Who said Nokia doesn't have a major commitment to North American carriers? We've landed news of a whole plethora of Espoo-sourced devices scheduled to hit AT&T over the coming months, and a few in particular caught our eye. Most notably, the Mako (pictured) is unlike anything we've ever seen Nokia make, mostly thanks to a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard that doesn't really resemble any existing hardware. It rides on the same S60 3.2-based platform as the
6650 and
E71x, features dual-band HSDPA, a 2.4-inch QVGA display, AGPS, 2 megapixel camera, Video Share, and 128MB of internal storage with microSD expansion. Sadly -- this is going to be a dream killer for some folks, we think -- it's only got a 2.5mm headphone jack, which is a step back for multimedia support. This one was at one time targeted for June 5, but if we had to guess, it's been pushed back -- maybe we're crazy, but we feel like it hasn't leaked enough to meet that date at this point. Anyhow, looks like this one's a good foil for that
QWERTY swivel allegedly due on Verizon.
Speaking of "this looks nothing like a Nokia," the Thresher is an ultra-glossy slider that doesn't quite resemble anything officially announced in other markets. It shares its Series 40 guts with Grouper, which was the codename assigned to the
6750 Mural flip we recently saw hit the FCC. Both devices do HSDPA and AGPS; the Grouper makes do with a 2 megapixel cam, though, while the Thresher steps up to 3.2 with an integrated flash. The Thresher's signed up for September and the Grouper for July, but as with all of these, it's anyone's guess whether those dates will hold.
Finally, the Snapper flip is a lower-end device that we could envision replacing the
6555, lacking the Grouper's style but still staying strong with triband HSDPA, Bluetooth 2.1, AGPS, and a 2 megapixel camera. This one's tentatively targeted for August.
Nice to see Nokia shaking up their designs a bit.
AT&T, AT&T, AT&T everrrrywheeerrreeee. 2009 is obviously AT&T's year.
Why doesn't Nokia just call them all flounder and be done with it. The air is starting to stink with all those dead fish cellphones.
what... did AT&T pay engadget to post links about them today???
I'm going to be cliche and say Verizon is a better network even though everyone thinks the phones are crippled- BUT who cares how a phone works when their network actually works when you need it to?
PLEASE TELL ME- I HATE AT&T, I WAS TRAPPED INTO A PLAN WITH THEM FOR WAY TOO LONG!!!
BLACKBERRY STORM 2 anyone?
Jesus, lotta leaks at AT&T!?!
still no SUBSIDIZED N series...
IMO, the E71x is better than any of the N-series phones currently out. That's probably not much consultation if you're after a decent camera though.
Damn, Engadget is on a roll today?
I thought I was on Engadget Mobile for a while there... Why so many cell phone stories?
@Who?
Isn't this Engadget Mobile? OMG where am I :S
:P
I must say though, the glossy Nokia looks amazing!
@ googleadam
Be more specific.
@Gad Get
the ultra-glossy slider...
HO LY SHIT, Is this Engadget Mobile or what?
12 Mobile Phone stories in a row?
Was splitting a single leaked AT&T Document into *6* individual articles really necessary?
I guess I will have to find someplace else to get my tech news now that Engadget is selling out to the phone companies.
@ Casper42
They're split into separate stories because they're about different phones. Or would you prefer one gigantic jumble of Blackberry, Nokia, HTC, etc?
Guess ATT isn't taking this Palm Pre thing lying down.
LOL, 12 stories in a row about phones and the last 6 have all been about AT&T.
It looks like a giant trackpad in that picture.
Did I forget to mark my calendar for the annual cell phone-engadget-carnage event?
It's Sunday, you should be grateful.
I am loving all these cell phone news. I am serious!
Me too, I f'ing love finding out about cell phones. WTF, I don't know why but I am.
Psion used to have a clamshell PDA called the Mako.
With all these new Netbooks and SmartPhones out there I just wished there was a device that approximated the Psion Mako (or its larger cousin 5MX) in form factor:
http://orig.courier-journal.com/gizweb/cols/00/0010c.htm
Something I can sit on the table and finger-peck but at the same time, thumb type if needed. The Psion OS was pretty awesome - better than the Palm OS at that time (1999) IMHO. If only someone would bring it back and add Wifi/3G and firefox, I'd be so over that unit! (I don't really care for color - so e-ink would be cool too to increase battery life).
I thought the Nokia E90 was the one, but sadly, its keyboard sucks d**k (its impossible to finger peck)
maybe the Nokia N97, then?
Yeah N97 definitely looks more appealing than the E90
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN_LSKwnX10
But IMHO the keypad is still to small to do some typing on the table. Actually I found such a device... the M1D:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/13/umid-m1d-making-its-way-to-korea-any-day-now/
The only thing I don't like about it is the OS. XP drains too much power, although I'm no big fan of Android, I'd much prefer a netbook/smartphone tuned OS that can give me a full day's work instead of the typical crappy 2-3hrs.
The designs of these new Nokia phones are interesting. I really like the slick-glossy look of the Mako and Thresher. I just wish Nokia would offer their N-series phones stateside, especially the N97.
And I thought t-mobile was doing good this year...
