We know that
Sprint,
Verizon, and
T-Mobile are all getting versions of the
Touch Pro2, but what about little ol' AT&T? Turns out that device is codenamed "Fortress," and it'll accompany a
Touch Diamond2 version known as "Warhawk" to market this summer. The Fortress is actually listed as targeted for May 25, which seems a bit unrealistic -- but we think the document we're looking at is a little stale, so we're sure the inevitable delay has crept into the schedule by now. It's expected to launch with WinMo 6.1 AKU6 (presumably upgradeable to 6.5 down the road) with full HSPA on three bands, AGPS, a 3.2 megapixel AF cam, 3.6-inch WVGA display, and Video Share support. Curiously, the bottom of the slide mentions that a "WM 7.X refresh" is in the works with a September 2009 launch date, which underscores the fact that this slide is likely a little old -- there's no way anything running Windows Mobile 7 is hitting this year if 6.5 will just be coming to market in volume toward the holiday season.
Meanwhile, the Warhawk -- AT&T's Touch Diamond2 -- gets a 3.2-inch WVGA display, dual-band HSDPA, AGPS, and Video Share, but unlike the Fortress, it's scheduled to launch with Windows Mobile 6.5 installed out of the gate. It's targeted for August 24, so we'll see how closely they can stick to that.
Ten cell phone posts in a row now.
Who opened the flood gates?
Yea really and it's mostly (or all, I can't remember) AT&T, which is good for me since that's who I have :D
I know I went and counted the number too. Was their like some meeting that all the cell phone company's went to that said they all had to release news today.
11 now at the time i read this, let's make it the Mobile Engadget day
Ok so maybe more like half AT&T, but still
I thought Engadget Mobile was for this reason..Engadget is seriously overloading us with crap cellphone news, screens are nice - but do we really need to see a verizon branded TP2 in a picture that tells us almost nothing about it, just make a brand new post just saying: New phones revealed/shown off today - too many posts for a Sunday
Yeah! How dare they post news! An so much! And on a Sunday!
The nerve of them.
Yeah I totally agree... there need to be more wireless mouse / Wii game adds
well its definitely better than some lame article about games and wii and some upcoming psp...this is engadget not joystiq
holy crap those phones are gorgeous!!!!! i hope that edition of the touch pro 2 comes to tmobile.
I believe the first "in the wild" shots of the TP2 was with T-Mobile.
I think it's EU version of T-Mobile,
And speaking of 6.5
WHERE THE HELL IS THE WINDOWS FLAG BUTTON?
and with Android, pretty please =P
How come the keyboard isn't offset like the Touch Pro2?
Answered my own question... it has a numeric keypad. That's new!
Seems like a huge waste of space. I'd much rather have larger QWERTY keys across the entire keyboard and either a single row dedicated to numbers/special characters or numbers as secondary keys (i.e. though Fn).
AT&T loves to screw with the keyboard.
I'm getting a TP2, but with this the way the ATT version is, I may be getting one unlocked.
and all it's *5* rows....according to the slides.
personally, I don't get the numeric keypad... I like the look of the regular keyboard better, oh and I hate how it's backwards of a regular keyboard keypad.
this new keyboard design seems interesting. i hate the keyboard on the fuze, seems like way too many rows on such a narrow board to me. typing on it isnt as great as the tilt.
Seems like all carriers differ with the keyboard. Sprint and Verizon and now AT&T all have different keyboard setups than the international GSM version direct from HTC. I think I like this AT&T version best, even though I could really pass on the red.
Holy crap! Numberpad!
Phone pad... the numbers are like that on a phone not a keyboard.... You think at some point we could standardize that.... Oh well.
It's a pad with numbers on it. I don't see your point.
@Diesel
Different purpose, different design... the PC numpad is like that because 0 and decimal point are very common inputs followed by 1,2,3 that is why they are closer to the user.
No doubt, I would like to see the number keys arranged like that on a keyboard. I have not used a "traditional" phone number pad in quite some time.... personal opinion.
Do Not Want.
I like this new pad. I hated dialing numbers when all of the number keys are spread out.
