Android 1.5 update for T-Mobile G1 now rolling out, for real this time
There have been a whole bunch of false starts on this, but honestly, folks -- for real, we're not messing around -- T-Mobile has finally started distributing Android 1.5 over-the-air to American G1 owners. This means that anyone who hasn't taken the time to install the update of their own accord is just about to get hooked up without any intervention whatsoever, bringing third-party widget support, a virtual keyboard, email and messaging improvements, a revised UI, and of course, an endless font of delicious pastries that will make you morbidly obese if you eat enough of them over time. Honestly, while you're waiting for the update to arrive, hop on the Bowflex for a few minutes. It's not going to kill you.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

'appy b'rthday!
Funny how your name fits Google's update naming scheme. I like.
JUST got my cupcake !
theres even a smliey face button !!!!!! :-)
I had a friend get it a couple of days ago... it sounded like OtA... been waiting for it to show up on my little G1!
Google's pastries will be mine!
I've already got it on mine via the link from Download Squad. Totally worth it. Glad I went with a G1 over other options.
all 8 g1 owners are anticipating this very greatly.
You mean all >1 million of us. :P
Trollllllllllllll!
Go back to your iFail with your fart apps and let the big boys talk.
Nine, now.
I'm fucking loving it.
Well, if you're nine, then I make 10. Ohhzz noes, were in double digits.
How many new phones running iPhone OS are coming out this year again?.....
12 Gazzillion and 2
waiting.....
just got my OTA houston TX
If i only had an Android phone...Seriously, i need a new phone.
Well, later this year T-Mo will have 3 so you'll have nice options to choose from.
Ha, been running cupcake for some time now, and as awesome as cupcake is, BRING ON DONUT, GOOGLE!!!
hey glad to see you got everything up and running.
I am waiting for Toaster Strudel, myself.
No, Muffin Top is gonna be the best update
I've heard that "Devils Food Cake" has a few bugs in it though.
I am still praying to the God of Cupcakes for my OTA 1.5 for my G1....still waiting.
Already did the manual install. Big improvement, now I want a doughnut ham hamburger.
Anyone with a Cupcake G1 that uses BT headphones, how is the battery life with A2DP?
Haven't had a chance to use mine for too long, but so far battery life is still decent with BT left on all day.
I got the update, and I'm on an unlocked G1 on ATT with no data plan. The other night it told me an update was ready to install (it must have background downloaded via wifi) and I hit install and it did it right there.
I was worried I'd have to manually update and root the phone or something, but it worked out.
That's good news for us Canadian folks using the unlocked G1 on Rogers or Fido. I know all the other OTA updates have made it my way, but I always figured the one update I actually need, won't.
Just as an update, my Unlocked T-Mobile G1 running on the Rogers network received the OTA update today. It's great!
did you need to re activate your phone using data (ie typing in your gmail) or does it just remember? I do not have a data plan and I originally had to type in my gmail address with someone who had a simcard with data. I don't want to do the update and be screwed.
Anybody with the UK cupcake who got an OTA US version update? I am wondering if I will have to manually downgrade my G1, first...
*stares at G1*
UPDATE DAMN YOU!
Same here. Don't have the update yet and it's Thursday 10:30PM Arizona time.
Dude, just go to xda-developers.com and snag the update there before. I live in AZ too and i couldnt wait for the tmo update, so i went there and got it, plus, i already have the JF version anyways.
Updated mine manually Saturday, Cupcake is awesome! Love the straight to Youtube upload for videos.
The update is amazing, the phone's UI and animations are sexy. I also love the calendar and music gadget. What I love about this phone is google allows you to customize the hell out of it, and by that I mean shortcuts to applications, contacts, folders, etc, anyone can make their home screen the way they want it.
Yeah, I got my update yesterday morning (May 27), here in San Francisco. Works smoothly. Love the on-screen keyboard, though it doesn't always pop up where it'd be useful. Still awaiting Bluetooth support for external keyboard.
Ya, I just got my update last night: Omaha, NE. It bugged on me though, I downloaded and installed, but it didn't work. So i had to manually install it from some site. Anybody else have this same problem? This is AMAZING! I LOVE the animation, the camcorder is decent, not the best. The battery is a smidge better, but not a whole lot better. (I only got about 1-2hours better battery then before.) Overall i am happy with this update, I've finished my cupcake, now i crave for a doughnut!
"hop on the treadmill for a few minutes. It's not going to kill you."
Ummm... bad taste -

I'm sure that's EXACTLY what they meant...
I live in Phoenix and didn't think they were talking about that, stretching a little there.
"hop on the Bowflex for a few minutes. It's not going to kill you."
They changed it already anyways.
hello
Finally... sigh.
Stereo Bluetooth is great. Every app I've tried, including iMeem works via bluetooth. My car stereo has bluetooth capabilities and its a blast to hear songs streaming from iMeem and youtube through the stereo.
