Just
as expected, Sony just announced the PSP Go at E3 just now -- Haz Kirai called it the "worst kept secret at E3." The slider handheld has a 3.8-inch LCD, built-in Bluetooth and 16GB of internal storage, all in a case 50 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than the original PSP-1000 -- a weight savings we're guessing is directly attributable to the loss of the UMD drive. That's right, the Go doesn't have a UMD drive -- games will instead load in through the Memory Stick Micro slot or over PlayStation Network. That's not the end of the classic PSP, though -- Sony says it will "live on." New PSP titles will be distributed through both UMD at retail and online simultaneously -- Sony's beefing up the desktop client and renaming it Media Go for easier access and syncing with Playstation Network media, but you'll be able to get PSN content directly from the Go as well. The PSP's music features have also been beefed up with a new auto-playlist feature called Sense Me, which sounds a lot like Pandora or iTunes Genius playlists, and there's a new video delivery service being rolled out.
Don't expect the loss of UMD to lower the price, though: the Go will be $249 when it launches on October 1 in North America and Europe and November 1 in Japan. Sony's showing demo videos with both black and white versions, but that's not confirmed yet -- we'll let you know.

Hey guys, It's Kaz Harai, not Haz Karai.
actually, it's kaz hirai.
fail soooooooo stupid its the same
@ Joe
I guess I'm a bit biased about Midnight Marauders because I love Electric Relaxation so much. It's one of my top 10 songs. Up there with Mass Appeal, C.R.E.A.M., Shook Ones Pt III, Sound Bwoy Bureill, and the list goes on.
Make sure Nintendo gets that memo.
Fucking comment system here is so flawed. Both of my previous comments were replys. And why does my picture keep changing? Engadget get your shit right. You would think that a tech site would have a much cleaner comment system. And what's up with the Engadget's recession Antidotes? Does anybody win those things? Post some fucking pictures or names of the pople who won. At least this way we can verify it's not just a scam to get more traffic and I would gladly promote your website more with peers. Engadget get your shit right!
So will the entire back catalog of UMD games be available for download too? Or will you not be able to play any old games if you buy a PSP Go?
I would say that it's extremely unlikely that they'll be able to port every single PSP game to the download service.
@absolutc
The proprietary card format makes total sense. It's their spec and they can add drm at a hardware level, which will cut down on piracy and if their smart about it(not holding my breath on this one) allow for cross-device communication. I for one am not to keen on buying games that are locked to a single unit and all that entails.
Buy a game only to find it sucks hard a$$ but your friend thinks is the second coming. Instead of being stuck with a lemon, you could actually make something of your investment (trade or sell) and use that to get something you actually want. It makes for increased software sales by lessening consumer trepidation.
Sony's biggest albatross right now with the PSP is its non-existent software sales. The devices themselves sell quite well with a relatively high consumer satisfaction rate. People really like their PSPs, for everything BUT playing games. They need to do what ever they can to change that dynamic, while ensuring they and the devs actually get paid at the same time.
boo...bad grammar: "if THEY ARE smart about it"
and yeah the pricing is ridiculous for a hand-held ($199 max)
At $199, this thing would be sex.
At $219, this thing would be overpriced sex.
At $249, it's anal sex. Without Lube.
Man, I'd love to get my hands in one of those.. But it seems Sony can't understand we're in the MIDDLE OF A FREAKIN ECONOMICAL RECESSION, and there's NO WAY I'll spent 250 bucks on a freakin toy. I've already have a regular psp-3000, and that shit costed me 150 bucks.. I mean, CMON!! That's not CHEAP, and when economical times are tough, you always look for the cheap stuff, right?
Wake the F*** up, Sony.. It's the ECONOMY, stupid.
Or I can spend another $50 to buy an xbox360 and just wait until I get home to play.
3.8" screen? Seriously? The PSP-1000-3000 have a 4.3" screen, not to mention that they look infinite times better.
It's like the GameBoy Micro of Sony's world.
Smaller, crappier, and more expensive.
Hey don't hate on the Micro. While fairly useless it was a nice little system with a kickass screen on it.
Really, Haz Kirai?
Looks alot like the debunked Sony Mylo..............hmmmmm
So wait, does this mean that you got to have a computer or PS3 in order to play games on this thing (since there is no way to get the games to the memory stick media)? Wow Sony, I hope you fail. Really hard.
Its $250 because the dollar isn't worth crap. We're down to 92 Yen per dollar now. Two years ago it was 125 Yen per dollar.
Wow you guys are fuck tards, quit bitching about 250, it does have a 16 GIG SSD pretty much. so your fools imo
I was anticipating this, but it's a real let-down: I was sure the small screen would be OLED, and the memory stick format is a real show-stopper. To let go of the UMD was wise, but the reason we have formats is so that everybody DOESN'T go their own way. I'm not going to buy a special SONY format just because SONY says so. SONY should know better! :(
Or $50 less if you can live with an Arcade.
Not even 802.11g? I know it won't matter much for a portable, but it's annoying enough having g devices on an n network, now a b device in 2009?
333mhz? Come on. The iPhone and iPod touch have over a 500mhz CPU, and they have the same Vid RAM and memory options (in fact the ipod touch comes in 32gb).
Soon the iPhone will own stuff like this. More and more games, including the Sims 3, Need For Speed and Brothers In Arms are available, and the iPhone does a lot more than just games, like calls, calculator, email and MP3.
Its also smaller and packs more devices into one. Admit it, no sony piece of crap will ever top your iPod in MP3 capabilities. And this just makes already small controls and screen smaller, which is obscene for all users.
-Davis
MHz aren't everything. Also the PSP has always had multimedia and internet capabilities.
Urgh! slider!
