Live Sky TV coming to Xbox 360 in UK and Ireland, hooligan avatars to follow
US Americans, go ahead and enjoy your Netflix streaming over your Xbox 360, Brits are about to land a deal that'll put live football, TV, and films over Microsoft's broadband-enabled console -- a first live television service for Xbox 360 anywhere. Beginning in Autumn, Xbox Live subscribers in the UK and Ireland will gain access to Sky's Sky Player service that includes subscription-based live, on-demand, and pay-per-view access to your favorite shows without the need for an additional set-top-box or satellite dish. Unfortunately, specifics like prices and channel line-up have not been announced, though content is expected to be similar to the Sky Player service already available on Macs and PCs. Of interest, Xbox Live users will be able to watch sporting content together virtually and sling insults and taunts at one-another via avatars or virtual personas. Something that will lead to slurring songs in a fit of semi-social inebriation or fisticuffs, depending on the score.

Great, so can we have this on all consoles instead of just the Xbox 360?
Maybe its just me, but as a consumer (not a fanboy) i refuse to buy the 360 because its a flawed piece of kit. Get this going on the PS3 or Wii and they might have us subscribed to Sky again :)
Well, Go View on the PSP is powered by Sky...so something like this will probably come to PS3 in time given Sony and Sky are already working together.
WAS a flawed piece of kit. The reliability of newer units is on par with the other consoles.
Agreeing with Aaron here... Plus, you can get 2, maybe 3, Xbox 360s for the price of a PS3, as well as the arcade version for less than a Wii.
That doesn't change the fact that buying a Wii or PS3 if a much safer choice in peoples minds.
I own an Xbox, and maybe it's just me, but here in Ireland it seems that there is a much higher PS3 uptake than Xbox uptake. For exapmle, in my group of closest friends, 7 have a S3, 2 including me have an Xbox and 2 don't have either. Everyone has a wii except me.
It seems that PS3 would have been a better console to launch first on, or at least launch simultaneously. Still, I'm happy that I've got it!
(Fun fact: PS2 had the second largest following per capita in Ireland, after Japan)
I'm with Aaronage on this one. Despite the 360 being OK now (apparently) and Microsoft offering a reasonable warranty, I absolutely refuse to buy one explicitly because of the shenanigans that went on prior to now. Doing so effectively justifies what Microsoft did and I won't do that as a point of principle. I hope that the successor to the 360 expunges this sorry tale and, if so, then I'd be quite happy to buy that.
Well, if you enjoy overpriced, and limited game titles.. why don't you just download skyplayer for the PC (Assuming you have a sky subscription... but if you don't.. hey, you had enough spare cash to blow on a PS3! you can afford it!!!)
@Kelmon
that's like saying "i'm not going to buy a sony console again, because of the crazily high dvd drive failure rate of the ps2". Sure, some people will agree, but to do so would be childish, and more than a little bit stupid. its fine if you want to deprive yourself of the best console this generation (cheapest, graphical quality, online experience, most innovative), but please don't come here preaching your crazy beliefs like some radicalised christian.
as for the the RROD issue. at least microsoft had the decency to offer free 3 year warranty on that issue, which is unprecedented, and far better than any level of customer support sony has offered on any of their products - let alone consoles. Sadly, a friend had his xbox die to this a few weeks back.. he had a NEW console from microsoft support in his hands within a week.. that's good service in my book.
No offence jrb, most of your arguments are spot on, but the PS3 had the best "graphical quality" and the Xbox is least innovative of all the consoles, where did Xbox innovate?
@jrb
If you read my comment correctly then you'll have noted that I said that I would consider future Microsoft products so you'd need to amend your statement to say "i'm not going to buy a sony ps2 console again, because of the crazily high dvd drive failure rate of the ps2", which I am sure everyone would agree is quite a reasonable position. The problem here is that you are an idiot, which is not a term that I throw around lightly but in your case you can wear the award with pride. Having praised Microsoft for giving a longer warranty (only after public pressure, I should note) you then go on to say that your friend's 360 died and took a week to be replaced and you still think that this is OK. Not only is that a bad product (it's not even a mechanical failure) but you think that it is OK to have to wait a week for a replacement? If you are prepared to put up with that sort of thing then you only have yourself to blame if the next 360 suffers the same sort of problems.
