Quo Computer set to open Mac clone shop in California

Mac clone maker Psystar may have finally ran up against a wall, but it looks like its tale hasn't dissuaded upstart Quo Computer, which is now planning to open a retail store in the Los Angeles area that'll sell some as yet unspecified Mac clones. While that'll apparently be a relatively small operation initially, the company's founder, Rashantha De Silva, does seems to have some fairly grand plans for it, with him telling CNET News that they are "trying to stay as close to Apple as we can with our products," and that he hopes Apple "sees the value in what we are doing." Of course, that's about as likely to happen as Woz staying awake during a Palm talk, and De Silva isn't completely unrealistic about the situation, adding that they'll "probably" get sued. Nevertheless, the store is supposedly set to open on June 1st, and the company is apparently aiming to have pricing start at less than $900.

In the Mac world there is Crossover.com that allows the use of Windows apps in OS X without installing Windows.
In the Linux world there is Wine. (Crossover is actually based on Wine.)
Why dont these compaines just sell the hardware preconfigered and through in a "free" copy of OSX that would be legal shorly!
I dont think that apple could say they you can install osx on what you like but we wont support it at least not in the EU. they would have to provide support for anthing they say it can be run on.
Man this article made be go "what the fuck". Seriously, Psystar can't do it so WHY should these guys think they are different? Sheesh.
Apple-"think different" comes to mind
fuck apple
Fuck Microsoft
The problem here is that these clone companies are coming out one at a time what we need is to have several come out all at once. That may force apple's hand to open up to competition. (and maybe knock Steve Jobs off his high horse)
doesn't matter. 20 coming out at once is just going to be 5 more minutes to send off 19 more 'cease and desist' letters. cause Apple still has the courts on its side etc.
You're either a troll or you have a severe case of ignorance.
The Apple business model and strategy is completely different than the Microsoft business strategy. Apple supports hardware sales by developing software for their hardware. Their market are consumers. Microsoft makes money by developing software to run on 3rd party hardware. Their market are OEMs and corporations.
There is no "opening up to competition" because Apple does not have any monopolies. Apple owns both sides of the coin, hardware and software. They do not block the installation of 3rd party operating systems in their Macs. Microsoft in the other hand forces 3rd party PC vendors to sign exclusivity deals to sell computers with Windows only, thus preventing the entry of 3rd party operating systems from taking root. Only Dell was able to get away with it at a limited rate.
You're talking about Microsoft's actions but criticizing Apple!
Step 1: Convince Investors you've figured out hwo to sell tons of PCs
Step 2: Give yourself as insane CEO salary
Step 3: Buy a bunch of hardware
Step 4: Sell said hardware until Apple sues you
Step 5: Declare bankruptcy after 12 months of CEO salary is in bank
Wash, rinse, repeat.
You guys do realize that Psystar is still selling these things, right? The suit hasn't been concluded, and Psystar has even won a round (according to Wikipedia).
wikipedia (being user created) is wrong. Psystar has won nothing. all they did was get Apple's request for summary judgment blocked, forcing the whole copyright thing to go to trial
but the courts have validated the lack of anti trust action and will very likely slam Psystar with a DCMA violation for hacking the OS
Psystar just announced bankruptcy. Go ahead, google it.
now if i could only win a computer too play it on.
what an idiot. seriously. there is no way that Apple won't have a lawsuit going by the end of the first week. if not before then
If I was a Microsoft -hater, I'd be using these stories as proof that people want the "obviously superior" OSX. Instead, all I see is Apple fans pouring scorn on these clones.
Will it devalue your precious Macintosh? Will poor people be able to use OSX? Is that the problem?
So is your point that Apple shouldn't be trying to protect its intellectual property? Or do you just not understand why Apple is suing Psystar?
Its like this, all they have to do is sell machines that let you install OS X on them, do not sell the machines with os x already on it, just sell the machines with the proper codes so that a RETAIL bought copy of OS X will think its a legit mac.
You are not technically breaking the EULA because you do not have OS X on your machines, you just have machines that can, if the user chooses to, run OS X Apple has no legal footing to stand on, Psystar's CEO goes SHIT why didn't I think of that, and than you can see the reason why OS X should run only on mac's (When you make your own computers you can write software that doesn't crash on them because of Driver errors)
oh and for the record I'm a Apple Zealot
actually that isn't true. DCMA prohibits the circumvention of copyright protection technology. so the inclusion of anything that would make a hackintosh look like a real mac is subject to failing under that violation. particularly now that the courts have said that Apple is not violating anti-trust by tying their OS and hardware due to their lack of market share (since the applicable market is personal computers not Mac computers)
whoops my Crossover/Wine comment was for you!
Crossover is nice, however:
1. Crossover is not free (though WINE is, it requires a lot of configuration to get it just right)
2. Crossover does not support EVERY windows application, just some of the more popular ones.
3. Crossover also does not support all the windows games, just some of the more popular ones.
4. As much as they do support, there are always little gotchas and niggles here and there, even the best support is only approx 80-90% of full support, normally, just enough to get it running the majority of the time. Even then you'll still have little random issues and can become irritating.
Flattery won't get you anywhere here, go advertise somewhere else please.

The ability to store and execute lists of instructions called programs makes computers extremely versatile, distinguishing them from calculators. The Church–Turing thesis is a mathematical statement of this versatility: any computer with a certain minimum capability is, in principle, capable of performing the same tasks that any other computer can perform. Therefore computers ranging from a mobile phone to a supercomputer are all able to perform the same computational tasks, given enough time and storage capacity.{{http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3554/3696702451_dd95a007da.jpg}}
