Video: RB2000 featured in new, improved Robo Catcher
Ah, a childhood favorite revisited. Years back, our hearts were taken by the one and only Robo Catcher, and now it seems the famed toy snatching game has seen a revamping that features JR Robotics' RB2000 as the main grabber. The entire unit has also been freshened up in the design department, and the addition of a joystick control system brings it up to speed with all of its "just a claw game" rivals. Hop on past the break for a look at what you're missing out on here in the states.

Awesome I've always loved these party games.

So let's see - programmed into the controller underneath is a count of how many times it falls flat after grabbing something, thus releasing that something, before it awards you the prize, right?

I can't count how many times I've placed claws perfectly over an object, and smiled as the claws came down perfectly to scoop the item up. Yet somehow, as soon as the claws try to lift upwards, the claws just don't seem to have 'strength' to keep a tight grip on the item (as if a teddy bear weights 15lbs) and you're left with air and fifty cents empty.
I'll believe it when I see it. These games are scams, the claws are just mechanically limited to picking up anything heavier than air.

Indeed, many are actually programmed to have an initially high grip strength when they pick something up and then after a set period of time they loosen the grip thus dropping the object a second or two after starting to move towards the prize chute. FRUSTRATING!

Quick! This is what you must do...immediately!
Go to the nearest pub...purchase a proper pint of Budvar. Drink that...then order another...and don't dally!
If you're still thinking of robots and children's games, switch to absinthe.

I loved how he picked up the toy,
to show to all with such glory,
only to fall over when trying to carry it out :D

I call these types of machines "gullibility testers"

That robot looks constipated. Poor little guy.

I'm impressed, instead of an impersonal "claw" that you view as a machine which is inherently broken when it can't grab the item you want properly, and thus induces endless levels of vehemence when it fails, we now have this adorable little robot under our control.
Every time it failed was so charming that it brought just as much of a smile to my face as I would get from actually successfully getting the prize that I specifically wanted.
Beanie @ May 22nd 2009 2:19PM
Just remember.. Because of this.. we are all doomed when the robotic uprising happens. It'll become a nice game of HumanCatcher.
eric @ May 22nd 2009 3:22PM
I hope the game doesn't cause you to breathe as heavily as the fellow with his nostrils right on the cameras microphone, like in this video.
