Luckily we've got solid word of
HTC's Touch Pro2 headed for
all of the majors Stateside, or this would come as a bit more of a blow for the hopelessly selfish Windows Mobile users among us: HTC's QWERTY slider flagship is now available online and unlocked, though its Euro-centric nature means there's no 3G for folks who'd like to use it in the wilds of the United States of America. Still, there's plenty of greatness here outside the HSPA data, and the $800-ish pricetag doesn't seem too unreasonable for what you get. And hey, maybe you live in Europe -- we're not ones to judge.
that leaked lancaster looks to be pretty promising
but the lancaster has an even crappier 320x240 display, and it's not OLED like the samsung's.
I've been tempted to buy an unlocked phone from overseas many times, but the fact that the 3g doesn't work here is a deal breaker for me. I bought a Touch Pro the day AT&T got them in and I loved it. A friend saw it and follow suit a couple months later. Yet another friend ended up ordering online a few weeks after that and ended up getting a euro model with the matte back and the diamond shaped box. I had to tell him his 3g was crippled... I guess he didn't do his research.
I am torn between the Touch Pro 2 when it comes stateside or the Nokia n97 though. Tough choice :(
I upgraded to the Touch Pro AT&T Fuze) not long ago and unloaded that POS in less than 3 days. The radio on it was atrocious, worse than the Kaiser/Tilt. The thing was continually bouncing in and out of the Edge network in a strong 3G signal area, and even dropping off the network on occasion. Also upgraded my wife to the Samsung Eternity at the same time, and while I was dropping off the network, she had solid 4 bars of 3G signal. The radio was crap, and after researching a bit, found out it was a widely experienced issue. To the extent of a 35+ % return rate on the phones.
I am very interested in the TP2, but I think I am going to hold off and see what the radio has to offer. If they haven't improved the radio, then the phone will be one of the most expensive POS bricks ever bought.
I'm by no means an iphone fanboy either .. HTC does an excellent job of providing more features on the phone (better cameras, etc). Apple does a better job of hyping their app-store.

$800 and no 3g, is that what it means, i mean this looks like a communication device but no 3g, try explaining that....FAIL.
I am hoping the article means that the currently available Euro version will mean that the included 3G will not work in the US. The US version better have a working 3G. But at $800, I doubt I'll ever get this phone, since I don't like the form factor anyway.
i hope so too! it better do have a US version the this market, but you know its kind of a dissapointment still, they want me to buy a $800 device that i cant carry for business because it has regional version, i would rather buy to the regional phones so that i can use them on travel.
800 is better than 895 for an unlocked Pre from best buy.

You got that right, engadget. Dam luckily. Now give me your word it's solid.
I'm sticking with my Xperia X1, and it only cost me $300 for a slightly used unit with similar features to the touch pro 2.
Question, with that huge resolution (and at the same time, reasonably small) screen, how does it go with the finger(nail) freindlyness?
I tried one today, and it seems like the resolution makes it impossible to scroll in WM without the stylus.
Nice looking device.
Did anyone else actually follow the links before going off on the price listed??? It's almost as bad as when the crew at Autoblog post the direct conversion of cars for sale in the UK or the rest of the EU countries for cars that aren't for sale stateside.
It's listed for 444 pounds on the same site that has the 'regular' Touch Pro for 404 pounds, and the Touch HD is 434 pounds all excluding VAT, which you'd dodge if you don't live in the UK.
While 444 pounds is 707 USD today if you're looking to import, it's not too far off from the other offerings when you put it in perspective for the in-demand device (few available).
glyde turned smart and sexy. im down
Why in the world would you get this over the regular touch pro. Processor and ram is the same but the touch pro 2 is missing the d-pad and the led light.
3.6" > 2.8" and yes i will miss the D-Pad and LED light greatly if/when i get it
600$+ phone
NO 3.5mm Headphone JACK = no buy
Try again HTC
Just get the X1, same hardware, but in a smaller sleaker package, and it has a 3.5mm jack.
Ok this phone like best spec out there is feature rich removble btry keyboard etc
So y is it that it will still fail hard to kill iPhone ,. Doesn't generate even 10% of iPhone buzz y is that so many highend top notch phones that are far more feature rich don't even measure up to iPhone insanely high desirability rate,?
Y?
