Sony just announced the
rumored new motion controller for the PS3 -- the prototype looks like a wand with a color-changing ball on top. It's designed to work in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye, with the wand overlaid on-screen with a weapon or tool. Unlike Microsoft's Project Natal, Sony says they've learned "some experiences need buttons," which is why there's still a controller involved. The system is said to be "sub-millimeter" precise, and it was demoed drawing and playing a shooter -- it's sort of the middle ground between Natal and Wii Motion Plus. Sony says it'll launch in the spring of 2010, but we don't know what pricing will be like yet.
Update: Video added after the break!
looks like something...."for her pleasure" if u know what i mean...
Why is Danny Dyer up there?
Alright bruvva?
Can it run World Of World Of Warcraft?
I'll burn some books to clean up the shelve space!
This has a future, Nintendo proved that, Sony have taken the concept, made it work absolutely perfectly and have demonstrated actual code to show it's all happening in honest to god realtime.
And so obviously, you all hate it.
MS on the other hand have faked a video of an idea, which will by it's nature suffer from crippling lag and inaccuracy, will almost certainly require a noticeable portion of your Console's CPU attention to enable and has no effing buttons, meaning that every single action in game will require a movement large and deliberate enough for the system to see.
And so obviously, you all love it.
You are making assumptions based on an early concept.
Maybe MS or some other company will come out with a controller to be used along with Natal. They faked a video? You obviously haven't read Joystiq's or IGN's hands-on with the demo they had. If anyone can pull of a working full body motion detection system, it's MS. They've got the programmers and the money.
I personally think that Nintendo is in trouble. Look at the all the things MS and Sony are adding to their console experience, in addition to a wide variety of games. Plus, if their motion detection technologies actually do well, what has Nintendo got to compete with that? Zelda? Mario? That can only take you so far.
For their next home console, before they think about graphics or blu-ray or wacky peripherals, they really need to develop a proper online system. Friend codes just ain't gonna cut it.
"Sony have taken the concept, made it work absolutely perfectly and have demonstrated actual code to show it's all happening in honest to god realtime"
- yep ,your right, real time in a room, with no textures, only solid colors and what appears to be 64, 128, or 256 levels of shading when the flashlight was demoed.
"MS on the other hand have faked a video of an idea, which will by it's nature suffer from crippling lag and inaccuracy, will almost certainly require a noticeable portion of your Console's CPU attention to enable and has no effing buttons, meaning that every single action in game will require a movement large and deliberate enough for the system to see."
- How certain are you? Are you saying that the PS3 solution will not require any CPU resources from the CELL? You saw a computer track a dot and accept button inputs. That was all. Your thinking is a bit linear / narrow. PS3 did it with 1 existing camera and a blue tooth controller with a color dot representing the point of interest. Are you truly certain that NATAL cannot be built to allow the two internal cameras to detect the movement of the person, process that information and then transmit that information as simple controller inputs? Your saying that the new hardware that we (the consumers) know nothing about cannot possibly have processors and firmware built directly into it the provide that need for horsepower before providing that processed information the gaming console?
I don't care either way at this point, because nothing is out on the market, I can't buy either solution yet, I've not seen any games built for either solution. Get your head out of your PS3's HDMI port and start realizing that there may be more than one system out there can meet the needs of consumers.
"MS on the other hand have faked a video of an idea" - One last thing here.... Not only is a prototype working with Burnout: Paradise as stated by others, there is video of people playing that game, and in that video, the developers from MS stated that DEV kits have shipped to the game developers....so the 'idea' as you put it, is a bit more reality that your willing to admit.
Good luck to all the motion control / tracking contestants. Let the consumers pick the true winner of this contest.
Natal is finished enough to work with burnout paradise http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/989/989269p1.htm It sounds good but i don't know how natal would do a fps without a joystiq cuz how would u move ur character in the game
The bow and arrow demo looks sick.
WTF has resolution got to do with this?
sorry new to posting put this in wrong comment.
Does anyone besides me think this is just a blaten copy of the Wiimote
HAHAHA provide casual experiences...this is why its going to fail! casual gamers would be willing to shovel out 250 for a wii, but not 600 for a ps3
With true 1:1 and the PS3, there is enough for a Billy Mays joke:
"That's the POWER and PRECISION of the Dual Shock Motion"
Color of clothing wont mean anything. The color changes of the controller are merely cosmetic. Internally it is emitting wireless frequencies that home in on the position of the emitter (controller). Heck with technology these days, they can lock a missile on that thing from 40 miles away!
"some experiences need buttons"
I Agree with that!
How about shooting with bow and arrows with NATAL ? ahhhhh
Natal games will be just simplistic freaking casual games. I dont want that! We dont need another Wii.
but natal lacks feedback. as sony has mentioned feedback is quite important why did gamers ask for rumblepad? they could probably improve the controller and add some rumble capability to their wands. that way when someone pulls an arrow they can feel a response or something when you pull the bowstring. with natal there is no feedback in mimicing the pull and release of an arrow.
It looks good, but I'm not sure I'm buying it, or Natal at this point. The issue for me is why I like my 360 and PS3 over my Wii....graphics. I play 360 games @ 1080, no lag. I play my PS3 games @ 1080, no lag. I play my Wii game @ 480, yes no lag, but the graphics can't compare.
The question I have for the PS3 is clearly, it is using a bluetooth controller to communicate with the PS3, and the Eye attachment. Ok, so where is the tracking processing being done? The Cell right? Can't be done anywhere else. If MS wanted to do this, they could have already done it with the Vision Camera.
