Sony Ericsson Satio is Idou's final name, ships in October
It's been announced today that the Symbian-powered Idou unveiled at Mobile World Congress earlier this year will be coming to market as the "Satio." The full 640 x 350 3.5-inch touchscreen device features a whopping 12.1 megapixel camera, dual-band HSPA, microSD expansion (yes, microSD, not Memory Stick Micro), and a xenon flash. It'll be available in three colors -- black, silver, and bordeaux -- this October.

WOW...this has been a fine day...so many Breaking News.
What should have been under the breaking news of this phone is the manual focusing by means of touching the corresponding item on screen. The German translation is actually praising this feature and engadget do not even want to mention it?
Idou.... i want you to do me, cant wait for this phone , i wish if it had normal headphone jack though
@Ebzy: earlier sony ericsson touchscreen phones (running Symbian/OSE) have already done that, so it's nothing new
No, I think the only real "breaking news" feature of this phone would be the MicroSD support. Sony? Not using M$'s? Not even having an M$ slot?
Who cares about focusing. This is has the potential to change the fate of mankind.
Next breaking news: "Hell Freezes Over"
Thats a pretty sweet phone.....
That's no phone... it's a space station!
Lets hope its not as expensive as a space station ;)
Does it have 3.5mm?
looks pretty sweet
i should have a grand by that time. thats what the preorder price anyway.
FIRST to mention this will never hit a US carrier
Who gives a shit?
The extra money for an unlocked phone is well worth it not to be locked into a contract, and more importantly not have to put up with the garbage that carriers saddle branded phones with.
Debranding my last SE phone was far more hassle than the $200 difference in price was worth.
@jon
I got my w760a on contract, and had no problem debranding it. Its now a w760i, just like SE intended it to be. It took me about 15 minutes to do it. I can't imagine paying an extra $200 to debrand it.
ahaha
#1 get a contract with a Pre
#2 sell it on amazon/ebay
#3 buy a idou
#4 profit
jon,
What is the point of paying the full retail price on a phone if you are going to stay on the same network anyways. its not worth it. If the idou is like the experia, all it means is that it will be expensive and hardly anyone will have it in the US. Thats why people care about this. If you got the cash then whatever, you can help keep sony ericsson alive!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not a lot of people will pay $800+ for a phone. i dont care how nerdy they are.
Looks pretty sweet but did anyone happen to fact check the price on that puppy?
It cost around $1500.00 off contract and about $800.00 on contract.
The ipod touch will drop with a a camera and video this year for considerably less money. As for the 12.1 mega pix camera, overrated! Unless you have the optics, it ain't nothing but a big ass number!
Holy mother of God. Those specs. And it's SE so those 12.1MP aren't just for advertisement.
I just hope they're still around by October. Sell about 6 of those Satios and they'll be profiting again.
no mention of GPS, no GPS no buy :) I need one device for all these functions
@ AlFa RE: "... no mention of GPS, no GPS no buy..."
Look closer at the pictures that are posted, the body clearly says GPS / WiFi on the side.
Finally, SE use a MicroSD.... The M2 is really expensive... and nice all in one phone.
Cool looking product horrible name. Cybershot + phone Cyberphone, Cybershout, etc..
Finally gone with microSD. Only took them, what? Four years? *shakes head*
Proprietary anything in the tech world has an overwhelming propensity to fail miserably.
Still doesn't have a 3.5mm jack.
I would guess they're only going microSD for this handset as it's s60 (and any other s60 devices they come out with). I doubt they'd see themselves out of profit on their M2's etc for the sake of pleasing the masses
X1 has both a microSD and a 3.5mm jack. Altho the X1 and this phone are clearly after two very different types of smartphone users.
my k850i takes microsd.... not new.
My K850i takes microSD. My Sony DSC-V3 takes CompactFlash. The DSC-V3 came out in 2004.
I agree with Tarnation.
Should've come up with a better name to tout it's camera capabilities.
On another note, Its Symbian powered...meaning it will be able to install Symbian s60 5th gen apps right?
You obviously realise that ITS and IT'S have separate uses, unfortunately you have them backwards:
ITS is the possessive, and IT'S the contraction of IT IS
Yes except Nokia-developed S60v5 apps
Who gives a fuck about grammar on an online blog?
You do? Well.... GET A LIFE
Am I the only one that thought "Fellatio"?
Fellatio with your Satio. :D
Probably, because you're a fucktard.
no 3.5 mm headphone jack=fail
maybe it doesn't play mp3s :D
Couldn't agree more :(
Much to like on this one, but in the end, I'm not putting up with another FastPort-only phone. FastPort=blech.
Zune HD ripoff.
Sorry, had to say it M$ fanboys =)
Do you ever have anything intelligent to say?
haha iKurt. Considering all your comments sound like some tool who enjoys Apple products stuck up his ass, I sound like a Nobel Laureate by comparison.
craptacular
the front of it looks like crap with the slide cover.
the back looks pretty sweet tho.
no headphone jack = instant fail
Black, silver and Bordeaux? Sounds like the marketing department fell asleep about 1/3 of the way though the job.
