feature films, but we never thought we'd see the next Jaws captured with a DSLR. 'Course, whether or not Mr. Spielberg will actually choose to use one remains to be seen, but at least the option's there now. Famed underwater imaging company Sea&Sea has just outed its newest waterproof casing, promising to keep the 1080p-capable DSLR safe for up to 60 meters under the surface. The only issue? It'll set you back almost as much as the camera body, or ¥283,500 ($2,998). Good thing you've got a Hollywood-sized budget, yeah?

"EOS 5D Mark II can be used almost in the water features."

60 meters is quite deep therefore very expensive. Also its quite a looker!
Shame the 5Dm2 lack 24p.
Ho, and its in Yen... it will be less expensive in USA im sure. Everyting new is expensive for 6 months here in Japan. I mean more expensive than the rest of the world.
Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor
Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you looking for
Under the sea
Under the sea~
The most wonderful thing
Under the sea
Is I wont be able
to hear ye
That is what I is looking for.
Can't they make a really cheap 5 meter housing? That's all most people will need.
The cheapest ones cost as much as the camera itself.
The waterproof cameras by Olympus and others don't have comparable quality.
A really cheap housing for your really expensive camera? Go buy a Ziploc bag and hope for the best.
"But.. but.. The housing is only plastic, its so cheap to make!"
Forgot to mention my model, it's a Canon Powershot A570IS (a P&S), not really cheap, not really expensive either.
It is cheap to make, isn't it? :p
I got my Canon PowerShot A710 IS waterproof housing for about £90 ($140), although I believe the RRP is more like £150 ($235). It is waterproof down to 40 meters and is a rather lovely well engineered thing. I think you can get them for most powershot models.
SLR housings are expensive because they are difficult to make, they don't sell that many of them and they are aimed at pro users.
I wanted to laugh, but the thought of putting my new Mark II in a ziploc bag and taking it underwater triggered an OCD episode for which I was almost hospitalized. Thanks a whole lot, Josh.
Very pricey option for an already pricey camera.

This Ikelite housing has been out for some time, and its over $1,000 cheaper. Its also rated for 60m.
We actually just got back from the Galapagos Islands where we shot all of our underwater stuff with the 5D and Ikelite's housing. We were shooting documentary and this combo worked flawlessly. We shoot with a RED One Digital Cinema package and although the 5D has it's limitations, what it does, it does well. Some of the footage looks as good or better than the stuff with the RED.
I'm jealous!
I'm still trying to figure out what to film with my 5D2.

Unfortunately, underwater housings are expensive, even the one for my outdated Nikon D70 costs more then 3 times the price of the value of the D70 now, while camera prices come down over time, the cost of the housings don't appear to follow. This makes me sad as I am a scuba diver. On the bright side, I have discovered that some of those disposable elcheapo underwater cameras that work to 30m actually take better pictures then one of the digital cameras we rented for the same dive..
HI DEF underwater PRON?
The housing are expensive because the market is tiny for these things. And the price is just for the body, the ports and zoom/focus gear are additional, not to mention lighting and strobes. You could easily spend $8k on just the housing, ports and strobes in addition to the camera.
For that much money, it needs to go deeper than 60m/200ft and at minimum it should be 100m/330ft.
