yeah, after all those 800x480 and higher rumors, this is a huge letdown. This low resolution also probably shoots down any dreams of playing XBLA games on the device.
I'm also really disappointed the screen bezel is still huge. Oh well, if this thing has a 64 gig version I'll still get it to replace my 80 gig 2nd gen Zune.
@ifalldownstairs I too am disappointed by the resolution, however this res is still comparable to a standard definition television, and therefore xbox live games should (in theory) be playable.
Still, sucks that they didn't go for the 800x600 jugular (or similar rez).
the screen is going to be awesome. The Sony XEL-1 has a res of 960x540 and it's 11 inches. We have one in the office. It's the best picture I've ever seen. granted, it's only 11" but still. This res on a screen of this size has "potential" to be great. let's just wait and see. I just don't see any reason why a 3.3-inch, 480 x 272 OLED won't kick ass after seeing the XEL-1 with such low res look great at 11".
The resolution is a little disappointing considering what they were able to pack into the touch diamonds screen. It is interesting that its a 16:9 screen. According to gizmondo it will output 720p through the dock which has HDMI(Veeeerrrrrrrrryyyyy interesting)
Well, since it doesn't launch till fall I suggest we all whine as hard as we can until then. DAMMIT MICROSOFT WHAT IS THIS?! AN OLED FOR ANTS? IT HAS TO BE AT LEAST...THREE TIMES HIGHER RESOLUTION.

The high resolution screen absolutely kills the Diamond. Thats one of the reasons its such a slow device. Its too high a resolution with too slow of a processor. I speak from alot of experience.
This low resolution is more due with either: OLED as the display choice, and thus limited options. Performance concerns (one would think Tegra would alleviate that, if it has it). OLED as the display choice, making the lower resolution less noticable. An intention for extremely graphically intense games which would run better on lower resolution.
Regardless, the Diamond and Touch Pro (and Touch Pro/Diamond 2) should NOT have the screens they have with piece of shit processors they use. Just because they have high resolution screens proves only that HTC went for specs over usability when they made those devices.
Actually this might be the same panel used on the cowon s9, specs are the same. About which I've seen no complaints.
Also, if you do the math, due to the different AR's the screen on the HD is only 5/100ths of an inch narrower than the iPod touch. Though about 3/10ths shorter.
ok. this is more than a coincidence. the upcoming sony x series walkman has the exact same resolution for the screen, and so does the cowon s9. so there seems to be a trend here. either its difficult to make really high res oleds or something?
You people need to stop complaining about the screen resolution, what do you expect? People lived for well over 50 years with TVs that had this kind of resolution or less and you guys are complaining about 3.3" OLED screen that fits in your pocket and displays this resolution. The resolution is perfectly wonderful.
Talk about high standards for what will ultimately be a $200-300 device.
You know that that's still a higher resolution than the x-series that Sony just released, right? The one that this blog said had the best-looking screen they've ever seen? With OLED, resolution isn't nearly as important as with normal LCD. Don't cry about the screen, I'm betting it's going to look fantastic

Major screen resolution letdown.
I hope they don't waste a Tegra chip on a 480 x 272 screen.
My reaction as well.

I remember how microsoft advertised it's "big" and "amazing" 320x240 zune screen, this wasn't a surprise
well, the "big" was the actual size of the screen... the "amazing" was marketing BS.

ah, screw that. this is going to the top of my "things i want" list.
Something is wrong. You cant watch HD video on a less-than-VGA screen... I bet there is a mistake somewhere.

The PSP has the same resolution and looks great, also the PSP outputs at a higher resolution when hooked up to an external display (TV).
@dcoaster
Nope - typical Microsoft bullshit!

+1 for zoolander refrence

The resolution is a deal breaker for me. In fact, it's so low that the word "Marketplace" can't even fit in the home screen. WTF?
480 x 27211??
When you put HD on a product, I think video resolution, not radio. C'mon Microsoft, 480 x 272 is not HD.
If the lcd was truly 720p and was just slightly smaller than the vaio p, then I would be impressed.

anyone got any thoughts ?
Actually the Sony's a 3.0" 240x432.
It's not that they can't make higher rez screens, but that we're getting into the area of cost versus value.
Would you pay a $100-$200 premium for that higher rez screen.
What I really wanted to see was the screen from the Omnia HD, MS and Sammy have ties, yes? Aren't Sammy sets still the official HDTV of the Xbox 360?

@ Michael
Standard def TV is higher than the Zune HD screen: 720x576 for PAL and 720x480 for NTSC.
Still, the screen is 167 PPI, which is way more than most computer screens and all TV sets.
@ Lunkmark
And way less than all high-end phones and MIDs.
The worst thing is I won't be able to watch my DVDrips on full quality (VGA). The thing is called "Zune HD" for crying out loud.