Customers should not have to expect to claim on a warranty.
It's almost as if every 360-hater pretends the YLOD for the PS3 does not exist.
At least Microsoft takes care of you, for free, in less than 2 weeks.
I can imagine that knowing that Microsoft will send you a new console in 2 weeks is very comforting while you sit around, twiddling your thumbs. The point is that failures like this should not be tolerated at all and I find it unbelievable that so many people seem to think that it's OK. If Sony or anyone else has problems like this with their products on any scale worth knowing about then consumers should boycott their products until they make them to a higher quality. People should vote with their wallets. This isn't necessarily an anti-Microsoft statement - it's an anti-crap statement and a desire for companies to perform better QA rather than just shoving stuff out the door.
Sorry, I feel as though I'm almost foaming at the mouth in general annoyance...
Kelmon hits the nail on the head :)
Sure they have a good warranty, but that's not the point. The failures shouldn't have been so widespread in the first place.
And i don't believe for a second that the fault has been completely eradicated. I still hear mates groaning about sending off their consoles, brand new replacement consoles. It's quite hilarious really, people almost get excited when they get one of the many errors this console has. It's like a competition, whoever has had to send off their console the most wins!
So this time round I'm not touching the xbox, hell the Wii and PS3 could go outta production and i wouldn't buy it. It's a matter of principle not fanboy favouritism :)
ScrapMaker:
MS doesn't "take care of you". They only fix RRoD-type failures for 3 years. Other failures, like optical drives, are not covered. Anything after 3 years, not covered. I've had to pay to fix both my PS3 and 360 (both are near first day units).
What's the YLOD?
I've seen PS3s where the optical drive stops reading discs. I've seen PS3s where the power supply just died and it didn't turn on. Come to think of it, I've seen a PS3 where the display was littered with green dots and then it would crash (that was under warranty). But never a yellow light of death. What is it?
Sure there was a lot of hardware failures, but at least they have been taken care of and so have the customers. Considering this is only the 2nd version of the console, i think they have done a very well job. So good in fact they are killing the PS3 in sales. They are below Nintendo in sells, but are higher in replay than the WII and PS3. This is just another step in Microsoft's plan to make the 360 into the console you can do everything with. If this comes to America, you will now able to play games of course, stream netflix movies, access the zune marketplace, and now watch tv all in one console. Considering the basic netflix player is about $100, and the Xbox arcade is on $200, i think that is a great deal. One thing the Wii and PS3 don't have is the great and easy to use interface that the 360 and the Zune have.
Gizmodo has better info stating that Hulu is coming to the 360.
PS3 has PlayTV...
@ Kelmon
I'm regretfully going to have to point out how rude it is of you to call someone an idiot over the internet, over a debate. You clearly had a point to make, but it certainly had NO superiority over his.
Your point is right from a 'perfect' standpoint. However, if you stand by that, would you buy a product from a company who was cocky enough NOT to provide you with a warranty? Microsoft are providing the extended warranty because they are assuring the consumers the service and quality is within Microsoft. For that reason alone, everybody's wallets are safe with an Xbox 360.
So is the service offered over the internet somehow, or are they going to develop some sort of TV tuner adapter for the Xbox? Or do you guys across the pond get TV by something other than coaxial cables?
-tolazytogoogle
Yes its internet based, Sky Anytime is a website where you put your subscriber info in and you can stream and download like a PVR of sorts.
We receive Sky via a satalite dish and coaxial cable in the UK but It will likely be internet based like the SkyPlayer.
Damn, I wish they'd do it like that over here. It can't be too hard to stream a TV station over the internet.
We can also stream Sky and BBC to our mobiles too. Providing you're on a 3g/wifi connection that is.
I'm so loving this... I'm not a Sky customer at the moment, but I just might sign up when this launches and maybe buy an Xbox for every TV in the house!
then you can watch sky in everyroom.....you wont be able to hear it, but your see it lol
Don't get to exited, it will be expensive. It has so far proved a tad unreliable and not fully functioned.
