Nokia's N810 successor coming later this year with 3G and Maemo 5?
MobileCrunch claims to have pictures (which it can't publish for security reasons, unfortunately) and complete specs for Nokia's next-gen internet tablet -- and although we don't have any corroborating evidence to back up the story, everything they've got makes perfect sense. We've known for the better part of a year now that Nokia has been planning an OMAP3-based N810 replacement with 3G that would run Maemo 5, and that's exactly what this new device seems to be with a 3.5-inch wide VGA display, WiFi, full HSPA, 32GB of onboard storage expandable to 48GB (presumably via microSD), and -- get this -- a 5 megapixel AF camera with dual LED flash. GSM voice and VoIP are both in the cards, making this the closest thing yet to a Maemo-powered phone -- and in a sick, twisted way, the 5 megapixel camera plus sliding keyboard almost put it in direct competition with the upcoming N97. Indeed, carriers are taking direct interest in this thing, with T-Mobile apparently interested both in Europe and the States; it seems we could expect a European release as soon as July, with T-Mobile USA nabbing it in an AWS 3G flavor closer to fall. Makes an eventual divorce from S60 all that much more plausible for Nokia, doesn't it?

been seeing lots of these deals recently
Maybe its called Maemo 5 ... no?
I really, really like my N800 and I've been looking forward to upgrading when the next Nokia tablet is released. However, a major reason that I like the N800 is that it is not tied to any carrier and has no contract as it's wifi only. I'd like to have the *option* of 3G, but I really hope that it's not a carrier-exclusive, mandatory 2-year data contract thing. I've had my eye on the G1 too, but T-Mobile doesn't offer service in my area. It'd be a shame if Nokia limits the customer base for the next internet tablet by tying it to a carrier/contract.
I agree, I had a N800 but sold it earlier since I knew the N810 successor was coming. I too hope you can get this without being tied into a contract.
Uhh... the stats are identical to the Nokia N97. Maybe this is the future of the N97 :) hmmm....
I take it back... the N97 uses a different processor
O_o wow, if those specs are true, then this device would be as close to a cell phone/gaming device, since a D-pad is there :D, just hope that their OS gets plenty of developers :) and not left like the N800. Hmmm, the only thing that would be better is if the screen size is set to 3.7" - 4". Hope that Nokia polishes the OS to go great with the HW :).
I wonder if this Maemo device can go head to head with the upcoming WM7 devices?
A bit off topic but could someone please explain to me all this mobile news?! Is there some show going on?? I thought that's what Engadget mobile was for...
Excuse me? is it a phone or just an Internet tablet that can use 3G? Thanks
Seems its internet tablet thats eaten a cellphone.
Well I think it's both.
Maemo can handle phone calls so if the baby has a microphone, which I think it does, I suppose it's a phone (somehow).
3.5 inch screen? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.......
The N800 form factor was perfect :-(
Completely agreed. I'm using an N800 and was looking forward to another Nxxx device, but 4"+ is required, no way do I want 3.5" screen.
They should have kept the 4.1" screen. I'm really disappointed by shrinking the device, and making it basically a plain slate. It would have been MUCH better to go with a large N97, or large Mako design.
That said, I'm pleased as punch that it'll have full phone (voice and SMS) capabilities.
Guys, I think that internet tablet is a bit bad name for this device. I think it's a high end smart phone.
awesome, was waiting for N810 to drop to 99 GBP, happy to wait so I can get rid of my HTC Cruise and N800 for a all in one solution as long as it fits my Brodin car cradle. I just hope I can move my wayfinder license over. Right now I use my HTC for gps (tom tom London), skype and surfing when there is no Wifi or your moving in a vehicle. Given the choice I prefer the N800 for gps (world wide), skype and surfing but right now you can not do that while on the move which defeats the whole purpose. I probably use the N800 more at home than on the move.
Why not? Can't you tether the N810 to your HTC?
Finally!
I think the specs are a bit wrong. It's well known that the resolution is going to be 800x480 as the current tablet - screen size is unknown. And the device that was suppose to be the replacement of the N8XX was data only HSPA - i.e. no calls. So either this is a maemo phone that has been rumored or the specs are off a bit.
Finally, I hope they get a WiMax version of this soon....and that Clearwire can flip the switch on their network.....
(hint: Clearwire is planning on integrating VOICE/DATA into WiMax.....they may tout it as a data thing, but really it's not.....Sprint is desperate so they have to take huge leaps and they're willing to innovate.....)
WiMAX is dead as far as Nokia is concerned.

Ooh...I'm torn. I'd love to be able to drop to one device; and a bump in RAM and CPU would certainly be nice. (I do a lot of programming on my N810.) But a smaller screen is a problem, as is the lack of a directional pad.
And I'm not sure this thing would be such a great phone. With my N95, if I need to call my wife, I flip it open and press 2. A Maemo device wouldn't have that kind of dedicated setup...probably.
There's also the fact that my N810 is just a touch unreliable. This mostly comes up when I'm doing a long compile; sometimes I'll set it going, then come back and find that it's crashed and rebooted. I'm not sure I want that happening with my phone.
Dude, you'll love this new device then. The OMAP3 in the device is at least an 600Mhz ARM Cortex-A8 core which is roughly equal to a 1.2Ghz ARM11. Even better perhaps is the fact that the OMAP 3 has the Imagination PowerVR SGX530 graphics core which is roughly 2-3X faster than the chip in the iPhone. I don't believe the older 800/810 tablets even supported graphics acceleration. You should be able to do some kickass OpenGL stuff on this device.
Additionally, the ARM Cortex-A8 blows away the ARM11 in SIMD/media processing with the new NEON SIMD unit. The ARM11's "VFP" or whatever is does not really use SIMD. It would just execute many scalar floating point calculations SEQUENTIALLY using one instruction so at least the instruction pipeline wasn't a bottleneck. The new Cortex NEON engine is a true SIMD unit that can operate on two 32-bit floating points (or integers) simultaneously. Besides the SIMD unit, the OMAP3 also includes next-generation dedicated logic for digital imaging and video processsing/decoding
All that sounds really nice...and leaves me wondering about battery life. :-)
I was hoping to get the N810 next month, but with this specs leaks i ll ve to wait for something official to be announced. Pricing ll also be a big deciding factor
Hope they make somethings better, like making the root partition bigger, making skype work with the camera for video chats, etc. I really wonder about the 3G... is it data only or does it include voice? If it is data only, perhaps it just means that you insert your SIM into the M5 device and you're good to go?
Is Maemo 5 finally taking advantage of hardware graphics acceleration? The T.I. OMAP3 is awesome!
The whole UI is build upon Clutter, which is a 3D library - in other words, yes, the 3D hardware is used. For everything.
excellent! So we can hope that the browser (webkit based right) will be silky smooth to zoom and scroll like the Pre and iPhone?
Why!!!?! why do i always buy a product right before its successor comes out?
Down in front!
The small screen is a bit of a let down but otherwise, looks real good.
I’m happy with my N800 (which i like more than the N810, by the way).. But it would be really nice to have one internet tablet with phone capabilities…
The only problem is the small screen…
But it seems much better than the N97 though..