I heard they were working on version 4.0 " Apple Turnover ". Only 5 more years.
Judging on Google's naming schemes, the updates are a dessert starting with the next letter in the alphabet that the last. So, after Donut, it would be Eclair, maybe.
then i say bring on funions with whipped cream!
Will this go to an unlocked G1 on AT&T?
:( I want it.
Ah, you must be a former iPhone user (no OTA updates, just random desktop iTunes 5min syncs to upload firmware and need to restore from failed update scenarios).
OTAs are carrier specific. T-mobile is sending them out. Your on AT&T, do the math.
Free your phone from the desktop!
Checking with buddies here, no cupcake updates in LosAngeles yet! ANY DAY NOW? HELLO T-MOBILE?
Hey now is that fair in any way to jump to conclusions and to attempt to downsize me? Not really. No, not previous iphone owner. Also it was no more then a simple question, no need to act like a dick, mk?
The update is sent via Google's servers, not T-Mo's. As long as you have a reliable data connection (WiFi), your phone will check in and download it automatically.
My unlocked T-Mobile G1 which is running on the Rogers network in Canada received the OTA update today. I think it has nothing to do with the carrier. And I don't use Wifi on my G1, it's entirely through the data.
So yes, I'm quite certain you will receive the update too.
Wow. Insensitive "treadmill" comment.
GTFO pansy
ive had my update since tuesday the 26 i live in pomona CA....OTA...its very nice...
TMOBILE announce a freakin' new Android handset so I can upgrade already. Also, google, I insist that you start working on bear claw and it's hotly anticipated successor Brownie right away. That way, I can be happily satiated while you work on Apple pie, strawberry tart and of course cheesecake... And no Pfeffernusse please. The powdered sugar tends to get all over my clothes and it's a pain to get out.
does it just show up on your setting\updates?
has anyone in or close to michigan gotten yet?
I updated my shit manually. Its not bad... but - it still feels like something is missing.
This fat kid is ready for some cupcake!!
portland fail
Like on the reals for reals? Or like on the reals for reals...for prentend?
I finally got my cupcake update, and against all odds it has totally lived up to hype. It's like T-Mobile just sent me a brand new phone for free, the improvement is really dramatic and it was already pretty awesome to start with. I'm so thrilled with this thing.
I haven't gotten mine, but I refuse to manually update. The joy and surprise of getting it OTA will be like the happiness of opening presents on Christmas morning. Except this Christmas has no set date or time. And this Christmas has been endlessly delayed. This is the worst Christmas ever! Curses!
Hey all of you that have the Official OTA do me a favor and tell me what the kernel and baseband versions are.. Thanks
Been running Cupcake since this morning at exactly 9:00am (Got my G1 at Launch say :) ).
Loving everything so far. Performance is dramatically improved. I love this platform.
I've been running cupcake for some time now, and I must say that G1 owners and all Android-based handset owners will be pleasantly pleased. Best Mobile OS ever, IMO.
Actually you can do manual upgrade without waiting for OTA , from Livecrunch
http://www.livecrunch.com/2009/05/27/how-to-manualy-upgrade-your-g1-with-android-15-cupcake/
Great Step by Step tutorial.
Get your HTC HERO BUILD HERE!!

I'm near Salt Lake City Utah, and I got the OTA update this afternoon. SO much better. So glad I can shoot video, now, and upload straight to YouTube!
Well I jus got 1.5 super easy. I turned wifi on my g1, then searched for a system upgrade from my settings and bam..it was right there ready to download.....I cud only see it ova my wifi...soo people give it a try and let me kno if it works. And by my method is that called a manual install, or is a manual install like when you download via a sd card?
i've got an unlocked G1 with AT&T and I've been out of the country in Pakistan for over a month and yesterday I got the Cupcake (1.5) update through wifi, because data roaming doesn't work over here. It installed fine, and now I can get Edge data through roaming on the local networks here in Pakistan. This means that the rollout for 1.5 is global and not limited to T-Mobile's OTA services. Everybody should have it by now.
Got my 1.5 update overnight. On fist boot, I still got the process.acore failing message, which started a week ago.
I'm in DC metro btw.
I am in Columbus, Ohio. My wife received her Cupcake update at 4:40 am this morning. I haven't had time to check it out but will tonight. She has only had get G1 for about three months so I am not sure what Google's roll-out strategy is for all owners.
Your phone will give you an alert that a new download is ready to install. It will install more rapidly on a wi-fi connection. You can always cancel and download later as the update will stay pushed to your phone if you are not close to wi-fi. Now T-Mobile just needs to unleash their 3G network in June to Columbus and we will be happy for a while.
