PureDepth ramps up production of "Multi-Layer" 3D displays

PureDepth has been talking up its "Multi-Layer" 3D display technology for quite some time now, but it looks like the displays should finally be rolling out en masse, with the company announcing that volume production of its new 12.1-inch displays was slated to begin this week, which follows those first few 20.1-inch displays that wound up in slot machines. For those not up to speed, the displays themselves make use of two LCD screens placed a few inches a part, which lets them display three dimensional images without the need for special glasses and, according to the company, without the headaches often associated with 3D setups. It also looks PureDepth is getting increasingly confident in the technology and its future, and it's now even gone so far as to establish a Japanese arm of the company that it hopes will help it garner a bigger foothold in the country.

Now that is just SEXY... ?

you need to have your senses re-evaluated
/end sarcasm?
You need to notice the dots. ...
Wow, last time a saw one made like this was at Siggraph 2004.
Apparently they used most of their cash on the design team because these things are beautiful!
boxay!
You said the magic words.....

I just went to their website. Not much on how it works:

It looks to me they are using visual cues that give the brain hints about depth, much like painters and sketchers have known for centuries, e.g., a more distant object could be out of focus, or darker, add in a screen that is actually an inch further away, and you can get some nice effects.
You'll have 3d alright, but just two depths; near and far, but combined with "artisan illusions" it could look pretty good. Still, this isn't "true" 3d. Unless they can provide each eyeball a different angular view of the same subject (stereoscopic information), this isn't really the 3D I was hoping for.
There is another experimental LCD whose surface is like a washboard. So that the left and right eye see the left slanted surface and the right slanted surface respectively. And since you can draw a different image on each slant, you can get stereo information. The problem is, all eyes aren't spaced out equally, and you have to be at the proper viewing distance.
There's also dome shaped monitors that give true 3d displays, but they aren't very compact.
It would be nice to have an LCD monitor that can mimic holographic material.
What could be within technological reach today, would be LCD goggles, where each screen is shaped like a dome, and encompasses not only your eyes frontal field of vision, but the periphery as well. This may be your best bet in experiencing "true" 3d.
Ah the future...
You know, I had this idea when I was a kid, back in the days of the original Game Boy. I was like, why don't they just put several screens layered with the top ones being clear to display a 3D image? I didn't know jack back then, but it was a cool ass idea.
Because unless the multiple screens give different information to each eyeball, it's not "fully" 3d. You'll get as many depths as there are screens. So if you have 3 screens, you'll have close, middle, and far, and that's all.
Still, that might be good enough games and applications...
And now you're the guy?
Reminds me of the famous "fake 3D" trick employed by video games of the 8 and 16-bit era where the background is merely another layer passing by less quickly than the foreground layer. I bet those would play excellently on these screens, if someone would write the software to support it.
Parallax.
Is that a VGA cord I see? Talk about high-tech!
HDMI..err.. DisplayPort ftw
These are rubbish
Nice minimalist design: it's a black box! Minimum design personal costs =PP
Typo: it's personnel I meant to write.
Ugly and not 3D.
Unless things are popping out of the screen, I'd rather invest in an 120Hz LCD monitor and 3D vision.
that's what i'm talkin' 'bout, son......
tomo
The horror! It's almost a third of the size of the displays we all used 10 years ago! To have to descend to such depths! Our desks would cry out in pain!
back in my day we had these things call arcades " Aladdin's Castle " being one of them. and they had this game called " Time Traveler " which was a 3D holographic video game (sorta). i remind you this game came out in 1991 ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=losa6IVhoSo )
Is that a fu*kin' VGA cable?!
Whats wrong with VGA ? I have never seen any real noticable difference between VGA and DVI.
Well... the major difference is Analog (VGA) vs. Digital (DVI). Obviously, digital signal is of a higher quality than analog. But, in most cases on most consumer monitors, you won't spot any huge difference.
I was just surprised that such a "high-end" 3d display inputs analog signal, which is strange...
Looks like some 12 year old kid made it in his dads garage or made for an arcade game console!
At least it has true 3D design....
This reminds me of sticking a fresnel lens in front of a CRT, to give games a sense of depth... It's supposed to work really well.
I never did get around to trying it, though...
This is not true 3D..yes, it gives a perception of depth, but images don't transition between the planes of sight, and cannot be extended beyond the initial field of view.
Circular polarized dual projection technology delivered at 1080P is what you need to see if you want a true 3D experience. We manufacture these systems and they put all the competition to shame.
