An incredible way to start the weekend, Storm owners: Verizon is finally pulling the trigger on a firmware update, which will be available to all comers starting on Sunday at 3PM Eastern time. If that's too much trouble, you'll alternatively be able to sit back, chill, and wait for the over-the-air version to hit, which should follow on at 10PM. Verizon tells us that it'll be releasing 4.7.0.148, as
rumored -- just a tiny bump from the
failed build 141 that had been rumored before that, but all told, far, far too long since the last official update was rolled out. We can only assume this has been tested better than a NASA launch at this point, so you're on notice, guys.
already been using .148 for weeks. this is day and night difference from .75
The real question is what they will do to firmware support for the Storm after the Storm 2 comes out.
^^^ Good question. I find it interesting that the second edition of the first phone is being released so soon after the original release. Unless of course, they are running the same firmware. Kind of like the HTC Dream/Magic. Then I don't think you would have a problem with updating firmware, they would probably just push it to all users of both phones.
the dream and magic aren't comparable because one is not a direct successor to the other
But they are running the same firmware. It's a fair comparison. Different phones, same firmware.
Not really, since this is about continuing to support a device after it's been replaced. Plus, is it the exact same? your magic get the drivers and software for the keyboard?
Meh, I'm already running a hybrid version of this update....which i installed 2 weeks ago. Don't see the need for this unless they added even more features that weren't on the hybrid.
I guess that will end the good news for Verizon's smart phones for this summer.
I take it the Tour means nothing to you? It should be coming in July.
omg! thank you! (still using .75).
If this is bareble I may wait out my upgrade until verizon snags the iphone or the pre.
Glad they're finally getting around to it! Maybe it will solve the few minor complaints I have with my Storm...(Yes, I actually like my Storm...Surepress and all...)
Will be curious to get my hands on the Storm 2 once they release it.
是
My thoughts exactly!
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am on my 5th storm and 99% of the time its been due to OS .75 issue bc quite frankly, it sucks. I love all of the capabilities of the BB but this was definitely needed 5 months ago. What took so long VZW? Hopefully this fixes all the "buggyness" that I have been dealing with for 6 months!
I was going to hold off on installing a leaked firmware for the storm, why I do not know, but after a day with .75. I was done and went to .99 or .103 and it was a major improvement. I wish I had done it sooner!
I wouldn't worry about installing leaked firmwares, crackberry has information on what is fixed and broken in each release on their forums, so you know what you are getting into. I also had .103 on my wifes Storm and she took it in due to some issues. The tech their helped her and suggested she go to .113, which she requested for me to do as soon as I got home.
I am actually interested in seeing some 5.0 leaks for the Storm.
I've been rockin' with the 5.0/ .141 hybrid I found on Crackberry.com for 3 weeks now. The ONLY thing verizon can do better than that combo is to build a 5.0 OS specificly for the Storm, more app memory and a $100 credit for those that bought the Storm within 6 months of the release of the Storm 2 the want the Storm 2.
How do I download one of the leaked versions on my Storm? Sorry...I'm a newbie at this stuff. Just REALLY tired of my phone lagging and freezing...thought it was just me. :oS
Hit the crackberry.com forums.
See, at least verizon gives a time and date for their updates, unlike T-mobile and cupcake, leaving us all staring at our G1s for nothing...
You haven't got 1.5 yet? =(
HA, after tmobile announced the delay, I rooted. :P
I'm running .148 leaked, i'll believe it when I see it. Do I need to go back to official .75 from Verizon to get the official .148 or will it be same as beta hybrid from crackberry.com? Cheers!
I am not sure how a .148 to .148 upgrade will work or if it is even necessary, but you can be assured that that information will be provided at the crackberry forums. I know to do OTA that you need to have an official release.
This is good news. After 7 months of owning the phone, I may finally be able to enjoy it and use all of its features without interruption. And most importantly not be embarassed when someone asks to look at my phone and it immediately resets itself because they are trying to listen to a song, watch a video, or make a call.
Found this out last night at the Verizon Store. At least my new Storm won't be a slug (just slow as a tortoise).
its about time!!!!
I think I'm starting to tear up...just a bit.
Maybe I'll remove my Storm from the door it has been propping open.
148 is still a very buggy/shitty build (battery life, memory leak, MMS problems, etc. this phone had potential to be good. verizon blew it. hopefully there will be some leaks above .148 in the future.
The general consensus is that .148 is the best OS for the Storm to date. I also am not sure if I would put the blame on Verizon, they don't write the OS's, they just test them and either approve them or deny them. RIM is responsible for the OS and they may have dropped the ball by hacking together the current OS to support a touch screen device rather than designing it from the ground up (or as much as they could).
I think Blackberry users everywhere would be better served if RIM took over distribution of updates in the same way Apple does for the iPhone. Instead of RIM having to wait for the carriers to approve updates.
Same with Google and HTC and Android for that matter.
Phone manufacturers need to have more control over the roll-out of updates to phones, especially smart phones.
couldn't they just make a firmware that allows users to tap instead of click essentially making this a Storm 2 equivalent?
Finally!!
I wonder if this will fix Rhapsody compatibility...currently I'm urinating away 15 bucks a month on a music service I cannot use on this phone...and this supposed compatibility is the only reason I bought Storm over the iPhone.
Okay, Verizon, seriously. This is about the 4th security update today. I know you're gearing up for .148 and all, but come on!
Just updated. So far so good. Everything seems more responsive. That portrait full keyboard is strange, but everything seems to work as it should now.
Based on this thread and similar comments, I have zero confidence that Verizon will ever be able to fix the 1st gen Storm. It has served its purpose as a temporary bridge to products which promise to actually work as advertised. I get the impression that Blackberry is now focused on the 2nd Gen Storm and that Verizon is more interested in ramping up for the Pre and landing the iPhone.
No over the air upgrade as of 1:30am Monday June 1.
Are you slow? Perhaps try going to Options > Advanced Options > Wireless Update. I downloaded it at 9 PM central last night.
