Samsung slaps "production-ready" label on 14.1- and 31-inch OLED TVs
Samsung's been kicking around its 14.1- and 31-inch OLED TVs since CES 2008, but it seems as if things are turning for the better at SID this week. In a press release outed today, Sammy told the world that it's exhibiting "production-ready" AMOLED TV sets, though the sizes are the same as the ones we've seen before. The 31-incher really has our attention, with it being the planet's first OLED with a Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display, a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, a color gamut of over 100 percent NTSC and an 8.9 millimeter slim enclosure. So, when does "production-ready" morph into "in production?" Bueller?

Shinigami @ Jun 1st 2009 12:42PM
I can give you approx price ($10,000+) and date (2010 or later) but no monies here either.
mikethevee @ Jun 1st 2009 11:00AM

@ian9outof10
If a photograph contains a "no photography" sign, then yes, it is ironic
Cunthor @ Jun 1st 2009 6:35PM
@ mikethevee
I just want you to get another email notification really.
Sirius @ Jun 1st 2009 11:39PM
I think the photographer deliberately included it in the shot :P
TriniBreds @ Jun 1st 2009 11:03AM
31 Inch OLED!! . . . I can't even imagine the price with Sony's 11incher pushing $2500
mikethevee @ Jun 1st 2009 11:07AM
that's what she said....
PuBeLeSs @ Jun 1st 2009 11:19AM
really thats is how much the 11inch sony is? omg :( oled is insane.
Shinigami @ Jun 1st 2009 12:43PM
@PuBeLeSs
Why charge less if its the *only* OLED TV sold in the world? Besides, "Its a Sony"!
JrA 2I9 pSu @ Jun 1st 2009 11:04AM
...I'm fairly certain you could manage to find a laptop with more power, longer battery life, AND blu-ray for only a little bit more money, if not the same or a bit less. Epic fail.
JrA 2I9 pSu @ Jun 1st 2009 11:06AM
so I just realized that I posted this comment in the wrong window...ignore this as it dosn't apply to samsung's sweet, sweet full HD OLED tv...'drools'
hemmy @ Jun 1st 2009 11:26AM
epic fail indeed :)
anexanhume @ Jun 1st 2009 11:29AM
Who still uses different WINDOWS for web browsing?
random @ Jun 1st 2009 12:08PM
anexanhume - Since Windows 7 came out
Shinigami @ Jun 1st 2009 12:45PM
@anexanhume
I do. Vista on laptop, XP on PC.
benhc911 @ Jun 1st 2009 12:50PM
i think when he was remarking about windows, he meant as opposed to tabs... not that I am certain as I am not him ^__^
JrA 2I9 pSu @ Jun 1st 2009 3:39PM
I was referring to windows as opposed to tabs; I had multiple browser windows open with multiple tabs. lowest ranked ftw!
NoAndThen @ Jun 1st 2009 11:12AM
I want these to go into production wicked bad! I'm not going to be able to buy one for another 5-10 years, but the faster they come out, the faster the prices go down- and the faster they iron out issues the early adopters find out.
I still want one though. 1,000,000:1? Yes please
GallonOMilk @ Jun 1st 2009 11:38AM
l agree, I'm very excited. But I'm wondering about the 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Is that static or dynamic? Because Samsung's new LED HDTVs have 3,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, from what I've read in the store.
r3loaded @ Jun 1st 2009 11:46AM
I'm guessing the quoted ratio is static, and hence the 'true' contrast of the OLED screen will be much, much better than the dynamic contrast of an LED-backlit LCD.
Hey, this is OLED, you better start getting used to insane numbers!
Richard @ Jun 1st 2009 12:04PM
The whole contrast thing has become a sick joke and the figures aren't even close to the truth. Plus, contrast on its own is a worthless figure since a 1 lumen display could achieve infiniate contrast if it can shut off all light ouput when displaying black. They should quote three figures: the ANSI contrast, the
Of course quoting figures like 4:00:1
kadajawi @ Jun 1st 2009 12:31PM
True, but on the other hand we are going to see more often what we are missing out on. :( Since I've laid eye on that Kodak OLED picture frame my monitors just don't look very good anymore... (although the CRT can still hold up quite well, minus the flickering and the problem of making everything above 80% black just black).
Nacho PATA @ Jun 1st 2009 8:46PM
Is it just me (and hardware reviewers), or are "contrast ratios" becoming the biggest joke since a 13.9" 15" CRT?
AlCabone @ Jun 1st 2009 11:23AM
The 14.1" one is only 2.7mm thick.
Down @ Jun 1st 2009 12:35PM
That's getting really close to paper thick.
Shinigami @ Jun 1st 2009 12:46PM
Doesn't make sense - it doesn't fold.
iKurt 5D @ Jun 1st 2009 1:35PM
That's what she said.
hemmy @ Jun 1st 2009 11:27AM
I'll take 2. Who needs kidneys anyway?
kal326 @ Jun 1st 2009 11:30AM
Either you are selling one kidney for a ridiculously high price, or have yet to realize you can't sell them both and live....long or far away from a dialysis machine.
hemmy @ Jun 1st 2009 3:41PM
@kal
humor, who needs that? :)
rudy @ Jun 1st 2009 11:37AM
Who do I have to blow for a 30 inch oled screen?
windblownmonkey @ Jun 1st 2009 11:43AM
They call him... "Big Sam"
Samboini @ Jun 1st 2009 3:22PM
**unzips trousers**
Greg @ Jun 1st 2009 8:22PM
That's what she said
why not the LS2LS7? @ Jun 1st 2009 11:39AM
Samsung needs to concentrate on fixing the software on their TVs before they make new ones.
I'd love to have one of their very think current LCD HDTVs, but they take about 30 seconds to turn on. They turn on so slowly that they have a blinking light at the bottom to tell you they are in the process of turning on.
I've never used a TV that takes that long to turn on and I grew up in the 70s. CRT TVs turned on and warmed up far faster than this, even back then.
r3loaded @ Jun 1st 2009 11:48AM
Dude, it's about 3-5 seconds! Unless you've somehow confused an LCD panel TV with a rear-projection TV.
Soulsaber @ Jun 1st 2009 11:53AM
Plasma ftw!
windblownmonkey @ Jun 1st 2009 12:14PM
My lcd comes up in about 5 seconds...?