"Who said Nokia doesn't have a major commitment to North American carriers? "
Actually that was me .. I said it .. does this change something? ..
Great, now even Nokia is copying Moto's last five years' worth of phone design, with the "Grouper". Speaking of which, they need to come up with some better code names. RIM's code names make you yearn for details, where Nokia's code names make you roll your eyes. I mean, seriously, "Grouper"?! Even "Snapper" and "Thresher" sound lame. And I have no idea what Mako means, but it doesn't exactly get the heart racing.
Did I mention they look nice?
grouper and snapper are fish. Thresher and Mako are sharks.
Yeah, it's pronounced "Groper", and it's a huge, and AWESOME fish.
I'm pretty sure it's not Nokia coming up with the names - Nokia has Finnish codenames for the phones, or international ones, like Merlin. I guess these are the actual AT&T names?
(Although, it would be cool for Nokia to drop the numbering and just name their series finally, like N, E, Basic (1xxx), Music-series (5xxx)).
@CJ
With a tender white flesh. Neutral tasting. Very popular in Asian cuisine, popularly breaded, deep fried, tossed in with sweet/sour sauce and pepper.
Dammit, I'm hungry
Move over Digg and Drudge, AT&T and Engadget have taken over the internet.
Seriously. I was also one of the ones thinking I was on Engadget Mobile for a second. Looks like AT&T is making a power play. Glad it is with interesting phones instead of free-with-contract run of the mill pieces.
12 cell phone posts in a row. I think that may be a record, Engadget.
The Grouper phone.
For naughty Japanese businessmen on crowded subway trains.
Is there a Flasher phone?
Are these code names or actual release names? I'd think the former...
These are "filler" phones , 2 megapixel? no modern nokias come with a 2 megapixel cam. Must be some type of china cheap deal to att
whats with all the at&t leaks today... not that im complaining. im excited for a lot of these devices....
Seriously, what is it with Nokia and dual band HSDPA - why not just plop in a triband chipset like everyone else?
Otherwise I like it. Except for the 2.5mm jack.
S60 is fantastic
I'm switching over to at&t very soon, i don't know if i should wait for these or just get a phone now. Any news on prices for these phones?

Nokia Mako seems to get their design inspiration from the iPhone, you can see that they used rectangular corners, chrome bezel, and reflective surface.
Of course, they are stealing from Apple, that's obvious. Like the Nokia N81 with "rectangular corners, chrome bezel, and reflective surface" - http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2007/08/29/nokia-n81-hands-on/
(from 2007)
All these AT&T leaks...WTF?! Looks like the work of some disgruntled ex-employee.
"I'm Fired?" Fine.
"Hello Engadet? How'd you like the scoop on all of AT&T's phone releases for this year?"
The Mako looks poorly conceived... the screen could be significantly larger
FIRST
FAIL!!!
I'm glad to see AT&T get some Nokia love, especially S60 love. However, let's be real, these are pretty low end phones, and are not going to do much to enhance Nokia's brand image in the US.
Take this Mako side slider:
LCD: A huge, sexy phone, but then it has a tiny, square low-res LCD. What's with all the wasted real-estate? Couldn't they AT LEAST have plopped in the screen from the 5800?
Camera: Where the heck are they getting these 2MP cameras from? Nokia has built a reputation on imaging powerhouse phones. Heck, even the 6600 Slide S40 device has been bumped up to 5MP AF. Nokia should not be churning out anything with less than a 3.2MP AF camera.
In my opinion, AT&T should be getting:
1) Instead of Thresher, the 6600 Slide (in either 3.2 MP or 5MP version) with US 3G, or at least give the "Thresher" body the guts of the 6600 Slide
2) Instead of Snapper, the 6600 Flip
3) Instead of Grouper, hell, I dunno. What do you say to the company that STILL keeps copying the RAZR?
4) Instead of Mako, the Nokia 5730 (unless AT&T can convince Nokia to make the Make with a 5800 screen, S60 v5, a 3.5 mm jack and at least a 3.2 MP AF cam)
Come on Nokia, you can do a lot better than this!
The Mako is fairly tiny - 96x54x15mm, and I'd say the screen is quite adequate for that size.
I love the look of the Mako ... if it just had:
1) a 5 row keyboard
2) a tilt screen (like the N97)
3) 800x480 screen resolution
4) Maemo, instead of Symbian
And, maybe if it was large enough for a 4.1" screen (but otherwise the same layout).
That would be a VERY SEXY beast.
Hey ,
RAI soft Total Media Player is one of the best and well known media
players.....its also known to its Youtube and Live Tv feature....
http://raisoft.tk/
I have two questions about this release: 1) Will Nokia make unlocked offerings on their website (e.g. E71 vs, E71x), and 2) Will AT&T strip all the good Symbian software out (like the native email client) and replace it with its own watered-down, ham-fisted software (e.g. Xpress Mail) like in the E71x?
i think the most interesting part in this whole leak is that the Mako has "Video Exchange" listed as a feature. Unless at&t has come up with a different feature that they decided to use the term for, then this could very well be the USA's first true 2-way video calling phone. That would also lead me to believe the phone was pushed back since nothing has been announced/leaked regarding at&t's video exchange plans.