Nice idea but lets see a bit more detail before we get exited, and how am I going to hear the sky tv with the helicopter taking off in the background.
I AM a Sky Customer and a 360 owner, so I am particulaly excited by this. I already resolved the issue with the noise by stashing the console away in the computer room, plus since I had it replaced following an RRoD, its much quieter. I've never been able to get Sky Anytime working on the PC, so the opportunity to have it on the 360 fills me with confidence.
Now I want to watch iPlayer programmes on it, without fiddly work arounds - I've not bothered sorting it for the Wii after I heard how bad it was.
You can already watch iplayer programs on the 360 without a fiddly work-around.
I hope the BBC follow suit and put the iPlayer on Xbox 360 too -- it's been a while since the head of iPlayer posted on his blog saying that he wanted to support consoles and Apple TV as well as PC/Mac/Cable.
Yeah that would be SWEET. When they say Sky TV, that means all the movies and stuff that comes with it too?
Thats excellent.. Microsoft are really pushing their influence this year
That would be pretty much awesome.
Problem is Wii n PS3 use the browsers to get Iplayer, they have slightly tweaked version to suit using a TV n controller instead of monitor n mouse, but the browser is something the 360 doesn't yet(E3 may bring one) have, so Iplayer would require a major bit of work on BBC's part to get on 360. other two cases is a tweak to their website which is already set up.
Sky get a monthly subscription so can justify the cost of coding the Skyplayer for 360.
This is a great idea. So long as its not sh1te. Sky are notorious for offering great packages with pain in the arse extra stipulations. The xBox may do away with the 'need' to have a set top box but I'd be very surprised if Sky offered a specific xBox package and didn't require you to purchase one anyway. This is just an extra not an alternative, which makes business sense, but its lame.
Its gonna have to be one heck of a deal to make me want to give up my Sky+ HD.
SkyPlayer already lets you watch Sky programs without a Sky subscription - you pay for what you want to watch via online, without needing a Sky Box, satellite dish, or any of that gubbins. I would imagine that the 360 version would be roughyl comparable in terms of price/content, otherwise folk would just use SkyPlayer on their PCs instead.
I'm waiting to see if they extend the channel line-up - the current Entertainment pack for SkyPlayer has maybe two channels total I'd watch, and it's a mandatory requirement to buy it and it just ain't worth £15/month. Or if they let you subscribe to just the Movies channels. That I WOULD pay for.
Still wish NetFlix would come over here though - Sky's back catalogue is restricted to around 500 on-demand movies at a time, compared to the thousands NetFlix has.
by live football, i assume this means the real football that the players actually play with the foot 100% of the whole 90 minutes.....yes? not the other 1% foot and 90% break your neck where tv networks serve u zillions of expensive ads at your unwilling will to watch them despite paying your month fee to watch strictly tv programs that you signed up for..
Hey! I mean, I agree with you on that last part, but still, hey! Football and football are both fun to play and watch. Sure, football is slightly less interesting than football, but that doesn't mean that football isn't a good sport. Football has its pros and cons, as does football, so if you're going to make fun of football, then watch out, 'cause you're going to have a lot of football fans on your ass.
The fundamental problem with American Football is simply that it takes too long and the amount of play relative to the length of the game is too little. Rugby is a better choice, in my opinion, simply because there is more actual play and less time spent having a chat or changing teams.
Loud American commentators also don't help me watch American Football but you can at least turn the volume down.
Rugby is definitely far far superior...as well as the fact that the players wear no padding whatsoever its just a better game in general.
As popular as soccer is in Europe it is equally unpopular in the US. And vice versa with the NFL. Although how come the Super Bowl is still watched by so many people across the world?
It's just the way it is, soccer will never be interested because of the lack of action and scoring. Yes they play the entire time the clock is running but watching a ball go back and forth across a field the size of Kansas is not enough to keep Americans attention.
No sense in tying to compare the two sports. We'll never see eye to eye on this. To each his own I guess.