This isn't a Cybershot phone (usually it's written somewhere on the body).
Not saying image quality will be bad, but don't expect TOO much.
See, this is why I don't want to see Sony Ericsson fail. Their phones are sexy and functional in a way that other phones can't be.
proprietary 2.5mm jack ... AWESOME!
Since when is 2.5mm proprietary? It's the most common style of wired headset connector on phones today.
It does actually have a 3.5 mm jack but it's not in the phone. All SE phones come with a small cable that goes into the multi-purpose port and offers the possibility to add any headphone and also server as Radio antena. I know it's not as good as a standard 3.5 mm jack but it does do the trick just fine.
No it doesn't. The Samsung Omnia had the same thing and it's just an unnecessary annoyance.
Not putting a 3.5mm jack on a media phone is inexcusable and extremely poor marketing. I for one will not be buying this phone because of this omission. The days of proprietary connectors need to die.
My SonyEricsson W760 died prematurely because this jack was exceptionally flimsy, and between charging, synching to PC, and connecting headphones, it didn't last beyond 4 months after phone's purchase.
I used to be a huge SE fan, but SE has just stopped delivering good lately. They're consistently late to the market, fit & finish quality is on the decline, support for NA 3G bands is abysmal, and the whole smartphone showboat has sailed off without them. SE's proprietary OS used to be nice and crisp and logical, but it aged way too fast.
X1 was a complete turd which SE hurried to forget about faster than it got out of the gate. I am sure they'll have a nice piece of an abandonware in Idou/Saito too, and the fact that it's S60 fp5 won't save it from being just proprietary enough to make it obsolete in 6 months or so. What's worse is the whole SE's approach (or lack of one) with regard to the high-end -- they keep repackaging Cybershot and Walkman brands with the old SEMC wares, dabble around the edges or smartphone market with X1 and Idou, while LG, Samsung, and HTC are innovating like mad on all fronts.
But it's a multifunction port. Which means it serves more than one purpose.
3.5mm does not allow for much flexibility.
The port allows for charging/data transfer to occur simultaneously, and also means they don't have to spoil the asthetics by adding a 3.5mm jack somewhere else.
@Reece
Or they could just add a micro-USB port like Nokia's have.
my Nokia has a headphone port, a charging port and an USB port and the aesthetics aren't that terrible.
and i can plug in any headphones or speakers whenever i want, i can also use any random USB cable i find lying around for data transfer, that's more important than aesthetics
@Gorilla800lbs
I feel like we're the same person. My W760i also went for repairs about 4 months after I got it, and it worked fine for 3 more months, but I recently just gave up on it, the battery lasts about 2 hours of music listening, that's if I can get the proprietary headphone jack to work. Syncing with a PC is also a lost dream, because the FastPort contacts (Even though have been replaced 3 months ago) just don't work.
So yeah, I share your opinion on SonyEricsson.
INCORRECT... SE phones don't all "come with" the adapter. The w580i included it, but not the w760a. It is a pain in the ass to use, its bulky, one of the locking clips on mine broke. I tried switching to a Bluetooth stereo set, and that sucked also..for one, you can't use the walkman EQ, the BT runs the battery down, and important to me- you cant use the FM radio without the adapter plugged in. Even plugging it in, it doesn't transmit the FM audio stream to the BT headset.
I'm looking forward to the W995, which is the same form factor, but with a 3.5 included. Google it for specs, looks great, hope it comes to AT&T soon.
Actually, the presence of the adapter depends on more than the model number. I bought a W810i, it came with the adapter. I accidentally put it in the washing machine 9 months later and had to buy a new one, and it didn't come with the adapter.
Not having 3.5mm is a deal breaker but I think Sony wants you throw another $100 for HBH-IS800 so you can enjoy the music for 4 hours then you have to recharge them again and again :))
Oh so awesome! i've been a huge fan of SE stuff. Can I kick the iphone habit for this? maybe!
I want that phone now
Is it series 60? Or just Symbian?
It sill probably be the new OS from the Open Symbian Foundation
With some processing power and Android, this would be a killer phone for SE. I'm not interested in Symbian though.
MSRP in Europe (Germany): 699€. SE must be kidding.
And it does NOT have Symbian^2, it "still" uses Symbian with s60 5th Edition.
Symbian^2 *is* S60 v5 FP1.
Indeed, I've to correct myself: (see laso: http://blog.symbian.org/2009/03/12/introducing-the-release-plan/).
Nice.
My phone has 15 megapixels and 34X optical zoom
I pity you - carrying such a brick must be a hard task...
Reallyyyyy?