Since they have front facing cameras does this mean AT&T will be launching video calling?
Those are most likely light sensors.
Nope, cameras.
And just because they have them, doesn't mean that they're going to be used.
The phones pictures aren't AT&T branded yet, so these are probably HTC stock photos that haven't shown the AT&T mandated crippling.
It's probally for At&t video share.
WARHAWK and FORTRESS!
I love HTC poduct names.
Seriously gorgeous looking phones.
And yeah. Num Pad! Excellent.
Coming soon the HTC BUNKER .. just for your icon :)
Damn smokin!
nicezzzzzzz
Nice, it has a kezboard.
Too bad both doesn't have OSX, the world's best mobile operating system.
Get those comments in now, you can only say that until June 6th.
agreed, in june apple will finally catch up and release their 3rd update, something that was supposed be out 2 years ago and still no background tasks.
your mom is the best mobile operating system.
(thats right. i went there. i went there with BELLS on)
You mean you went there with AT&T on?
I thought Bell Wireless was a really BAD mobile provider? /really bad pun.
Why on earth did they make the keyboard red?
I'm liking the at&t Diamond2, though.
holyyy shitttttttt im get the Fortress but i think they should have called it the blackhawk
Warhawk is sexy.
So...is that image a fake or did they really go with a QWERTZ keyboard format, rather than our standard QWERTY.
Something isn't right...
woha, good eye...maybe someone should inform HTC and AT&T before the lulz.
German layout. These definitely aren't necessarily the final case designs for the devices - just rough guides.
I just shat bricks..
Hmmm...the Fortress just might get me out of my HTC Hermes....
RED keyboard? No! Please change it before release! Black PLEASE! I'm still getting it anyway. I hope it tilts like all the other TP2s. I have to say though, the AT&T Diamond 2 DEFINITELY looks better than the normal HTC Diamond 2.
The specs say 5-row keyboard but the picture shows a 4-row... Any way it has about the same amount of keys as the normal TP even if it is 4-row. 4x13=52, 5x10=50. It would be awesome if it was a 5x13 for 65 buttons!
Sheeeet...I just purchased a European Diamond2 for the States cuz I didn't think it would come out until August-September....oh well, I'm still cool with it....
It probably won't come out until then.
I'm waiting for the N97. I'm completely over WinMo. I really liked it at first until I realized that it's a pain to even sync to WINDOWS, coupled with the fact that I use Ubuntu exclusively, it's a lose-lose. So I'm all about the Nokias now, and the N97 blows both of these phones out of the water.
4 row keyboard!! What happened?? That's cramped looking and doesn't have the apparent "tactileness" that the t-mo version will have.
That is exactly the kind of hardware I'd like to see Android 2.0 on...
i feel you, tareX
+1
Android on the Fortress would be an absolute dream! HTC you fools!
Is that official or is this picture messed up with the y and the z in the wrong place. Instead of qwerty, we get qwertz?
German Layout Keyboard.
It's probably a press shot from somewhere around that area of Europe. Don't worry, you'll get your QWERTY.
What I don't don't understand is why there is a qwertZ keyboard on that phone.
QWERTZ is German, so clearly at&t is hinting at their plans to buy out Deutsche Telekom and form at&T-Mobile.
Or maybe HTC screwed up and used a German render?
well seeing as microsoft stated that all WinMo7 devices have to have a dedicated Windows button neither one of these should receive an upgrade. maybe they used a different render, like someone said before, and those home buttons will be Windows buttons
that comment was for Jon (below)
@wixostrix
Actually, I just glanced at the leaked winmo 7 chassis 1 specs, it requires a 3.5" screen, the diamond 2 is only 3.2".
I don't think button labels count as hardware specs, they're just too easy to change.
Looks like the warhawk will be limited to winmo 6.5.
Check the last line, right column on the info slide.
ok... hardware wise is it is nice. But HTC is releasing way too many "Touch" phones. 12 models in less than 24 months. By the time a buyer buys one, a new model is announced and released. HTC hardly provide any updates to the phone thus obsolete almost instantly.
Why would some companies think it is good to release so many models in such short interval?
is video calling if finally coming to the us???
anyone notice the z and y keys switched?