/clustermindfuck
Arshavin FTW!
Indeed, love his honesty of disagreeing with the referee's penalty decision. Wenger should of got him from the start of the season and they could won a trophy then.
Damn him, he couldn't let us have our points.
We'll be able to watch Burnley playing live...
Good thing for European XBox owners. Microsoft really are the leading manufacturer in advancing and developing new media options for their console and new games. The console has been out a year longer but at this point has a more promising life span than the PS3 and Wii. What's happened to the Wii lately? The best game for it has been Wii Sports or Mario Kart. And the PS3 is already being replaced by a smaller version, despite having few exclusive titles and has anyone ever found Home useful or even on a games console, god forbid, fun..?
leading into new media eh?
Wii n PS3 have had Iplayer for shy of a year, and the browsers open it up to a ton of content online, 360'll be the only console not able to watch E3 this year.
As for your lifespan are we talking the 360 brand or 360 consoles, cos the consoles noway live out past PS3 and defiantly not the semi-indestructible Wii. We've dropped the Wii n SSBB continues playing throughout, knocked the 360 and well FIFA n GH:World Tour both needed a trip to the disc cleaners(and FiFA got replaced)
Home is also getting pretty decent, and a decent money spinner for Sony, so I wouldn't be surprised if MS announce there own version at E3.
Also the Ps3 officially has more exclusives than the 360, though by a small amount. but thankfully many studios are going multi-plat, but you strike me as the kind of person who doesn't want to share games.

No one has mentioned HD yet - so I will ... I can't have Sky as I practically live in a forest so it's not possible to get a dish working around the trees (unless I get a huge one) but I was really only interested in the HD content anyway and that leads me to a point about using this service over a broadband connection.
If Sky do stream HD content it would great but I would still have issues with my provider as Virgin Media has a throttling mechanism that they implement under their "fair use policy" Basically if you "download" over 4GB in a 24 hour period you are throttled by 75% so a 10Mb line is reduced to 2.5Mb for the remainder of the 24 hour period. I argued the point that if I had paid for something like Apple TV or now something like this Sky service I would be unable to use it because Virgin Media would not give the bandwidth needed!?
They had no answers but did bump me up to 20Mb for only a few pounds extra. "of course Sir - you could sign up or our V+ HD box which would give you a great selection of HD content" - I replied "oh - so you would run another line into the house for that then?" - "no Sir ... it comes down the same cable" SO WHY THE F*CK CAN I NOT USE APPLE TV!?!? etc etc
Anyway - I would love to have some HD content streaming over the internet but realistically if that means "downloading" over 4GB then it doesn't look good if the service providers will not allow it!?
I'm sorry - I appear to have been raving on a bit there.
Cheers.
Sounds like pretty reasonable raving to me. You go right on with it, sir.
+1
You're exactly right. Virgin Media is effectively maintaining a monopoly on the transmission of HD video content on their cable network. Their bandwidth limits make it impossible to download or stream HD video, unless it's part of their V+ package.
what are you talking about virgin has 1 half day he channel (BBC) and a couple of on demands, they are useless at hd not a monopoly
@ Bob
Maybe you're not understanding this right:
I can sign up for Virgin Media's V+ HD service but I can't use the same cable to stream/download over 4GB in a 24 hour period!?
That sounds like monopolising to me!?
Cheers.
Unless your on their 50MB service like me :)
Are you saying that you don't get throttled if you're on a 50Mb line?
Remember - you wouldn't necessarily know if you were unless you were downloading a lot. Even on my 20Mb line I don't always get the full bandwidth!?
This is a good speed testing site:
http://speedtest.net/ - and it's endorsed by Virgin Media as a why to prove their incompetence!?
Cheers
There isnt any throttling on the 50meg yet.
No throttling what so ever
I use a lot of Usenet servers and my connection always hovers between 45 - 50Mbit

Engadget. Please dont ever mention the Irish under the term "Brits" ever again.
...but nowadays it's politically incorrect to split the Brits into the potato-haves and the potato-have-nots.
agreed mr griffen
And while we are on that subject, what on earth is a "US American"?
Lucky you!
