Alienware's 'All Powerful' M17x gaming rig with dual GTX 280M graphics ready to frag your savings
Just because you're timid and demure doesn't mean your laptop has to be. Alienware's M17x "All Powerful" gaming rig with option for twin GTX 280 GPUs is now up for grabs on Dell's retail site. While the base configuration starts at $1,799, we went ahead and priced it fully loaded just for kicks. As such, our rig is stuffed with a 2.53GHz Core 2 Extreme Quad QX9300 ("the most powerful mobile processor in the world" according to Dell), Vista Ultimate, dual GTX 280M running in SLI, the 1920x1200 WideUXGA LCD panel, 8GB of 1333MHz DDR3 memory, and a pair of 256GB SSDs for 500GB of RAID 0 storage, slot-loading Blu-ray combo drive, and ExpressCard ATSC tuner with remote. The damage? $5,587. Who says gaming doesn't kill?
Update: NVIDIA has confirmed that this monster exists.

i dont see the point of a gaming laptop... that costs this much
When will they learn that we already know computer components lose their value very quickly in gaming community.
The slot loading blu ray drive sounds sweet...
This "notebook" has dual GTX 280M's... and you're excited about the slot loading blu ray drive? :p
My wallet just got pwned
Along with common sense
LOL!!!
I'd like to see a comparison with the Asus w90vp x1. The Asus seems to be the perfect balance between power and affordability.

The W90vp has had a lot of problems and complaints of below-par performance. Something to do with the way the crossfire is configured, and also the available graphics drivers. There has been a lot of returns.
it is so you can pwn on the goez and be the butt of cruel jokez that you cannot hear over the constant "headshot" coming from Unreal Tournament 3.
~z's added for enphasis~
I could live with that. It better be have BIG BANG FOR EACH BUCK worth, or it'll be just another computer that hangs a lot faster
Technology sappin' mah wallet!
... Laptop .... Geesuz. Didn't see a battery listed, anyone know the battery life.. 1hr maybe? Nor the size/weight (small car perhaps). Regardless it's what makes alienware cool, that they just do it even if it is ridiculous. We need that, most companies just release the next crumb.
I like the custom build option... Mouse pointers. LOL.
$5.5K? I think not. And I thought Apple products were over priced! :-p Four years ago, when times were "flush" I could see a big enough market for this; but today? Hell no. Sure, they'll sell some to people who always have to be on the bleeding edge... but I have a feeling most people will laugh at these poor souls once they learn the price. Sorry, we all have our opinions (hence the popular saying), but this thing just says stupid to me. JMHO.
Oh, and weight. IIRC it's something like ELEVEN POUNDS. Not a laptop by any stretch of the imagination; 100% desktop replacement. (Or rather two or three damn nice desktops) Sure, there's a damn good amount of technology in that 11lbs... but can you honestly imagine trying to travel with this bloody thing?!
I have to agree - shoot back in the day (before high speed internet) we used pack up our PCs and bring them all over the place to do LAN parties. And that was with GIANT 21" CRT monitors!!
These days you can get ALOT of power into a Mico ATX, and with a 17" flat panel display under your arm your good to go for like $4000 less!
OK, I didn't absorb the starting price of ~$1.8k. Keep it around $2k or so, and it's a different story. Still kind of obscene in my own personal view; but not on the same level as fully loaded. Still, 11lbs? Jeez!
jason51873 - I remember those days! :-D Haven't gone to a LAN party in ages, kind of miss it. But, yeah, prior to LCD screens and good small(er) cases? Holy s***. Lugging around a mid-full tower case, 19-21" CRT and all the other crap? Then deal with all the usual networking issues, getting all the games installed, patched, etc? Was usually an hour or two before we even started gaming. :-p Can't believe I used to do that on a somewhat regular basis!
-Jason (good name!)
Come on, it's an impressive piece of engineering, even if the only people who buy it made their money back in the 90's. At the very least it's cool to have as a benchmarking reference so people can see how little they're missing out on when they "only" spend $1200.
The basic model is $1800 and doesnt even have a blu-ray drive. These days, even a lot of $1000 (and under) laptops have blu-ray. Talk about bad value.
You're talking about Alienware.
Value, lol.
The sad thing is, as usual, that it won't beat a desktop PC equipped with the same (desktop flavor) parts, which also costs a lot less; so what if this is supposed to be portable, a 12-pound+ laptop isn't "portable" anymore in my book, and its battery autonomy is near nil anyway.
Nowadays anything cordless is considered portable.
Well, at least mouse pointers are standard, according to that spec sheet.
Who fucking buys these things???????
Same type of people who spend a lot on gadgets each year.
Game Developers.
You can build a desktop with those same specs for about 3k.
U want it?
You can customize a very nice system for $2700 if you go for the t9600(2.8GHz dual core), dual GTX280M SLi, and the 1200p display, and leave every thing else base. The blu-ray drive a only a $150 option, I don't own any blu-ray movies so skip that.
The upgrades are what get you, $950 for 8gb of ram mind you they are a 1333MHz. The dual SSD will set you back another $800. The QX9300 is $850, too bad they do not offer an extreme dual core.
Since the M17x includes a Nvidia 9400 GPU for when your not gaming, The battery life should be very good for a 17inch gaming PC. If you disable all the lights and put it into stealth mode you should get even more.
"the most powerful mobile processor in the world"
I think they forgot to add, "for at least a few months".
The Nehalem Mobile chips are due out before the end of the year in both 45nm AND 32nm.

Save your pennies and get one of those machines instead.
I think this computer is hot!! What I dont think is hot, however, is the way Dell has taken over the Alienware brand. When you go to customize this notebook your are redirected from the intro on alienware.com, to dell.com to actually customize and purchase the machine. With this new change comes the bloatware that dell likes to force people to purchase "as included" in the price of the computer. If this doesnt change, the m17 may just be the last gaming notebook that I will have purchased from Alienware(Dell).
I cant believe how much everyone complains about 11lbs!!! That's not alot of weight! Its just like carrying a college text book! I carry my 9.5lb m17 around all the time. If you have the right backpack or messenger bag, It's not a hassel at all.
