Think you'll have to wait until
June 6th for all the
Pre surprises to emerge? Think again. A breaking
Reuters report has just dropped one of the biggest cellular bombshells of the year:
Verizon Wireless, America's largest mobile operator, will soon be carrying Palm's Pre. Oh, that's not enough? No worries -- it'll also be selling a "new version of the touchscreen BlackBerry Storm," which is obviously the
Storm 2 that we've been toying around with. The report makes clear that both phones would be cleared for shipment in around six months, which certainly jibes with whispers we've heard about Sprint's
mighty short exclusivity period. The news came from the company's Lowell McAdam, the top executive for the venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone. To quote: "
Over the next six months or so you will see devices like Palm Pre and a second generation Storm." First Sprint, then
AT&T, and now Verizon? T-Mobile, where you at?
[Thanks, E]
Update: Seems Mr. McAdam continued on by noting that VZW would get the Palm Pre "
and a cousin." Hmm,
Eos, anyone?
Are you planning to switch to Sprint for the Pre?| I was, but now I'll just hold for the Verizon version. | 4741 (26.4%) |

I wasn't planning on switching, but good to know the Pre is coming to other carriers soon.
I've never understood the excitement over Verizon smartphones. Sprint has the same phones before Verizon, non-crippled, faster on average data at significantly lower data prices. My work phone is a Curve with AT&T, personal is Sprint HTC touch and I used to work for Verizon. They all drop calls. No one more than the other.
Unless you live in a small town somewhere Sprint has no coverage I can't understand why you would want to pay more for less to Verizon. At least with AT&T where they do have coverage I've found it to faster than Sprint (least in Houston) and you can use your phone if you travel internationally. That's reason to justify paying more with AT&T. Verizon... not so much.
Um can I just get the Blackberry 9630?
That's actually good news for Sprint Pre buyers. The lines will be smaller on opening day.
I am a happy Verizon customer for many years but this will be too late for me. In July it's iPhone and AT&T for me. :(
"Over the next six months or so you will see devices LIKE Palm Pre and a second generation Storm." There I capitalized the key word. Sorry to burst bubbles for you Verizon fanboys.
Yeah.. still getting one with Sprint. I'd rather have a non-crippled Pre and have my provider bought out than get a (likely) hardware inferior phone 6 months from now and have to pay higher fees.
As long is Verizon doesnt cripple the Pre, it'll be good.
I'm tired of depending on a carrier to carry the phones that I want. Palm, just sell the GSM version unlocked.
Life is good
i would have gotten the pre about 4 months.. too late.. hello g1
"Over the next six months or so you will see devices like Palm Pre and a second generation Storm," on the Verizon Wireless networks McAdam said.
---->>>LIKE
So does that mean we'll see a phone that's only similar to the second gen Storm? Dude was using "like" as "such as", or else he wouldn't have included the Storm.
I'm not gonna lie.... I actually gasped out loud when I read this.
I hope that gasp was at the people who did not properly read this speculative article.
Where's the option for:
"I wasn't going to switch for it, but I might get it now that it's coming to [insert carrier here]."
As usual, you forgot a box for 'I'll wait for the unlocked GSM version because I will NEVER switch to Sprint. Very satisfied with T-Mobile, with the exception of their selection of phones.
I'll happily buy a Pre on any network but sprint.
Pick me please
For all those thinking of staying put....6 months will be a Looooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggg time to watch us playing wit the Pre on Sprint.Dont know about yal but im a fiend for new tech and need it NOW.lol NOW is Sprint
Verizon has great coverage in my area, I still lament switching to ATT which sucks eggs. But holly crap their data plans where a rip off. Success on Verizon will mean the mother ship would need to wake up and smell the coffee burning and offer some similar packages to sprint on the low end. I would be shocked if that happens (happy, but shocked)
already got the iPhone with a contract Til 2011, so i'll pass on the Pre.
You idiots. The quote was "LIKE" the Palm Pre. No commitment to actually carry the Palm Pre. Verizon will not get that phone in six months. What have you ever seen out of Verizon that makes you think they will carry a good phone without compromising its capabilities? Nothing. Realize you have to compromise. "The network" or a good phone. The choice is yours.
this will not let at&t renew the iPhone exclusive deal, too risky for apple!
this makes sens.. Sprint is THE NOW NETWORK, not 6months later network lol
How about a 'The only thing that could stop me from getting the pre is the Pre being exclusive to sprint'
I don't understand why people bash on sprint.. You get free roaming so therefore you have access to all of verizons service (trust me I tend to roam on verizon from time to time. Sprint is cheaper for service, I just wish I could get a Pre with my Sero Service
Maybe by the time the Pre comes to Verizon it will have either 16GB onboard memory or support for a micro SD card. Just hope my Treo 700P can hold out a while longer. It is on DNR status.
