It's time for HTC's Touch Pro2 to join the ranks of every other modern phone in getting its own unboxing video. An enthusiastic PocketNow has the honors, and even goes so far as to utilize the infamous "smell test" to confirm it is in fact a genuine leather case included. Sized up to the original Touch Pro, it's got a more spread out keyboard, larger screen and thinner form factor -- all welcome additions, if you ask us. We can't imagine it being a deal breaker, but just so you know, the slide-out tilt doesn't go as extreme as its predecessor in that form factor, HTC's Titan. Living vicariously through video can be accomplished after the break -- it's not yet available stateside, but if you can't wait, there's always import.
For some reason, the phone just doesn't appeal to me. It looks very plasticky and cheap. Is this just me? Are the chromed edges on the front of the phone made from actual metal or just shiny plastic?
Looks like a great device, just wish it wasnt running Windows 95 - er - WinMo 6.1. Nuthin' worse than a Ferrari with a '73 pinto engine and suspension.
I love my tile. I just bought an 8 gig micro sd card today for 20 bucks so all I really need now are the accelerometers and I'd be set. And multitouch too, that'd be nice.
I don't know where that guy got his Tilt from, but my Tilt doesn't, uh, tilt, nearly as far as his does. In fact, mine doesn't tilt any further than the TP2, so for me, there wouldn't be any loss.
Looks so much nicer than the Tilt. The Tilt and the TP2 side by side look like two brothers: one is fat, rough and average, and the other is sleek, sexy and GQ.
But even so, I'm still going with v.3 of the iPhone when it comes out this summer. WinMo is growin' tired and needs a radical paradigm shift... WM7 won't present a radical enough change.
Agreed ! I had to pause the video and open my Tilt, because that angle looked wrong. Mine has the same angle as the Touch Pro 2, as well. Not sure what's up with this guy's Tilt !
I had to leave alltel because they suck, and Tmobile was so nice to me, they let me use an unlocked iPhone, and modified my contract so when the TP2 comes out, I dont have to pay retail for it! OMG I LOVE YOU TMOBILE!!!!!!!!!!!
But Seriously. The iPhone is not for business users. WINDOWS MOBILE ROCKS!!!!!!! ALSO
CAFFINEE IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
I'd disagree with that. We have a whole bunch of users at my work who have iPhones as their work cell phone. It does a great job from what I can tell with connecting to Exchange, haven't had any of them complain about it.
I have so much trouble typing on the iphone. Half of my texts don't make any sense. Apple should really just add a friggin' keyboard..
Anyways, from my first hand experience, I miss my old HTC Apache. When I go to the TP2, the only things I will miss from the iPhone are the wonderful touch screen, and the ringer mute switch. That is a very nice feature that I would love to see in other phones.
I support HTC adopting Android on all their phones.
By now, WinMo is becoming very fast the scourge OS of mobile phones. Android is the only one of the most modern and efficient operating systems for mobile phones that is not integrated with a particular hardware platform. In other words, other makers own both the OS and the hardware and integration is as follows:
Blackberry OS: with Blackberry phones Web OS : with the Pre Symbian: with Nokia smart phones OS X: with the iPhone/iPod Touch
This means that, while they are very modern and efficient, none of the operating systems above can be installed on 3rd party handsets like HTCs. That leaves Android in the unique position of being able to directly compete with WinMo.
HTC produces quality hardware and adopting Android as its OS foundation would enable it to gain the same inherent competitive advantages that come from being able to control both software and hardware sides. That is, being able to innovate and advance the platform, identify and correct problems, fix them faster, maintain higher standards of quality control and so on. There is an economic advantage as well since they wouldn't have to pay anyone a license fee to use Android. It would cost HTC less to produce handsets and they could use that money to improve on the aforementioned points.
Hold your horses. Not everyone like Google. I can't stand Google anything. I love my HTC Touch with WinMo. It works great for me. I can't wait for the Touch Pro 2. You really should try the WinMo 6.5 rom. It's hotness.
Those who stick to one side no matter the circumstances only do so out of ignorance. ATT WinMO != All WinMo. Sorry, but once you remove the carrier crap, Windows Mobile is rather fast, and it's only getting faster.
Face it, if you want a phone that can do everything you have to go with winmo (or perhaps S60), the others don't even come close, exept for when it comes to having nicer looking UI's.
The "pretty interface" argument is an old dead horse. In the Decade that WinMo has existed in its various iterations Microsoft has failed over and over again to innovate anything on it. Its system is pretty much garbage. IE Mobile is the worst browser of any mobile device, again, garbage. Its interface, garbage too.
In the past few years we've seen the rise of RIM that has come to dominate a very large part of the smartphone market because they're not asleep at the wheel. Blackberry OS is far superior to WinMo as seen by market adoption. Following their wild success, Apple came in with the iPhone, again, a far superior OS platform to WinMo. Case in point, in 8 months of the Apple App store's existence, it surpassed the number of WinMo apps that took 10 years to accumulate. An who wants to use a 10-year old app.
Now Android's efficient and very modern set of APIs have the perfect chance to clean house and trash junky old WinMo to become the preferred platform of choice for 3rd party handset manufacturers.
I am not sure why you wish HTC choose Android as their primary OS. HTC has a loyal WinMo fanbase which is growing. No one is saying that they shouldn't create Android phones but to go totally Android is a dream you are having and you need to wake up.
There are costs involved with android - maybe not as much as winmo but there are cost none the less. Also how do companies make major changes or enhancements beyond Google's and then patent these and protect intellectual property when certain features are likely synced back to Google because they use GIT.
Its more complicated then you think and that is why there has been a slow up take and roll out of phones. It harder to create competitive stand out devices as phones are now more about the software than hardware. So HTC creates competitive winmo devices as they have TouchFlo3D and until they can do this with android and suitably protect it then winmo will be their main focus.
Are you kidding me here? Unboxing an HTC touch? How about more Apple/iphone news engadget? What are you a bunch of HTC fanbois now? I have an iphone and it blows away any HTC POS out there. Yes, you read it, sorry if I called you out on your POS HTC in your pocket. I know you bought one because you have a PC and think it is sooooo cool to have a WinMo phone in yer jeans.....sorry, but it ain't gonna get you laid any time soon. My iphone, however, is a chick magnet. Chicks practically give me a lapdance at Starbucks just to hold it. Yeah, I get free Wifi at Starbucks too peasants.
Im running 6.5 with touch flow 3d 2 on my TP1, And its NOT slow... Theres been massive improvments in responce time with 6.5, I tryed my mums 6.1 Tmobile Diamon and i was sickened how slow it is...
Really the main speed issues are due to the branded firmware installed. Not Base OS and HTC stuff...
And anyone who gets a winmob phone knows that XDA DEV is the place to be when researching roms and firmware...
Theres plenty of custom roms being built there.
And in many cases there much better than the ones officaly released through the contract providers.
As for Android. Its just another Iphone OS to me... Remote uninstalling remote locking. Never good in my book.
And while MS is building market place for mobile with DRMed software. Theres nothing stopping you from installing software the old fassioned way.
I'm a fan of the iPhone.. I like the N97 all except for its keyboard.. I typically don't even like physical keyboards.. But this phone looks fuckin amazing.
I think the Diamond 2 is more attractive because I love the silver on the front but the Touch Pro 2's big screen is a huge turn-on.. haha..
And like I said I DON'T like physical keyboards but that has got to be the best keyboard I've ever seen on a cellphone. I hope HTC continues to make phones with keyboards like this...
My only problem.... Schiller, when are we going to get capacitive WinMo phones? It's not like I want WinMo.. but I'd like to use this phone alongside my iPhone 3G and I just can't because it's pressure sensitive.. Used my friend's touch diamond.. It's a no-go for me.
Really? I think pretty much everyone that reads Engadget has an idea of what the iPhone can and can not do. Personally, I'd rather see less iPhone comparisons.
what the hell did he do to his tilt? mine doesn't nearly that far! it only goes as far as the TP2. as for the "interesting," i think it's cool how you gotta give it that extra "push" to tilt the screen; it might stop some people from tilting it while trying to close it. man this video just made me want it even more. it's gonna come down to this or firestone (depending when it comes out), at&t better not fuck up the colors.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.