My next move would be to get them to upgrade me to 50Mb for no extra cost but a friend of mine has just said that I should write to them and copy in the ombudsman (or whoever police's these things)
Cheers.
You'll be lucky to get 50MB for nothing.
I've been with VM/NTL since the early days and it still cost me £50 to upgrade, i didnt mind though because they provide a new modem and a Netgear WNR2000 Router.
The installer also kindly drilled me some holes so i could run ethernet cables for streaming :)
Steve
Well, hopefully the BBC channels will stream for free as the BBC stream them for free live over the internet anyway. Not too bothered about the other channels we may or may not get.
Wait so it's soccer....no thanks I'll stick with netflix here in America and the NFL on Sundays.
No it's FOOTBALL as in a game you play with a ball and your feet.
Not a game where you run 10 yards, get a bit gay and then have a five minute rest before you do it all again, while managing to rarely use your feet but still having the nerve to call it Football :/
Amazing... just amazing stevengreen, I wish I could paypal you money right now.
ROTFL.
http://www.eatliver.com/img/2009/3849.jpg
Please view that pic before ever calling football 'soccer'
I'll start calling soccer football when Brits stop calling expressways motorways. Or guardrail "armco". Or plexiglass "perspex".
Different countries have different words for things. Using the correct word for the correct country makes sense. Telling someone else they are using the wrong word when it's the correct word for their country is just stupid.
Good old Arsenal :)
Hopefully we have a better season next year.
I don't get why this is only available in the UK / Ireland... I'd love to have Sky Sports in America! I could watch all of my Arsenal matches!... I wonder if there will be a way to trick it...
Guessing the BT Vision/Xbox tie-up is still a long way off then...
Hope Sony and Sky are working together for the PS3. They'll be missing a great opportunity if they're not.
I'm gettin the feeling this is a preview something similar they might unveil at E3 for us North American folks... i hope its true cause that picture looks alot like our would be version of "Playstation Home"... hopefully if this is a prep for that it comes off more organic and not like a cheap knock-off
I don't think it will be availiable in the US due to licensing from the English FA
Well, you never know. I'm living in Belgium and the local cable company (Telenet) shows the Premiership (plus the other major European leagues and the Belgian one) matches live on their subscription sports channels. The FA clearly doesn't mind licensing the games for broadcast outside the UK but whether anyone in the US will pony-up the cash remains to be seen.
Normally I wouldn't bother subscribing to a TV channel but since the BBC stopped showing the International and FA Cup matches, PRIME Sports is the only way for me to watch any matches from home without shelling out for a dish to pickup Sky.
@ The Rod
My thought exactly that Kid came into Arsenal and light up the place on that game..can you freaking believe it..4 goal all by himself .too bad we end up with a Tie(Draw). Oh well theres always next Season :-D.
Correct me if im wrong but does sky TV multicast all over the world? . Also does anybody know if Sky tv has an app for the ipod Touch?..I own a Wii and Xbox 360 so if it comes to the states im getting it...so i can watch my Arsenal Gunners :-D..ooh and the NFL is not slow or borring theres always something happening..Go Pats
@Kelmon
We can only watch the EPL on Sansata Sports the rest can be watch on Goal tv,Fox sport and ESPN. Sansata sport is live stream from England but is part of Time warner cable as of now but in a couple of months Verizon Fios will get it...GO FIOS GO!!
This is a great idea. but there are so many obstacles that could possibly stand in the way of this coming to fruition. I, for one, just hope that this doesn't go the same way as the whole 'xbox meets bt vision' situation last year, because quite frankly, that pissed me right off. I mean, BT is probably the most commonly used isp in the uk, right? and the 360 is also very popular here too. So it goes without saying that a high percentage of customers that had both these products did consider the BT vision path for TV. So out of those people who considered it, there is a percentage of them that signed up to BT Vision purely on the basis that this marriage of TV and gaming would work (at least within the year). I am one of those people, and i gotta say, i feel like i was lead down the garden path just to get me to sign up to BT Vision, as if the 360 was some sort of carrot on a stick to draw me into this new, largely untested TV service. Weeks and months passed with no news. Not even a blog update or anything really in terms of a step forward to delivering this product. My contract with BT Vision expired, and without hestitaion I cancelled it basically because it was rubbish, and moved to Sky. So there's me with my new Sky+ HD box, resigned to the fact that I had made a rash purchasing decision involving BT Vision. Then Sky get in bed with MS with this. God, i really can't take much more of this, where the big companies show off their toys in front of us, and then tell us to wait, and if we're nice, we might get a chance to play with these freakin things.
