Great points also. Sprint is also a struggling company so its a high risk product launch and we will know of a new iphone within 2 days or less of this thing coming out. People think that because so many people are buying the iphone that they may want to stand out of the crowd. Now theres nothing wrong with that but when a product sells as good as ipods and iphones it means more apps, more accessories and more things you can do with the phone. This phone is launching at a bad time and on only one carrier. Bad move
Bell's getting it.
But I'm waiting for unlocked GSM.
As of yesterday at least, Rogers Yorkdale already has the Android phones. Either that or they happen to have two phones that look EXACTLY like the G1 and Magic.
The keyboard is getting bad reviews, well the one review i heard about says the keyboard is not good because of its size. Unless the phone is super fat it will be a very small keyboard use logic. With all the bitching on this site about the iphone keyboard back in the early days its hilarious to see people really believing this phone will have a good keyboard and will succeed. Palm as a company is dead in the water and this phone will have to sell a crap load for them to recover. I dont think they have the money or resources to ensure this phone succeeds. I am not trying to sway anyones opinion just trying to give my 2 cents so people think about it before making a bad decision. Sorry palm pre lovers but these are just the facts you have to think about
If you're talking about this review http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/05/29/palm-pre-review/
That was a prototype phone. They shouldn't of really even reviewed it lol.
I have the Treo Pro with essentially the same keyboard and it really is not a problem. Yes it takes a day to get used to it but it is fine. And the Pre's Keys are more spaced out.
Im not a mac fan but everyone said the g1, storm, htc would beat the iPhone and now they say nothing about them. Now there saying the Pre will. I hope it will, but it will never win the vote of the general audience.
nobody ever legitimately thought those phones would be iphone killers. get real.
I think that employee is a girl look at the shoes and the fingernails
that's one husky chick
Im trying very hard to get one atm. I luckily know someone who has it at their store. Just have to get it away from the manager for more then 10 min. Want to play with it sooo bad!
in a week or 2 this thing is old en y'all will be holding your breath for a new smartphone. *hugs his trusty samsung E200*
who'd really want a TYPOED palm pre blog URL? that's probably why you managed to get it though...
With all the hype surrounding this phone, somehow I just cannot get excited about it, not to mention that it is a Sprint phone. I don't think the iPhone has anything to worry about. Now the Android phones, that is something I am excited about.
Josh? You just made my day.
iPhone FTW!
The W key is no where near the L key, I don't know how you pulled that typo off.
awwwww dont hate:)
Your avatar is saying that you shouldn't be commenting this post.
You know GeekGirl, I can't recall seeing you much in comments, but do you *really* want to be the "iPhone FTW" person? Think about it.
Josh? You just made my day.
But fixing the comments would be better
This is no iphone killer, bad reviews already???
This post has nothing to do with the iphone you morons.
Yes it does tool b/c in every Pre post on Engadget has tons anti-Apple commenters who christen this an iPhone killer.
This post has everything to do with iPhones. Palm is claiming this Pre will put a dent in iPhone sales and that's a damn lie if I ever heard one. One look at the Pre will tell you it doesn't stand a snowball's chance in hell against the iPhone.
How is it that its going to put a dent in iphone sales. I thought they were looking for a "a fat middle", people "like me" needing a mix of iphone/blackberry attributes. I don't think this has anything to do with Apple. But if you want it to be about Apple that's fine, Palm does present a compelling choice.
I love how the camera the person used to take this picture was like "Fuck the obvious subject in this picture, im going to focus on the shit in the background like the shoes, carpet, and overly priced accessory..."
lol... the phone IS in fact out of focus. Maybe the cam was on macro or some other mode? Or maybe (s)he just fired off a quick shot to avoid getting caught.
The BoyGenius review is being circulated all over the net as a definitive bad omen when they had a beta unit of unknown provenance and their "review" didn't even bother testing call quality, multitasking, camera quality or anything that actually matters. But, because they slapped the misleading title of "review" on their hackery, they're getting publicity and page views, though they have nothing of merit to offer.
@chris - Sense of humor please...
Ahh! I'll buy it at a high price! ( If it comes with a Pre >_> )
Ah!! I'll buy it at a high price!! ( If it comes with the pre >_> )
Not concerned about the keyboard comments. I use a Centro which has a similar keyboard and it works just fine for me. At the same time, I cannot get the hang of Blackberry keyboards. Used them for years and hated it. But I "got" the Centro keyboard the moment I started using it. So if the Pre is more like Centro and less like Blackberry, that's perfect.