Exactly my thoughts. I support HTC adopting Android on all their phones.
I love my tile. I just bought an 8 gig micro sd card today for 20 bucks so all I really need now are the accelerometers and I'd be set. And multitouch too, that'd be nice.
lol... I love tile... did I just look around the room and say I loved the first thing I saw? Yes I did. I love my TILT!
@Wii60 Quit bitching about 3.5mm headphone jack and use a Bluetooth headset. Shite!
Some of us would rather have decent battery life and good sound quality.
This idiot is talking about good sound quality coming out of a cellphone. LOL!
Okay, "passable" then. I'm not an audiophile, I buy my headphones at the drugstore, but I still think Bluetooth headphones sound like crap.
I don't know where that guy got his Tilt from, but my Tilt doesn't, uh, tilt, nearly as far as his does. In fact, mine doesn't tilt any further than the TP2, so for me, there wouldn't be any loss.

Did you mean the HTC Kaiser? Aka Tytn 2? The HTC Titan was the Sprint Mogul, which didn't tilt at all.

I strongly believe WinMo in any flavor is garbage.
I strongly believe you're an ignorant fool.

Right. Just like how you strongly side with WinMo only.

@FoxKenji ok if you say so, .... but please name one phone running android, os x, or something that can do all the things nokia N97 or TP2 can.
I am not sure why you wish HTC choose Android as their primary OS. HTC has a loyal WinMo fanbase which is growing. No one is saying that they shouldn't create Android phones but to go totally Android is a dream you are having and you need to wake up.

Sprint Relase? Price? Yay for the video thoguh!! THanks.
i would probably get this phone, but i cannot deal with no
3.5 mm headphone jack.
Its just wayy too annoying to not be able to plug in my earbuds at a moments notice if i want to listen to music without some ridiculous adapter.

I can't help to hear the sound of dissapointment every time he would say "interesting" especially when he would mention the tilt on the screen.
looks neat. if it comes out for verizon I might consider one. I am holding out at the moment from upgrading t something new.
Anyone else wish he would have put it side-by-side with an iPhone? That's the one comparison I think most people want to see.
Really? I think pretty much everyone that reads Engadget has an idea of what the iPhone can and can not do. Personally, I'd rather see less iPhone comparisons.
"ITS A BIG DEVICE"
God this video sucks.