Received mine OTA two nights ago in Oklahoma City. Woke up Wednesday morning and saw I had an update waiting. Installed within a few minutes (appx 10) and everything tested so far works great.
Still trying to get used to using the on-screen keyboard. I love the YouTube account tie-in. Visual changes look nice. I love how quick text message logs delete now. Usually logs with 200-500 messages would take 20 seconds or so to delete, anything over that would almost lock up the phone unless I changed the screen timeout to never. I deleted a thread yesterday with 250+ messages in it, and as soon as I hit "Delete", it disappeared. Nice!
I haven't used A2DP yet. I'm not able to judge battery life in comparison to before since I've been messing with my phone so much since the update.
My youngest brother lives about 10 miles away from me and is still yet to receive the update, so it seems to be a completely random push.
Im about an hour north of OKC in Enid and still nothing... wonder if i drive to OKC if i can get it since its still in the same t-mobile market?
Wes,
Edmond here, my youngest brother lives with my parents still in Forest Park/Lake Aluma area, about 10-15 miles away. He's restarted his phone several times, tried searching for system updates on Wi-Fi and off, still nothing. :/
Wes knows, but I should also mention OKC is NOT a 3G area.
Got it this morning in Miami. Very Cool finally can use my stereo headphones
I'm in Miami too and still haven't gotten anything. This blows. :/
I got my cupcake... I got my cupcake... and you didn't get one/cause you can't afford it...
+1 for Eddie Murphy reference
Nothing yet for me. Been checking all day.
I live in Bulgaria (Europe)
Bought a G1 today, 20 minutes after I turned it on I got the update notification ^.^
just go my update over wifi.
still NOTHING in Portland... FTLOSS
Still nothing! WTF? :/
Finally. A day later and I have my Cupcake!
(May 29, 11:00 pm)
-The on-screen keyboard operates exactly like Apple's iPhone/iPod Touch. You can change the settings to have the phone make a sound and vibrate (either/neither/both).
-Also similar to the iPhone, though not as slick, is the automatic orientation of the screen when you tilt it sideways. It only works for 2 directions (upright and right hand side up), and only works when in an app, not while in the main screen.
-The long lag between exiting the browser and getting to the main screen is no more.
-The integrated gmail now allows you to select several messages and perform different actions, including adding labels or deleting.
-G1 now does videorecording.
-Google Talk is now separated from the IM app, as a stand-alone.
-Much faster operation than before...oddly enough.
-Unusual thing...through contacts, you can now have a barcode generated...which seems like of no particular usefulness.
-Overall better GUI.
Thanks to Cupcake, my G1 is one step closer to being perfect.
FAIL STILL
Just got my update Thursday night. First changes noticed were both for the worse.
Wifi connectivity much degraded. I surf from the same location in my house every night and after the update it won't even detect my network, saying I'm out of range and leaving me on EDGE, pun intended. When it does connect, it comes and goes unless I'm in the same room as the router. And it used to connect to the wifi automatically when I woke it, now I have to tell it to connect manually half the time.
Scrolling in the browser is now choppy and it often takes a few moments to open the bookmarks screen.
Battery takes forever to charge now. Perhaps it is recalibrating or training the battery to be more accurate and it will go back to normal later? But it used to charge to full in less than an hour. Today it took over three hours to get to 100% from 55%.
I'm sure there are also improvements and I'm keen to try out the new features, but they definitely took a few steps backwards from what I can tell in a day or two of normal usage.
I can't be the only one who still hasn't gotten the update, can I? I'm constantly checking, but nothing comes up. :/
I thought the same thing and endee up doing a manual update, and it was well worth it.
I'll give it to the end of the week before I do a manual update.
Me, Me, Me.........
Got it! On-screen keyboard is convenient. The Browser doesn't have a Home button anymore, how do you get back to your home page without saving it as a bookmark.
I got my cupcake this morning at 9am phoenix az time.I love it.it runs so smooth and I like the new look of the start up and menu backround.I also like the auto lock on the dial pad.keeps me from pushing the wrong buttons.keep up the good work! This phone gets better everyday!!
just got my OTA update today. looks pretty slick. looks like i might have to spend all afternoon updating all my apps.
It appears that the worries and complaints about radiation damage that mobile phones has been forgotten but there is a far worse situation on the horizon.
Is our childrens eyesight at risk with the ever smaller font sizes used in phones nowdays. So much importance is put on the web and being able to browse from your mobile and the ability to send and receive emails. I wonder when the fallout is going to start.
In a way it already has because the market seems fixated on users being below 30years old. The only company that has been responsible in all this appears to be RIM who have always designed there phones with User Selectable Fonts. They are clever enough to avoid catchments and ageism by making sure that all users can enjoy there mobiles.
Why can't other manufacturers give there customers the same. In fact I would say that any mobile without User Selectable Fonts has no reason to call itself a smartphone.
