Santok's USB-infused in-car charger is just what the doctor ordered
You know the dilemma all too well -- you need a cigarette outlet to charge up your PND, yet a spare USB socket would totally come in handy for juicing up that DAP whilst crossing the country in a '74 Chevelle. Enter Santok, which has just introduced what could possibly be the mother of all in-car chargers. Aside from turning a single cigarette socket into two, it also adds a pair of powered USB ports, leaving us only yearning for a couple of AC sockets to really cap things off. 'Course, we aren't so much for melted center consoles, so maybe we'll just color ourselves satisfied. Now, if only we could spot a price...

Wall-E is that you?
That is the first thing that came to mind too. Totally playing on the Wall-e.
Punch it, Chewie. I just hope we don't have a burn-out.
Batteries Not Included anyone?
No man, that's Johnny 5.
wall-e? WAAALLLLL-EEEEEEE!
johnny five is ALIVE!
exactly what I was thinking but where is his laser on his shoulder to destroy the evil skynet versions of himself?
That's the first thing that came to my my mind also.
"Who's Johnny?" she said and smiled in her special way...
The Johnny #5 I knew had a lot more emotional looking eyes.
This could be an episode on "Deadliest warrior", Wall-E vs Jhonny 5!

Ya, people need to be careful how much current they're actually trying to draw.. Cig lighter slots I believe are all 12v, so if you charge a phone and an iPod, you're pretty close to maxed out right there.. Heating up the lighter for your spliff might overload it and voilà, car fire.
What's the cause of abortion in this country?

People don't kill people, stupid kills people.
It's all about wattage, not voltage.
Do you kill people?
No time for baffling inappropriate singsong, Neddy.

You really have it in for weed, I have never died, been aborted or crashed a car and I've been stoned for about16 years now, why do you invent statistics ?
Maybe you should find out about the interesting correlation between voltage, amperage and wattage (if I may) before babbling on about stuff you apparently have no idea about... Oh btw, I'm stoned off my face and still managed to put you in your place, boy! :D
u would blow the fuse long before a car fire..
i got a cig lighter stuck in the sockit before and the fuse blew
It's not the voltage, it's the amperage. Your cell phone charger, ipod, 12v blender, and usb powered humping dog toy combined only use a fraction of what can safely be outputted to one port.
This guy is great! Every single one of his statements is full of holes! It's like he has no understanding of anything he is talking about, maybe the stupid will kill him. We can only hope.
Indeed as said, the Voltage in itself is nothing, The lighter has a 5A fuse (in most cars) in it, so with 12V, we get (around) 60W out of it. Single USB device may draw a maximum of 500mA current (USB specs) and operates at 5V, which is about 2.5W... You may stick plenty of usb charges on that before the fuse is in any danger :)
"People don't kill people, stupid kills people"?
Hell, your post should come with a surgeon general's warning, baby! Ha!

Johnny Number 5! [in a very Indian accent]
why do i have a feeling the second you turn off your car and leave it on contact the car battery would die
Up here at the The Source (thesource.ca) we got one with 2 USB and 3 car outlets.
There have been devices like this around for a while. Head to a truck stop and you can find one with 4 lighter plugs and 2 USB ports for a few bucks.
This has got to be the third thread full of Short Circuit references that I've seen within the past week. :D
Loving the first two comments. Their resulting trees could be rival gangs...
Whats the big fuss? I picked one up at FRY's in CA for 10 bux a month ago. Wasn't by the same firm though. And clearly, they aren't the first.
I had thought for a long time now that auto companies needed a smaller unviversal power port for gadgets like phones, PMP, GPS, etc. The USB port was a logial choice for me since most devices charge on that standard these days. It would also be a novel way to get PMPs to port music to the car stereo. Read it right from the file stores and play it with no distortion and ideally even control the tracks from the stereo head unit. Some cars do that today. Hyundai is the only one I have seen so far, but I am sure there are others. (of course it only plays off of memory sticks).
Cars should have at least a couple of these USB ports for power only. The better option would be power and stereo interface.
http://www.intrex.com/parts/parts.aspx same thing... @ a local pc store .. cant beat $13 either.