I wish I could make my own freak smartphone. It'd have a 12.1 MP camera like this one, 720p video recording like the Omnia HD, 32 GB storage like the N97, slide out keyboard like the N97, Palm WebOS, and Snapdragon. That would be the absolute most bitchin phone in the universe. lol
Do you ever have anything intelligent to say? Frankly we don't care about what you wish for.
Interesting mix of specs. When Kurt says "we," rest assured he does not speak for me. Not sure who he is referring to actually, he probably doesn't have many friends with an attitude like that. his name implies he's an iPhone troll anyway, just looking to talk shit.
The manufacturers seem to care a lot about what you and many others wish for. That's the driving reason for new hardware and software releases.
google "cell phone reunion"
lol cell phone reunion is pretty funny. I recommend everyone to look at it.
Shame SE didn't slim the protective slide for the camera. There are a number of faults IMO. Shame as this phone had potential.
Let's hope Apple bring out a slighter smaller iPhone and I might just make the jump. Failing that, the Pre is looking more attractive by the day.
YES YES YES! Wicked phone!
wicked expensive phone - $1000 unlocked. Or more.
It's a sweet looking phone and its got some insane specs, the only problem is its so late to market nobody will really care. You have the palm pre, iphone 3gen and finally the n97 all will be released way before it and the OmniaHD is already out. SE falls down exactly where it always has its too late to market.
@Game_playa
You seem to care enough to make a crude, vitriolic attack upon my comment.
If you really didn't care, then it wouldn't bother you one way or the other.
5MP VS 12MP and flash, if you care about camera its no brainier
Sony Ericsson + microSD = Epic win!
why oh y SE do you do so many things right with a phone then ultimately screw it up by not adding ONE THING!!!!
seriously, do monkeys work in your R&D and marketing labs?????
your proprietary connectors SUCK soooo hard, its not even funny. they fail after 6 months and come loose when in peoples pockets and so on.
join the rest of the world and get micro-USB and a 3.5mm headphone jack FFS!!!!!!
great phone, great ideas, stupid managers for not forcing through microUSB and 3.5mm = no buy
no wonder your loosing money hand over fist!
I'm using two SE phones right now and use the Fastport to connect my headphones everyday since the past two years or so. No failures yet.
SE also has some of the best Bluetooth stereo headphones out there, so get one and kindly STFU.
Thanks.
Actually, now that I have a phone with a 3.5mm jack, I hate it. 3.5mm jacks are too large and tend to get pocket fluff in them. Not so with 2.5mm.
Hate a 3.5mm headphone jack because it is to large????? the adapters you use if you do not have a 3.5mm jack are massive, are you mad, this is the only phone I am Considering mainly because it has a xenon flash, but once again Sony Ericson do not live in the real world we ALL want a 3.5 mm jack, REDESIGN before lease date.
I love how people complain about unlocked phone prices. First of all, on a contract this phone will be cheap and eventually free. Second, by buying a $600 unlocked phone, I've already saved $400 in roaming data charges using a local SIM in Spain, on one single trip. Maybe you guys are poor and don't travel or can't afford the up-front charge, but in the end, unlocked phones are a good deal.
thats because the satio was designed by SEMJ. Typically they have the stupid proprietary port and microSD, so nothing of a surprise there for me
This October means more like December or Jan 2010 if their past history of releasing phones is any indication.
I'd totally drop my iPhone for this if it came with an App Community and an ATSC-M/H Tuner.
I have a BOSE in air for 100€ , where is the 3,5 mm Jack ?
Fail, No 3,5 mm Jack !!!!
Finaly a touchscreen smartphone with a Xenon FLASH, thank you, AT LAST.
This is the first true touchscreen smartphone camerphone, because it has a xenon flash.
here is the official full specs page for the Satio
http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/corporate/press/pressreleases/pressreleasedetails/satiopressreleasefinal-20090528
no need of 3.5mm jack it has wireless headphone even better than 3.5mm jack and its included in the box so its all good
Who is still using wired headphones when A2DP has been here for so long? I don't miss the days of ripping my ears off my head every time I get my headphone cord stuck on a door handle.
This phone will rule, especially as it is the first time WIFI has been added to a serious camera phone ie one with a xenon flash (which other manufacturers don't seem to have realised makes ALL the difference).
The 3.5" screen will also be great for video as it is the same size as the iPhone but on a smaller phone. I already convert my divx avis to 3GP format and play them on my K850i no problem, so the bigger screen will be a step up.

I WOULD LOVE TO BUY THIS PHONE IT SOUNDS SIMPLY SUPPER. BUT PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT,S BATTERY IT'S TOO LOW QUALITY FOR TODAY'S STANDARDS....
The reason manufacturers like samung, SE hasn't included 3.5mm jack in most of their products was intended if you unfortunately broke your adapter(which connects to your phone and on the other side 3.5mm) you would have no choice but to buy a new one.. same idea as sonyericsson memory stick... just bunch of greedy b*stard