What actually bothers me about the Pre is the lack of removable memory. The Centro's MicroSD has come in very handy for me and I don't want to lose that. Also annoyed that there's no tethering option AND that they are forcing a data plan. I already have a separate Sprint data card under contract. Don't want or need a whole data plan for the phone. They don't make me pay extra for data on the Centro. It comes included. And I hardly ever use it. So paying a ton for data? In this economy? Not very appealing. ATT's iPhone plans are the same of course. Got to pay for data. Why the heck does data have to cost so much? Dang it.
So things I don't like about the Pre are the one hardware issue and the rest is just Sprint's stupid billing plans. This is not fair to Palm.
I think jeremy franklin will get fired if he works for Sprint
With microsdhc cards so cheap, I have no idea why they didn't put a slot in there.
To make you upgrade next year to the 32gb version.
Gah I want this phone. Mow! Di di mow!
Wasn't palm partnering with adobe to create a flash player for this phone???? I could have swore that i read an article on that. Now i cant find a thing.
It's called flash lite, or flash mobile, and has always been slotted to come out later this year.
This phone is a piece of crap.
iphonerulez: probably an Apple employee
And I don't see what the hype about the Pre is all about....a touchscreen with a slider, yeah so, what's the big deal about that?
The "hype about the Pre" is pretty well documented throughout this site, starting with the "Palm Pre: The Full Story" link on the upper right of just about every page on the site. There are a ton of vids on youtube as well demonstrating the OS. Some of the short story is true multitasking, user interface, universal search, and the ability to merge various types of information (such as online and on device calendars, contacts, etc.) automatically while ignoring duplicates.
What the hell is Palm thinking? Sprint is a mess! Gary Forsee and the Sprint Board of Directors really screwed up by purchasing Nextel. Nextel's IDEN technology is so damn antiquated that Sprint won't be able to keep up with Verizon and AT&T. Also, Sprint will have exclusive rights to the Palm Pre for @ six months. If you are going for market share then why in God's name would you build a phone that isn't GSM? (Which 80 percent of the world is!)
Sprint's decision to go with WIMAX instead of LTE was a mistake. LTE will outperform WIMAX in the long term and will provide better services to the customer base. IMHO Sprint's future doesn't look good. Paul Henson is probably spinning in his grave.
Look, I want to like the like the Pre and for Palm to be successful but I just don't see how they can with the decisions they make. (Launching days before the new iPhone is unveiled?)
"Nextel's IDEN technology is so damn antiquated that Sprint won't be able to keep up with Verizon and AT&T"
- IDEN is a mixture of TDMA and GSM and last time I checked, Verizon uses CDMA just like Sprint. Also, the Pre is using CDMA not IDEN.
" If you are going for market share then why in God's name would you build a phone that isn't GSM? (Which 80 percent of the world is!) "
- I'm pretty sure they would be looking for market share in the U.S. which has better CDMA coverage than GSM. So it would make sense to use CDMA.
"Sprint's decision to go with WIMAX instead of LTE was a mistake."
- Sprint has begun rolling out WIMAX but that is because the technology was ready before LTE was. They have stated that they are still open to using LTE.
I also think that Sprint is very close to turning the corner to profitability. They went from losing 29 billion in 2007 to just 2.7 billion in 2008. I'd say that is pretty quick turn around.
@Oversteer325
All very good, and correct responses. May I also add that they have already pretty much confirmed that they are coming out with a GSM version later as well?

I don't know if someone already said this (to lazy to read the comments) but I heard that one employee per Sprint store gets a phone so they can train up on it and then be the "go to guy" for that model. So either BE that guy or KNOW that guy.
Good bye sero. Hello Pre
we have one in a store i played with it for past 3 days i am switching from my 8330 btw battery life on it 5 hours strait i tested (made a call to other phone)
I still don't see what all the hype is about. Feel free to bullet point all the features that make it better than any other new phone o.O
Look I keep hearing people talk about how small the keyboard is but I am 6'3" and wear an 11 ring and I had no problems typing on the pre when I checked it owt at Sprint the other day. There wont be any problems with you getting used to it. Its actually not that bad so just wait til you see it but I think they are gonna come owt with a few different versions of the phone so if this one is too small then you can wait on the next type of webOS they are gonna come owt with. But I do think they need to keep all their stuff under wraps til they get the new phone ready for retail. I think that will keep the hype up like it is on the iPhone and also it will keep people from hating on the phone and comparing it to something else.