Did you NOT read the previous posts?
noob
This hardware looks great, but when are these awesome HTC phones gonna have a next-gen operating system? Why is it that AT&T seems to be stuck, even after today's avalanche of phones, without a real good next generation phone for non-iphoners... Maybe I'm too picky, but I'd love to see this phone with android or see that android phone with some better hardware...
I personally like the dedicated numeric pad. I currently have a Tilt, and I hate having to hit the function key every time I want to type a number.
So the Warhawk is a PS3 exclusive and the Fortress is a Valve product?
it seems they have trouble counting or the picture is fake because in the specs it says it has a 5 row full qwerty keyboard but i only count 4 rows and a big reason for me to buy this one over other qwerty phones was the offset keyboard with the raised keys and it looks like att had to change another phone just to be different from everyone else’s version
Why are the Y and the Z on the qwerty keyboard switched?????????
finally, a 4 row keyboard I can respect (because it still manages to have actual number keys).
Why couldn't the HTC Lancaster have had a keyboard layout like that?
What happened to HTC? They are releasing the same styled phones over and over again. It looks like they lost there design department. I remember when HTC phones were cutting edge but now they are just another phone vendor. When do we see some real progress from HTC? Here are some ideas: AMOLED, 8MP Camera, Headphone Jack....
In regards to the 5 row keyboard, if you look at the other Touch Pro 2 pictures out there, they all show a 5 row keyboard instead of the pictured 4 row keyboard. That is probably the keyboard that the AT&T version will have.
I am having a hard time trying to figure out what new phone i want in September when my contract is up. I thought the diamond 2 but here it says that it only comes with a 3.2 mega pixel camera when on Htc's website its says that it should come with a 5.0 mega pixel. If thats the case then i am going with the pro 2 for the keyboard. It makes no sense in cutting out the higher camera there is nothing better about the diamond 2(maybe price) Ahh i am pissed now. Hopefully there is a tegra phone out by then!
I agree! They want to us to think these phones and do anything. But they restrict us with the little things. Like plugging in 2 attachments just to hook up headphones. Or taking crappy pictures with a low quality camera. Samsung is coming out with a phone with a 12.1 mega pixel camera soon. I think htc ( the leader in mobile smart phones) can do the same!
I don't think this "proprietary information" leak is real. Neither of the phones are branded with the ATT logo, there wouldn't be a German keyboard layout on a corporate mockup, and the given the contracts ATT has with Apple, I don't believe they would call the Warhawk the "Best internet touch phone"...even if it actually is.
Take a closer look at the keyboard. Its QWERTZ not QWERTY. That is not for North American consumption......
I love the idea of the separate numeric keypad to the right . . . but . . . I wonder why AT&T has chosen to use the telephone-keypad layout, rather than the calculator-keypad layout?
The telephone-keypad layout will not facilitate the creation and editing of MS Excel spreadsheets -- or any other data-entry tasks.
Fake-Mock-Up
Fact Check Time, that is not for ATT, it has a QWERTZ keyboard, not a QWERTY, as noticed by NonPlayerChar from XDA-Developers, that is actually from Germany, and the Red should clue u in that its from T-Mobile, thats a fake mock up, it's a Germany T-Mobile version of the TP2. The Orange and Blue arent even the official color matches of ATT.

Expect ATT to screw up the keyboard, but hopefully not like that. sorry germany u got screwed.

Why no Ctrl key???!!! And Home and End (and Tab) keys would be nice too. The smaller Fuze has more keys than this...at least the Fuze's less-useful shortcut keys can be remapped to Ctrl, Tab, Home, End. Every half-useful keyboard should have a dedicated Ctrl key directly adjacent to the Shift key, for easy keyboard combinations such as Ctrl+Shift+right arrow (and Ctrl+Shift+End, etc.)
It would be really helpful if Windows Mobile keyboards could attempt to more closely emulate regular full-size keyboards. (I wouldn't even mind seeing an Alt key, for use in creating customizable keyboard shortcuts to favorite applications.) Why does AT&T feel compelled to re-design (cripple) their phones' keyboards?