I'm really sorry for the wall of text. I don't comment often, but this one, i just had to take up arms against.
So is it coming to Britain or Britain and the Republic of Ireland?
that does look a lot like the EA Sports Center in HOME.
especialy when you look out over the railing and see the football, baseball, soccer, hockey stadiums, and boxing ring.
If you can 'pay as you view' Premier League matches, I'll do that rather than upgrade my package to £33/month and end up with a lot of sports I don't want to watch.
@kelmon
either agree, or disagree.
don't agree that the warranty microsoft offer is far and above better than any other console manufacturer has ever given, but then disagree that it's bad that when invoked said warranty is not worth the paper it's written on. I think we all agree that any RROD is a bad thing, but microsoft are dealing with it way better than - as my example pointed out - sony did when they had a similar level of failures.
i'd gladly take your idiot award, but in this case i think it'd look more at home on you.
The broadband fair use policy is implemented so 'YOU' personally don't monopolise the exchange from other customers. It also prioritises Virgin media above and beyond Broadband usage. The reason for that being, is broadband is considered a luxury. 'Satellite' or 'cable' may also be put in that category, but access to public TV is a right, more specifically BBC (Who you effectively pay your TV Licence to).
Your broadband usage is also very much determined on how your local telephone exchange operates. If your in a 'looped' exchange, you can guarantee the 'fair usage policy' is alot more strict, also your more likely to be held to a download monthly limit. Your speed in these exchanges is also greatly reduced during busy times. Thus, it wouldn't be a sensible choice for those in these area's to get Sky via Xbox live. I wouldn't like to watch a game of football with frequent reload screens and tittering sound. Those who have 'cable' or in an 'unlooped' area would have a lot more use to this.
I'd hate to imagine the costs that will be implicated to users of this server. As a customer of Sky, I now pay £47.50 a month (Calculated @ 17.5% VAT), which gives me movies, sports and all other sky channels. I wouldn't imagine Sky making this a cheap alternative to watch what you want, otherwise they'd be losing customers like me. For this reason alone, I wouldn't be entirely surprised @ a monthly fee on top of a PPV price. Don't you think this sounds a bit like BTVision, but more complicated?
Plus, if your Xbox breaks down, who do you cancel your Sky subscription with? A long frustrating 'robot' from Xbox helpdesk... or a 45 minute queue to get through to Sky? To me, this sounds a bit like another thoughtless launch from both companies. I don't need to say much about both the launch of Sky HD and early releases of the Xbox 360 to scream fear in my wallet and head.

I have both consoles and tbh they both have there ups and downs, like ps3 hasnt got a large game selection where the xbox has, but ive had 4 xbox's in 3 years after RROD but only had my ps3 go wrong once. Ive also red the comments about xbox customer service on returning consoles about it taking a week - 2 weeks, when my ps3 blu ray drive broken i rang playstation and they organised my console to be picked up from my house and swap it for a new one at my front door and this was only 2 days after I rang so tbh i have found from personal experience that sonys customer service is better.
Anyway back to the point i think that the sky player will be awesome and i cant wait for it. (as long as they dont start charging stupid money for it)
well everybody seems to be hating Xbox 360 for some unkown reason the PS3 is not a console made for a gamer the reason why i say this is because mainly its contoller it is not made for your hand at all anyway PS3 have just as many problems as xbox its just that xbox knows how to help its coustermers
and i dont understand why anybody with a ps3 is commenting on this because its obvious that xbox is the FUTER OF GAMING we got project natel coming we got facebook and twitter coming AND SKY sooo suck on that you PS3 lovers