Some say marketing?some say fanboyism
Question
If I choose iPhone for $99 over this $800 htc
Will I be called iPhone apple fanboy or htc hater?
No just a smart dummy.
totally not a "guru", comparing an iphone and this one is comparing apples to oranges, hehe ;)
neither.
Most people would either go with "asshole", or "Virgin"
6 way conference call on a mobile phone? yeah right in your dreams.
and how come my contact photos never look that perfect. It is like everyone in the office went and had glamour shots done. They all must work at Imaginary Co.
It's because they probably used a decent camera to take the pictures and not the phones crappy camera. Seriously... you can do that you know ;)
I have the Touch Pro now and my interest is high on the TP2... Going to wait a few months after release to see if it's worth upgrading or if there will be a better WinMo phone out for Sprint by Feb.
On contract? Off contract? What does it matter? Unlocked phones in the US give you the choice between T-Mobile (aka Yawn-coverage) and AT&T (aka Yawn-speed). We're all going to get $65+ contracts anyway for a phone like this, to get unlimited data/text/etc, so you're not going to save anything in the long run by buying at full MSRP and get some ultra cheap plan. I don't get it. Someone please enlighten me as to why this is better than on a 2-year contract...or why the $800 would be more cost effective than even a UMID on 3G and a separate voice only, non-smart phone? $400-500, maybe, but $800??? ouch.
B/c
1. You don't have to update the terms of your contract and spend $$$ (i.e. use a non-PDA unlimited internet plan for much, much less per month),
2. You aren't locked to your carrier if you move or find a better deal
3. When traveling you can use a pre-paid sim since the phone is factory unlocked
4. You get the device months before everyone else (at least with the way these things tend to trickle down to the US)...if they indeed do get it released to their specific carrier
thanks for the response Chris, but I suppose I wasn't clear enough in my post. I tried to specifically describe why some of your common points seem...pointless.
1. I'm not sure what you're getting at here. Is there really significant savings (i.e. $800/24 months=$33/month, say $30/month) to had by choosing some plan that you couldn't pick on a 2-year contract anyway? Or are you suggesting some sort of data-only plan for this phone?
2. Is being able to flip-flop between AT&T and T-Mobile at will really such a bonus? Is anyone really doing or going to do this?
3. True, and good point...for you and the other 0.1% of cell phone purchasers. This justifying an $800 sticker is a bit of a stretch (unless you can expense it).
4. ...and the $1500 Sony Betamax players, when they were first released, didn't fly off the shelves either to the underwhelming early adopter crowd.
Why is it that HTC is now worse than Apple when it comes to phone prices. The phones they make feel overpriced just using them.
My stupid htc touch pro was over $400.00 and felt like it was worth less than $200.00 poor quality
Better get the iPhone, it has 3.5mm headphone jack in addition to OSX, the best mobile operating system on the planet.
What do Jobs' privates taste like?
Probably like Gooooooooooooooold!
Probably the same as if you licked his elbow.
Yes, I'm implying that he has no privates. Well, he HAD them, but after thousands of fanboys repeatedly licking them, he was forced to have reconstructive surgery due to... Erosion.
Any word on Sprint realease and price?
Want you very much!
A few reasons to buy (or not) this phone :
- can it record video ?
- can it send MMS ?
- can you copy-paste text ?
- can you change the battery ?
- can you customize the notification system ?
- is the bluetooth A2DP ?
- does it have an FM radio ?
- can you use the AGPS with 3rd partu apps as TomTom or Navigon or iGo ?
- ...
:-)
juste kidding fanboys.
Ah yes.. the beautiful HTC Touch Pro 2 running windows mobile. What a beauty... I have been using the first version of this phone since it was originally launched and I am really looking forward to upgrading to the new version as well as windows mobile 6.5.
HTC TP2 without a digital compass is a deal breaker. WTF? The HTC Dream has a digital compass.
IBM Seer type apps not possible without compass. Too bad, I was looking forward to porting Android to it and building some cool LBS capabilities.
@Me4u2
Um, the Touch Pro 2 has an FM radio
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4359027&posted=1#post4359027
I use it on my T-Mobile Touch Pro 2 ( USA )
Oh, and I got mine from the T-Mobile store for $279 because when I called for pricing they misquoted ( should be $350 apparently ) and noted my account with it, so they had to honor it :)
