Samsung's OmniaHD gets high-def unboxing
If watching the N97 crawl out of its Espoo-designed packaging just isn't enough for one day, how's about this? An unlocked Samsung OmniaHD (or i8910, if we're being proper) has found its way into the ever-loving hands of one mareskino, and he was kind enough to unbox the thing on video. Better still, the quality here is second to none, and we'd bet you'll be drooling by the end of it. If you're ready to prove us right / wrong, hop on past the break and mash play.
[Thanks, Curtis]
[Thanks, Curtis]

Only seems fitting to have the unboxing of the OmniaHD filmed in HD. Looks cool, but I really want to see how the interface works out
Yeah an unboxing video without atleast a tease of the UI is just mt right for some reason. Thanks all the same. Nice and Sleek looking, wonder how it feels in the pockect? Do a month update to see how the screen scratches... Nice..
"we'd bet you'll be drooling by the end of it"
Hmmmm. Out of 2:26 minutes of the video, only 10 seconds were dedicated to the phone lol. No drool here :-P.
Awesome uMboxing video... lol.
That's a big ass-phone.
I agree on the big and the phone, not the ass, 'cos it is not present.... lol
its not windows mobile so it should be decent
@ Wewtaco, it's only about 2% bigger than the C905 by volume and feels much nicer in the hand/pocket due to how slim it is.
And I forgot to mention, about 8% smaller than the N96 while have a much larger screen.
Africaaaaaa! Bam Bataaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
The same guy made another video comparing the OmniaHD and iPod Touch 2G screens.
OmniaHD wins hands down IMO.

I own a 3G Iphone, but that this is almost as sexy as the touch pro 2!
I think that's NuFsAiD from you.
If it still has the same lousy battery life, horrid wifi capability and spastic touch screen as the last Omnia, then why bother?
ahh.. right.
You're in luck, it doesn't. It's a very different beast from the original Omnia.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, I wish I can put my hand on one!!!
Methinks you're gay, then.
it would take two hands to get around that monster
@ShirkPower
That's what she said ;)
@shirkpower
Thats what she said.

@shirkpower
that's what she said
I'm upranking all the people who said "thats what she said" because those commets just made my day as of 10:58 pm.
Do you like fishsticks?
Why would she say that?
umboxing
umboxing is also showing from the beginning. maybe he meant to say um...... boxing?
I'll never understand how people manage to make such stupid typos when posting stuff that millions of people are going to see. Case in point: he called it an "umboxing" at the end of the video! Oh ny!
Poo. I was too slow.
ummmbox, do bada, ba ummbox, dobada ba ummbox, do bada ba ummmm
If you click through to the original Youtube page, you'll see that the guy who posted this vid is Italian. Therefore, English is probably not his first language...
Nice...but no US 3G, and speaking with an AT&T rep at the store today, I was told that in general they only get samsung smartphones running WinMo, so it's unlikely they'll be picking this up. Hoping for T-Mobile, but otherwise, this looks like a pass. A shame too, because if not for lack of that it would be perfect.
so you'll get the giorgio armani phone then. lucky you!
No US 3G, are you blind have you read the specs for it? It does 3g on 3 different bands.
General: GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, UMTS 900/1900/2100 MHz, GPRS/EDGE class 12
If I'm not mistaken ATT uses 1900/2100 for UMTS 3G.
AT&T does not only use 1900mhz for 3g anymore, but now it uses 850mhz in areas it has an 850mhz license. So essentially it is halfbaked US 3g support. Now becoming the same as using a GSM phone with only 1900mhz on AT&T...not good.
How is it halfbaked? From wikipedia.org http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS#Real-world_implementations
"AT&T Wireless launched UMTS services in the United States by the end of 2004 strictly using the existing 1900 MHz spectrum allocated for 2G PCS services. Cingular acquired AT&T Wireless in 2004 and has since then launched UMTS in select US cities. Cingular renamed itself AT&T and is rolling out some cities with a UMTS network at 850 MHz to enhance its existing UMTS network at 1900 MHz and now offers subscribers a number of UMTS 850/1900 phones."
Which means they mainly operate on 1900 and provide additional bandwidth on 850. So this phone could do FULL 3G on ATT if brought over here.
Please watch your words Andrew. You may influence someone to buy this phone who will be sorely disappointed to find this phone not working on 3G, particularly us Californians where the 850 UMTS is lacking.
but Malkmus what are you talking about? ATT uses 1900 across the US and sometimes adds in 850 in certain areas. As far as I know they don't use 850 and 1900 so you don't need both 3g frequencies to get 3G.
It does 1900 3G so their should be no problem for 3G anywhere UMTS is available on the ATT network. From all that I have read they aren't turning off 1900 in certain areas just adding additonal UMTS broadcast bandwidth on those frequencies.
Unless I am missing something why won't this work on 3G? I have yet to see someone explain why it wouldn't, It has 1900 just like what ATT uses, so what am I missing?
You guys are WRONG WRONG WRONG. AT&T will start and has started using 850mhz for 3g in all areas it has a license to do so. Some markets ONLY have 850mhz 3g. I can tell you right now, Indy, pittsburgh, D.C. area, Evansville indiana are 850mhz. Any new 3g deployments will be on 850mhz.
In fact, 3g is being delayed in Kalamazoo for the very reason that they are buying Centennial wireless, which holds an 850mhz license that ATT does not have so that they can deploy 3g on 850mhz.
SO YES, 1900MHZ ONLY FOR UMTS WILL BE HALFBAKED ON AT&T. ALL MAJOR CITIES WITH 850MHZ LICENSE WILL EVENTUALLY SERVED PRIMARILY BY 850MHZ 3G WITH 1900MHZ CHANNEL OVERLAYS IN SOME CASES. Even still, you don't want 1900mhz 3g in an 850mhz environment. :)
I've been using a tri-band 3G HTC Touch Cruise in the US for almost 2 years now, I've never had any issues, and I travel alot.
Never been in an area that has strictly 850mhz 3g support and NOT 900.
I have already pre-ordered the OmniaHD and I plan to use it in the US with at&t 3g :)
Can anyone give us concrete facts on which areas are 850mhz ONLY and no 1900mhz support whatsoever just so I know when going there? Either way it's not going to stop me from getting this phone, this is probably the best phone I have ever seen.
I have been a windows mobile user for a long time -- never even touch Symbian before, but with everything that has packed into that beautiful looking case and screen, I am ready to take the plunge. I google searched most of my winmo apps, and 99% of them have a symbian version, or equivilant.
same phone?

