NVIDIA strikes gold with Ion: 21 new products at Computex
We had a hunch that Computex would be a massive show for NVIDIA, and while we already caught a glimpse of what the GPU manufacturer had in store, we had no idea it'd come out with guns this big a-blazin'. Showing absolutely no mercy for those other integrated graphics sets of the world, NV's today unveiled 21 new Ion-based products in Taiwan, with all but a handful being completely unheard of. Of course, there's the AspireRevo, Ion 330 and IdeaPad S12, but outside of that select few, everything else is all new. Asus is introducing its C2N7A-I motherboard and all-in-one Eee Top ET2002, Colorful is busting out its iHTPC, ECS is pushing out a new desktop and MSI is showcasing its Windtop AE201. And that's just to name a few. Hop on past the break for the full spill, and don't stray too far -- we'll be out and about grabbing hands-on time with as many of these as we can track down.

Nankang Exhibition Hall.
The new NVIDIA ION-based PCs and platform solutions are great for high definition video,
mainstream gaming, and GPU-accelerated video and photo editing applications that take
advantage of NVIDIA CUDA™ technology.
ION also supports DirectX Compute as part of Microsoft's upcoming Windows 7 operating
system. DirectX Compute running on NVIDIA's CUDA compute hardware architecture delivers
a major boost for small form factor PCs because it accelerates applications like video editing that
run poorly or not at all on today's low-powered PCs. Other GPU-accelerated applications like
vReveal and Badaboom let users quickly edit video and convert it for use on a portable media
player like an iPod.
"NVIDIA is really shaking up the small form factor space with ION graphics," said Rob Enderle,
Principal Analyst for the Enderle Group. "Netbooks and nettops are the hottest selling items in
the PC space right now, but most are severely limited. ION removes the major chunk of that
performance limitation allowing PC vendors the perfect blend of design, performance, and value
that drives sales in hard times."
"Consumer interest in the Acer AspireRevo featuring NVIDIA's ION graphics has been
overwhelming," said Gianpero Morbello, senior vice president of corporate marketing for Acer.
"The Acer AspireRevo clearly demonstrates the power of ION to deliver a full and unique
multimedia experience for an amazingly low price. We see strong consumer demand in this
space."
NVIDIA ION graphics processors deliver big performance from small PCs with up to 10X faster
graphics than similar systems1. ION graphics support:
• Windows 7 and Windows Vista Home Premium

I'm still hoping to find something with a Core 2 Duo in there and a very small form factor.
There are some small form factor motherboards that support core 2 duos, and with a small case, you can build one on newegg pretty cheaply.
Ask M$ about that. They control what goes into the form factor.
Something like a cheaper like the 11in Sony TT with dvd or blu-ray, the Asus U2E, or Lenovo U110 with a external dvd drive? I know I am looking at a cheaper version of the Sony TT(with looks of the TZ) at the price of let say 800 or so base?
SFF C2D Mobile on Montevina board. Is this what you're looking for?
http://www.logicsupply.com/products/ms_9a08
And a more obvious solution is a Mac Mini.
what's with all this hype with the Ion? what makes it better?
Well it gives netbooks+nettops better graphics performance. Which is really needed b/c intel's graphics chips blow. This also will in turn help improve overall performance and maybe to an extent battery/heat management.
Potential HD support in a small package, say a netbook/nettop. 1080i anyone?
GMA950 graphics are very anemic. nVidia 9400GM is a couple generations beyond. I wouldn't particularly doubt the 10x performance claim.
Most people now , no longer need a big desktop with a huge processor. Imagine You could play high def video on a netbook, why would you need a desktop for? no need to convert video, when you can just play them directly.
Also, imagine a small cheap box connected via HDMI to your tv, and its wireless with a harddrive, you just fill it up with movies and play on the tv in perfect res on a tiny box. No need to lug around a big desktop or media center
>> "Imagine You could play high def video on a netbook, why would you need a desktop for?"
Mmmmmm.... 10.2" HD goodness!
I'll still use a desktop for video EDITING... and a netbook for mobile web browsing and email, and the occasional visit to Hulu, etc.
Apparently it only accelerated blu ray video and such like, not HD flash. not HD mkv/xvid and so on.
Its not good for flash video performance, which will still be crap on netbooks, I hope they fix this.
ION = nVidia 9400M (MCP79) integrated graphics + Intel Atom + a heaping spoonful of marketing hype. It will be more outperform Intel 945GSE, most significantly offering better support for video decoding, but it will also consume more power.
Makes me wanna get the S12 :P Also I find it interesting that the ION will support VIA chipsets.
when are we going to see more laptops with the HybridPower tech? (auto switching between integrated/dedicated)
i'm not sure i know of any that use it.
Anyone notice the lack of HDMI ports on those netbooks including the S12!
"all of these are new" What are you talking about? Most of them you already posted about:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/13/dozens-of-ions-captured-showing-no-charge-whatsoever/
This is the official press release post.
But will it ble...
Er.... I'll save that for another time.
That shits just as annoying as people that say it.
Nothing says success like Rob Enderle supporting it.
In all seriousness, I will be quite envious of this when using my old Eee.
Oh hey... a bunch of products I have no interest in. I guess asking them to put this platform into an actual netbook is too much to ask.
There's three netbooks in that list.
this tells you how the world doesn't always revolve around you
Notebooks aren't netbooks, neither are nettops.
@lpppppl
You're a dick... how's that working out for ya?
Just so you know, Cash, you typed netbook in your initial post. So yes, a netbook is a netbook. Check your own work before chastising your responders.
Shit was so Cash!
Can't wait till it comes in sli ;D
Come on Sony, get this in your VAIO P so I can "justify" buying it!
Yeah, thanks for the E3 coverage. This looks like it could really boost performance in netbooks.
What I would like to know is if the ION platform assists flash video, allowing a netbook with an atom processor to actually play Hulu without skipping. I was shocked to find out that normal netbooks aren't capable of this.
No. See post shortly after this with more.
You need to talk to Adobe, not the manufacturers. Adobe hasn't encoded GPU acceleration yet.
Adobe has GPU acceleration in PS, why the hell can't they add it to flash...
http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1243934217700.html
oh ho?
Awesome, hopefully I can afford one pretty soon if we can get our jobs back....
Awesome, hopefully I can afford one pretty soon if we can get our jobs back....
Where is the 3D accelerated MID's coming out?
I have a couple of these Asrocks in stock in the UK, they are very limited stock for the time being. I haves posted some links on youtube of the system running various apps including COD 4, search for Weaver computers and / or Ion 330, there are about 6 videos.
I was surprised at the performance of the unit and temp compared to its size, the HDMI output is a nice touch.
It's good to see ION finally making it into the netbook ecosystem. This will definitely raise the bar for netbook multi-media performance.
Qualcomm seems to be leading the charge with Snapdragon, for ARM-based smartbooks. It would be nice to see Nvidia Tegra added to the smartbook mix, as well.
There is some really awesome stuff going on in mobile computing these days!
It would be nice to have a small form factor nettop that could be attached to your LCD, keep it out of sight. I really hope the ION delivers what Nvidia is claiming, I think it will to be honest.
I'm holding out on buying an HTPC in lieu of buying one of these little suckers!
