AMD ships six-core 'Istanbul' Opteron CPU ahead of schedule
Say it ain't so! Despite AMD's past of announcing more delays than actual shipping products, the outfit has managed to deliver its six-core 'Istanbul' Opteron CPU five months ahead of schedule. Announced today in a company press event, the new chip is shipping today with support for two-, four- and eight-socket servers. If all goes well, they'll be available to order from the likes of Cray, HP, Dell, IBM and Sun later this month, with HE, SE and EE versions of the six-core Opteron planned for the second half of this year. As for performance, users can expect up to 34 percent more performance-per-watt over the previous generation quad-core processors in the same platform, though we wouldn't expect to see these stray too far from traditional server boxes.

Answers to your questions:

1. What questions are you talking about?
2. What the hell do you mean, "Yes"?
No?
Will I need a second mortgage to afford it?
Can it run Crysis?
@superhobo
Blend, Crysis - Not in that particular order
I hope that was a poor effort at sarcasm
I bet it will blend very, very well.
..but you're probably better off using nVidia's standalone renderer on one of their gpu's.
I don't do much in the way of 3d animation, so two cores is good for me.
Why can't engadget do what all the other self-respecting blogs are doing with their comment policy and kick anyone who posts "first, blend, or crysis" comments? I think it would be great to have more on topic comments.
And now my on topic comment: Will this put any pressure on Intel, who recently delayed their next i-platform because they aren't getting any competition?
Nice, but...
WHERE ARE THE GOOD MOBILE CHIPS?
I hear they're supposed to be revealing some stuff at Computex this week. Engadget should be covering it, so keep your eyes peeled.
This Fabless AMD seems to have really improved everything. Now AMD come on and show use some Core i7/i5 competition!
They will. Right after Intel releases Sandy Bridge.
I bet the guys that design processors are really good at Sim City... Have you ever looked at a one of those and just admired it just for the beauty of it's precision and organization?
Time to buy AMD stock. They are getting their game together after three disastrous years and a very complex merger. Good news Everybody AMD is back in 2009 with a bang!!!
Was the dev code name was 'Constantinople'?
thats way too logical...
i bet it was something random like "bashful identetycrysis"
why is there no way to edit your posts if you notice some 3rd grade typos in it?
@Pfanne
Because it's Engadget and that's how they roll......
Because they're still trying to make sure replies get matched up with the right posts?
one of these days, AMD will be at the top again.. (fanboy)
IMO, they are at the top of the market. In servers, that is.
I like AMD and wish them well as much as the next guy, but you have to face the facts:
1) AMD has just been crushed in the dual-socket server market by Nehalem-EP. In fact, a dual-processor Nehalem-EP (quadcore) setup rivals a QUAD-socket Opteron platform. (quad-core).
2) it is great that the 6-core Istanbul is out early and available in 4 and 8-socket versions right away. This should allow AMD to dominate most larger server installations for now as the 6-core Intel Dunnington (Core 2 based) can't keep up because of being memory starved by the front side bus. That said, this will only last through 2009 at the latest, as the coming eight-core, quad-memory channel, 32MB L3, Nehalem-EX is supposed to ship in early Q1 2010, and based on Nehalem-EP's performance, should absolutely *dominate* the high-end server market. Perhaps even putting the final nail into Itanium and stealing a lot of the high-end RISC marketshare as well.
is it just me or does this look like a world map from Zelda in like Nintendo Power or something?
Awesom!
why 'istanbul' ??
Constantinople wouldn't fit..
People just liked it better that way.
it's no nobody's business but the turks.
six slender minarets of the Sultanahmet Mosque (better known as the "Blue Mosque") dominate the skyline of Istanbul
1453. Ulubatli AMD
I predict problems and recalls on this chip.
And I expect unfounded, unsupported douchebag comments. Lets see which one pans out?
phenom III X6
Phenom II X3 Duo!
Where is my 6 / 8 core consumer desktop processor? Is the only reason for these being enterprise only because of cost, or just because they require special motherboards that don't have PCI-e 16x slots?
I want to convert my 720p TV library / 1080p movie library to the proper resolution for the new Zune and another resolution for streaming over my 1mbps upload (damn you, TWC!). Most of my DVD-quality rips are just raw ISOs... I need to convert those, too. At the highest quality, of course. Mutli-pass!
Okay, some one post a link to an octo-processor board. I can find quad socket boards, but none with 8 sockets.
there was a octosocket BeBox way back... photos of it got leaked... Oh wait that was probably a slot 1 system nvm XD
I want to see benchmarks in VmMark against the Nehalem!!!! Thats a real test! lets see how this puppy really performs!
I hope that AMD will give Intel true competition and when the economy rebounds, we as consumers will benefit with some hefty price reductions from both chip makers.
