Sony Ericsson adds Yari and Aino to its multimedia line
Launch details for the Satio was the 800-pound news gorilla out of Sony Ericsson today, but slotting in right underneath that set are another couple of phones that are still very much in the higher end of the range -- the Yari and Aino. The Yari slider (pictured left) is being billed as a gaming device, featuring gesture-controlled actions in the same vein as the Wii (and for the record, that's Sony Ericsson's comparison as much as it is ours). It features a 2.4-inch display, GPS, and support for the company's PlayNow services; it'll be available in the fourth quarter for about €400 ($558) unlocked. Next up, the Aino takes some cues from the Satio with a relatively large 3-inch touchscreen -- but also tosses in a numeric slider for good measure. It's got an 8.1 megapixel cam, Sony Remote Play support, GPS, HSPA, and a scratch-resistant mineral glass display; it'll be ready to rock in the same timeframe as the Yari in black and white, though we don't have pricing stats just yet -- needless to say, it'll be more than the Yari.

Sony Remote Play support
Hmm, could this as a pilot for a PSP/Ericsson hybrid?
It means you'll be able to play PS1 games and access music and video off your PS3, like the PSP, only this is 3g equipped, so no need to find a wifi hotspot. AWESOME!
U know SE, if you make a slider phone, could you kindly put the camera on the other part so the lens will be protected when the phone is closed?
strange... the earlier sliders available on AT&T were like that, the 580 & 760. Sony wants them to look more like a point & shoot now when you use them, instead of being practical.
I think the upcoming w995 is the same way, with an exposed 8mp camera.
My K850 which I've used extensively as a camera has a pristine lens, with the only issue being dust under the lens, which could be solved easier than by a slide cover
There is no problem with not protecting optics of the phone. Its not DSLR with huge pieces of glass that cost huge amounts of money and can easily get damaged. Phone camera optics are almost indestructable (IMO) due to small size mostly.
On the other hand, its VERY uncomfortable to have to slide it out every time to take a picture - its much easier to keep it steady closed. For me.
Yari = Yawni. Seriously, 400€ for this? SE's gotta be kidding.
Aino looks quite nice though - although I'm not sure if anybody will care about it in "early Q4" - especially since both the Samsung S8300 Ultratouch and the LG GD900 Crystal match it spec for spec (and best it in some) are already available...
After my experience with the Eternity, Samsung can keep there "touchWiz" BS. And I have never been a fan of any LG pieces. But I'm glad people think they need a full touchscreen handset to impress their peers, that way I can hopefully pick up one of these for a reasonable $50 to $100 on contract, and not be gouged another $30 a mont for data.
I, sir, will be very interested in these when they launch, and hope Samsung and LG advertise like hell!
€400 is pretty reasonable when you consider that's what the C905 costs right now
aaaaaand, this is why SE sucks.
Super expensive feature phones. Awesome.
Show me where it says they're feature phones.
They are. Both use the next gen of SE's dumbphone platform.
Especially compared to N85, which has bigger and better screen (2.6" OLED), 3.5mm. Can't compare them though - SE will be at least 1.5 times more expensive when it starts selling. Having no advantages (gaming? smile shutter? any more jokes?) its a certain DOOM for SE.
I hope they realize they won't be able to keep whats left of their market share if they don't start dropping prices...
On the other hand I won't be too sad if SE goes bankrupt...
Aino is S60, don't know about Yari
The Yari is either very beautiful or very ugly. I can't decide.
Now if that Aino is capacitive...
Yari? gaming phone? What the hell happened to the w760i as a gaming phone? It was launched as the next big thing for sony mobile gaming, the two buttons on top -which I see the Yari has- were billed as "future game use." Well where are the games? We get a re-release of the same hardware with the same promises instead? And the same crappy JAVA games for $7 each?
And there is no USA support of PlayNow. I debranded my 760, to get rid of the AT&T crapware and menu system, but cant setup PlayNow with my US number. These may be Eurpoe only, given the hype in the post.
I hope they come to AT&T, as low cost contract phones, Lucily, the i(must_have_it_to_impress_everyone)phone overshadows alot of cool feature phones, making them affordable.
@Barbaric the w760 is over a year old. And the "gaming buttons" are the java "A/B game" buttons which are standardized and first appeared on an SE phone on the K800 in 2006
Is that a BT stereo headset included? Looks sweet. That, and a dock for both could mean using the phone as a display device / PMP more feasible.
"Included"
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA
HAHAHAHHAHAHA
HAHA
nice one!
Well............
Stranger things have happened.... Like... errr..... Uhm..... *runs away*
The Google translation says "Already included is a color-matched to the mobile phone Bluetooth headset" - I wouldn't be suprised if it were, they BT receiver looks matched for the phone.
It IS included.
@superhobo Sony Ericsson phones can include some fun stuff sometimes. Like i'm pretty sure one model did include bluetooth 'phones, and my C905 included a USB memory card reader
Yes, the Bluetooth headset is included. So is the dock for charging the phone/ headset and syncing.
I guess it IS included. Just looked it up on the SE site :p
nokia is fast loosing it's finnish roots, and sonyericsson adopts finnish names for their devices. what's the message there? are they trying to camouflage as finns and pretend that'll solve their problems.
don't these names look like a Swedish/Japanese hybrid, just like the actual company (even though their HQ is in London)?
@Viakenny: Jari (Yari) is a boy's name and Aino a girl's name in Finland.
well finland is located between sweden and japan, so it sort of makes sense to use finnish names as a compromise.
Yari is a kind of japanese halberd.
Aino can be a female Japanese name or the name of a group of natives in northern Japan.
It's likely these names have nothing to do with anything Nokia, or Finland related.
The day isn't perfect until some random plane chasing your ass!
Whats that weird slim device with the headphone lead coming out of it?
To me it looks a bit like a sony walkman but better shaped and with a sony ericsson logo on suck on it, or is it part of the dock?
stereo bluetooth adapter.
Aino isn't really a touchscreen model though - the TS is only used in the media and camera app.
So, in other words, have fun sliding it open when you want to answer a call, make a call, read an SMS, etc etc.
Really smart, SE!
It appeals to me very much. I used a Samsung Eternity for 3 weeks and couldn't stand it. I sent it back ann went back to my trusty old w760i. I hated being forced to use the TS all the time.
My hands get too dirty to be locked to a TS, but the slider is fine for me.
I think this is a cool feature phone... It doesn't need a bloated OS to make me happy, as long as it has a GOOD browser built in (or I just have to install opera mini) and wi-fi for in house use. The XMB on the 760 is neat, I like the fact it has a standalone media player/walkman software.
The Aino if you click on the link has a 12.1MP camera. That would be sweet to have on a phone. I need good MP for my work when on the road. Not sure that paying over $800 for it would make it worth it tho.
There are numerous more words that has the exact same spelling and pronunciation in Finnish and in Japanese but differ in meaning. See for Aina, Airi, Aki, Anni, Ari, Henna, Minna, Saku, kakka etc...
cant wait to see them in action
MSRP in Europe (Germany): 549 Euro

im goin to buy this even though itll take 2-3 months pay with my shitty job. hopefully i can get a deal with a contract. which company does this phone work with. i think at&t is mostly with sony right?
Is the screen on these phones OLED ? My wife and I have owned a few Sony Erickson phones in the past. we probably average 3 new phones a year between the two of use. I have always liked the feel and quality of them.