the interface looks like samsung eternity's interface....
Wow that think is huge... might as well get a g1 if you want something that bulky.
@ShirkPower
Wow, that's what I said about the iPhone too.
Omnia: 123 x 59 x 12.9 mm
iPhone: 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3 mm
I think people in the market wouldn't think the size of an Omnia was necessarily a problem.
Lucky us, Apple made the iphone sleek so it fir into your hands perfectly.
Whats with those little discs, all the computers I have access to have slot drives and last time I checked those discs don't really work.
Other than that looks like a nice phone so far.
The only slot-loading disc drive that I've ever put a miniature disc into is the Wii and that works perfectly fine. Are you sure that regular ones don't work? I find it unlikely that Nintendo invented some kind of special slot loading mechanism for their game system.
@chefgon_ign- Slot-loading drives in laptops (and cars, for that matter) typically come with warnings that mini-CDs should not be inserted, as the mechanism isn't designed for them. They'll get stuck, and then you get to send your device to get repaired, or get creative and extract it yourself.
Nintendo had to specially engineer the Wii to be able to handle the smaller Gamecube discs.
DO WANT , when in the usa release date, i cant seem to find it anywhere. And where Can i buy the usa version?
This was a strange umboxing ;)... And I mean really do grown men actually listen to that kind of music... I mean that was electro robot nerdy to the extreme!
All that and he doesn't even turn it on?
They do the same thing every time unbox, then they create another article for showing off the phone.
umboxing :)
PLEASE BRING IT TO AMERICA!!!
in america we dont call our phones that way.
apparently there's a 8gb and a 16gb ala iphone?
oh look i found number 3
3. YOU FAIL
LOL. that was actually pretty good.
Your brain can't handle the difference between your and you're
My mom has this phone.
Ooooo sexy
His Mom, the phone, or both? ;)
Wake me up when the new iPhone is out in a couple months. All these phone companies coming out with iPhone competitors two years two late. Prior to the iPhone they were more than content to make POS Windows Mobile devices.
So you want us to wake you up when the iphone has ALMOST as many features as the phones you are insulting had 4 years ago?
@patriotsn1
stfu u know as well as everyone else that the iphone massively changed the mobile world in a positive way
Unboxing videos alone are lame. How about unboxing + video review of the device powered on and demonstration for the UI?
he put the "um" back in "umboxing"
I don't trust Samsung phones as far as i can throw them...wait i can throw them pretty far now that i think about it.
can someone please enlighten me on this messages/spams?
lol @ umboxing
@sam:
9.TWICE!
O o p s. ;)
hehehe
Wasn't there meant to be an android version of this coming out? I'm sure it will get announced just before the Samsung i7500 is released, meaning I have to wait even longer to get my new phone.
Although if that does happen, I'd probably just settle for the i7500.
Sweet, proprietary Samsung power/data jack as always. At least LG switched to microUSB.
Those looked like a micro usb power port and a mini usb data port, to me.
It's a STANDARD MICRO USB jack.
Ever heard of getting the facts straight BEFORE you post?
The Best multimedia phone to date!! Eat sh!t iPhone! (I'm an iphone owner)
The proprietary jack is alright by me, as long as they make it sturdy. Samsung's jacks are so slim you can almost break them.
It's not proprietary, it's microUSB (charging + data).
C'mon Verizon...
Also, it's important to note that this phone has a variation of compiz.
After watching the video, I was more convinced about what Chris Ziegler's had termed the Samsung Omina a few days ago - "Rotten Eggs in a Box."
Smexy ;)
I'm in the market for a new phone, should I get this or the Pre?
o.O
I have the current Omnia but i would switch it for a Pre if possible. I would really like the Omnia HD but my mind is set for Pre if it makes it to Europe before it's old news... As for Omnia battery life.. 4 days of light use. 3 with wifi on... Only a few hours with GPS and google.maps when driving :-)
so the person who bought the phone is natalie for 37 euros? or did i pause and read the receipt wrong?
you can read the price at 0:14 seconds - its 499 euros (~ $700), probably unlocked.
...and I found #9:
9. YOU FAIL EPICALLY
Umboxing sure snells fummy. This should whole segment really needs 2 parts, and the second part should be actually showing off the phone, maybe calling it the powering on?