With Natal, there is at least a chance that the image processing and motion tracking is being done in the natal package and then sending those signals to the 360 for placement in the environment. So it's possible the overhead for the 360 will be minimal. Where as the overhead for the same functions will have to be absorbed totally by the PS3 Cell.
The other thing I wonder about is that while the 1 to 1 was impressive, the graphics looked very low res. Solid surfaces, solid textures, minimal shading (256, maybe?) So it looked very speedy, in an environment that looked native to a Wii on the screen. Put it in a high resolution game - Little Big Planet? And see how responsive the 1 to 1 is. Watching the video (admittedly, it was from a streaming internet source) the sound appeared to lag when swinging. I would love to see this demo posted to PSN so I can see it clearly.
As far as fighting game goes, how are you going to play it with this? Push a button for your legs?
I was impressed by the Natal video showing that it would track legs so movement would be everything. Not just the arms. I want to see the voice print recognition, as well as the facial recognition demonstrated with MILO to be ported and demonstrated for game usage.
I am impressed by the PS3 video showing that there was very accurate movement. But again, to offer voice print or work recognition would be more software tweaks for the PS3 OS and handled by the Cell. That Natal could process internally, to say nothing of being able to offer facal recognition.
I think the next six to ten months are going be very interesting when it comes to listening to the pros and cons of both of these new and exciting technologies.
microsoft attempted games with the vision camera... it didnt go so well. it was just put your body in this position and move like this. then it plays back everything you did to make it look like you are in a movie and stuff like that.
are you def and blind? the controllers have the orbs with LEDs inside which the camera tracks. and its very accurate. also the controllers themselves have motion technology on the inside, so its not the orbs on the controller being moved around, its the orbs tracking how high and low and right and left it is in real life.
this is a tech demo... not a real game... of course the graphics they used on the things they played around with dont look great. but when he was using the sword on those monsters and shot them with a bow those monsters looked pretty good, and it worked very very very very very very smoothly :P
lol, it is on PSN dude, download the e3 09 videos if theyre still on there. i watched it like twice and no lag on anything was shown for this. but on natal it was. please dont contradict yourself by making a statement about something else while not fully understanding the product you are defending. natals "in game" footage on the trailer was so easy to see the lag it was laughable. it even had a bit of lag on what they played for people, but it wasnt fake as you could tell cause the motions did match up. but natal lagged a tiny bit when it was just simple, move forwards and backwards, side to side, and when she tried hitting stuff. but at least it was just a tiny tiny bit. i havent noticed any lag on sonys new controllers.
ps3 has voice recognition and you can use any microphone to do it...
dude... project natal uses the pitch of your voice to recognize speech. NOT TRUE word recognition. so its still not impressive. ps2s socom did the very same thing and it worked pretty well. lol, natal is basically two good cameras(i think cause you can see two lenses on the box its in) and a microphone. its not a seperate processing device. its the same as a really good smart camera and a good microphone. which ps3 has had and so did the ps2.
heres a tip, think more in detail about this and things like it. it helps you realise more stuff and learn more.
Well, has it occurred to anyone that, games using Natal can still provide passive props ?
I mean, if its a bow and arrow game, they can provide u with one, for the feel, and use the natal to perhaps recognize the bow, and your hand movements to accurately decide how to launch the arrow ?
Admit it, Natal is absolutely stunning. I guess games using natal will also provide some sort of active controllers or passive props to enhance the gaming.
This is something I'm totally NOT excited for. I mean the Wii was fun for like a week. Now it's just annoying.
for those worrying about the controllers light up colors and other objects...
the controller is lit up on the orb, so it will be more obvious to the eyetoy, and it is smaller and perfectly orb shaped unlike a shirt or pants. so the problem with background object messing with the tracking probably doesnt exist or doesnt affect the gameplay much. anyways, i never even see people that are over 14 years old that wear colorful shirts anymore. usually just black and white now.
but anyways, sonys new motion technology is freaking amazing to me and i cant wait to play a first person rpg with swords and stuff :D. imagine an MMO with this stuff as the controls. now you could finally show the people pretending to be fast and powerful in real life how weak they actually are cause you can actually do something with your body. i cant wait for this and the games, hopefully many mainstream games come out for it and not just $5.99 online games. but im sure the small games will be fun anyways :P
natal isnt actually stunning... the pseye has done 3D tracking before on the video making thing that comes with it when it puts a virtual sword into the persons hand on the TV and they can move it around freely. natal isnt even as accurate at all anyways. they showed cgi and fake gameplay where the responses on the so called "in game" footage were faster then then the real persons movements. as for the real game footage they show it was much simpler and slower movements. the only great thing about is it worked. the ps2 could that with the eyetoy. when the moving object gets closer to the screen it will appear bigger. thus making the in game character move forwards once it detects that the object has gotten bigger or make the in game character back up when the object has gotten smaller. there is also hand and face recognising technology in like all those games pretty much. but natal probably is better then the eyetoy at that sort of thing. but its not as accurate the new motion technology sony has, not by a long shot. :\ plus its far easier and more comfortable holding a real object when pretending youre in a sword fight on a game.
Damn an exact copy of Wii's Wii MotionPlus and don't say it isn't because it exactly is.I mean it has the same amount of accuracy. Damn coppiers couldn't think of something original so it stole something from the Wii.