This news creates tough choices: 1) ATT, Verizon, or Sprint (T-Mobile is a non-factor for smartphones due to its lack of a data network), and 2) iPhone or Palm Pre (or the Storm2 if you are a Blackberry addict, but I will not discuss the Storm2).
As Apple receives this news of the Palm Pre preparing to be available to all 3 major cell phone carriers in the near future, it seems inevitable that Apple will have to follow suit or else its market share will quickly diminish. Not only would Palm hurt Apple with a greater number smartphones in the market, but Palm would also have a larger market with which to develop tons of WebOS phone applications for the Palm Pre (resulting in lost revenues for Apple's App Store). I don't see Apple letting that happen for an extended period of time. Currently the iPhone contract with ATT ends in 2010, but ATT has been trying to talk with Apple to extend the contract to 2011. However, with this news of the Palm Pre eventually expanding to other carriers, do not be surprised if you hear in the next few days that Apple has formally turned down the opportunity to extend its exclusivity contract with ATT until 2011.
Consequently, it is reasonable to assume that both the iPhone and Palm Pre will be offered on all 3 major carriers by the end of 2010. So if you recently renewed your 2 year cell phone contract, take heart that next time around you will have the option of choosing between two great smartphones, iPhone or Palm Pre.
Most of you know the differences between the iPhone and the Palm Pre. However, one of the most important factors that often goes unmentioned is turn-by-turn navigation. Turn-by-turn navigation of course is combination of both the cell phone and the service your cell phone carrier provides. The two navigation services are Telenav (aka ATT Navigator or Sprint Navigation) and Verizon's VZ Navigator. VZ Navigator is just awful in terms of accuracy and reliability when compared to Telenav. So ideally, you will want Telenav on your iPhone or Palm Pre. Unlike with a Garmin or TomTom, Telenav updates itself daily and you don't have to deal with outdated maps and paying $100-$200 to get a major map update every year.
The giant Debbie Downer here for iPhone users is that while the Palm Pre should be ready to utilize Telenav using Sprint Navigation upon its release, the iPhone still (nearly 2 years later) is unable to use any kind of turn-by-turn navigation service. However, this could change with the development of iPhone 3.0 OS and if Apple announces (maybe at WWDC 2009) that they will now permit Telenav via ATT Navigator to work on the iPhone. If this does happen and the price for the whole data package is reasonable then I will get an iPhone and chuck my old Garmin. If this does not happen then I will likley get a Palm Pre due to the turn-by-turn navigation. I am not a big gamer, so I would not consider it a loss if the Palm Pre turns out to be less a gaming device, in terms of graphics, than the iPhone.
Apart from one or two users who fear the consequences of data-roaming abroad, all of my Treo users want to or have switched to the iPhone. Most loathed the 750 (in fairness, the most practical option at the time)
The Pre will need to deliver on hopes and units (none of that Nintendo Wii BS) to reverse the damage done by Palm's complacency.
Turn-by-turn will be a given in all phones sooner than later...
I anticipate a couple iPhone apps by July.
This rumor reeks of an Apple-generated attempt to hurt the release.
yay
Where's the option for 'I'm not even in the US'?
Will it be Verizon-ified with a tedious red interface or will it keep its Pre-ness?
Of course, the point is moot for my clients. They travel globally and while VZW is great at domestic 3G, AT&T seems best for travel abroad.
"T-Mobile, where you at?"
In last place.
Verizon is without a doubt the most reliable carrier in the U.S. Their coverage is unmatched by any other carrier and their customer service blows all other carriers (especially sprints) out of the water! I sold and worked with both of these carriers and I can say with complete honesty that if you are on the fence about switching to Sprint for the Pre... it will be well worth your wait to hold off until the Version is released. If you are concerned about GSM features then At&t is not a terrible choice either, however once again their customer service and actual cellular service is not as reliable as Verizons. Trust me I've worked with all of them in a sales environment!