Worst Idea EVER!
have a look at every 6 month old wobbly phone Sony, its a crap idea! or have they done it so in 6 months time they can release the PSP wedge to stick under it to hold the screen up!
Then there is the placement of the analogue stick... wow, throw ergonomics out the window why don't you!
As already mentioned, missed the biggest complaint;
-Still tiny single cr@p analogue stick, surprised the first one didn't cause more lawsuits from permanent blisters.
-Still SLOW as Mo-L-A$$es CPU
-Still not enough memory to surf the net
-Still a low res screen
-Low-fi wifi that still limits Location free TV support.
Really WTF did they ADD other than Bluetooth (which is pointless for this thing) ? I know they took away the UMD, but that just means no legacy support. And with all that extra room from the missing UMD they added nothing. That doesn't bring back former PSP owners like myself who ditched the thing once it got surpassed by our smartphones many of which support MAME.
As also mentioned the dual analogue concept from years ago was a FAR better way to go, and might have brought people back, not this thing.
Rubbish!!
Sony - your seriously begining to p*** me off - Why don't they listen to what the users want??
2nd Analog stick for FPS goodness.
Extra Shoulder Buttons for more PS2 Conversion titles
Some way of a LOYAL EXISTING CUSTOMERS playing their Back Catalogue of UMD Games on the system.
What were they thinking!
this is fake, i was trying to search more info of that new psp on the web, but i dont find anything mmm thats really wierd dont you think the same ??? ii hate this people with fake products , what do you win doing this o more money for the visits to your web page.

This actually begs a couple of questions. Firstly, why in the world would you jack the price up for when Nintendo just released something to compete with the PSP-3000 and the SAME price point... Secondly, what is the max capacity you can put in the PSP-3000 with a Pro Duo card, and will the downloadable games be available for it as well? (sans pirating) I ask because, though I don't currently own a 3000, I've been thinking about getting one as my replacement media device since my Creative is going down... And seeing as how the UMD games take freaking forever to load the games, the downloadable games would be a huge plus. I'm not necessarily opposed to the pirating, but I prefer to at least TRY to do things the legal way first :)
One time I stuck my finger in my own ass and smelled it. It smelled like...........................................................................................(to see more of this article log on to www.pophilarity.com)
I don't like it. It just likes chinese SHANZHAI mp4 machine. Where is sony's ID?
Maybe sony really wants "go" over.
802.11b???????????
Did only one other person notice the 802.11 _b_ wifi? I sincerely hope that is a mistake...
Anyone want ANOTHER Mylo???
Wow ... PSP 2? I am thinking closer to PSP 1.5. What happened to a larger (touch) screen? And 16gb? For a gaming device, I don't think so. Especially one that relies on the HDD exclusively for playing games. What ever happened to Sony's innovation mentality? Well, I think that Sony just lost another PSP fan with this offering.
I mean really ... where is the WOW.
What the hell is this bullcrap! really? I have a hacked psp 2000. SO what? I don't need UMDS! i already can put games on my MS! no touch screen? No phone? what the hell! come on!
My psp 2000 has apps and games on the MS, please sony if you're going to make something new ( software and hardware wise) make it so that its NEW and that people don't already have it!
I really hope its MOD ABLE but even if it is
EPIC FAIL!
Nobody likes the price point
http://twitition.com/y3a72#
As long as they don't try and charge me again for PSP games I already own on UMD.
http://www.pspgoguide.com/
So i have to pay my owned games that i have on umd to play them with the GO?
So, if UMD is gone, you must download the games...
But that's gonna use up our bandwith.
So you can only buy like 20 games (in a month) if your downloadlimlit is 35Gb (in a month)
And with some people is only like 15Gb...
This is lame...
But I think that the PSPgo is still an improvement.
The design looks good, the size is way better and it's less heavy.
You can't even put a normal psp in your pocket...
And some cool games are coming out, that aren't on the 'old' PSP.
But I can still understand why some people are against it.
My Final Score:
3/5
If the PSPgo 2000 can play UMD's, then i'll buy it! (but probaly the design will be messed up, and it will be an PSP again with just 16Gb internal memory...)
Not to mention the way for paying.
How are 'kids' gonna pay for this if they are only downloadable?
With UMD's you just go in a store, choose a game and give some cash.
Now, there are gonna be all kinds of problems, because their parents
must pay for the games.
Sony wanted to make it easier, but they have made it only more difficult...
sony should have madea psp with touchscreen interface, a second analog where the start and select bottuns are, and a camera behind the slide up screen. I say all those who hate the psp go should start a fund raising project to build this concept idea and see how the fans favor it to the psp go.
I am amazed for Sony's improvement. Hopefully this good thing ( PSP Go ) will released as soon as possible and I can buy it later
well first off i dont see why the fuck are you all complaining about the price. First off im assuming all of you own a psp. so do you all remember how much the PSP1000 cost. I guess you dont, cuz it cost the same price as the PSP Go when it first released, $249.99 (US). So why dont you guys think for just a second, cuz when did the price drop for the psp1000, i believe it was a yr after the release to support the psp slim.
For those who are complaining about the internal hard drive, just stop. i agree with Aaron Martin Colby. 16GB is good enough so far, because if games need at most 500GB (with an exception of rpgs) then 16GB is fine. ok first off it isnt 16GB i know. Youll probably only get to use 14GB. So, for me thats 4 GB of music (im hoping its mpeg compatible so i can transfer my itunes) and 10GB of games. now if think 16GB is enough get a M2 card. you think its expensive now just wait for when the PSP GO comes out it will get cheaper or you can be like me and wait for Black Friday.
Yes, I do agree with you all that its an EPIC FAIL for not really haveing any improvements what so ever on the system itself. I thinking to myself hummm touch screen would be nice but what would be better is if Sony annouced that the PSP GO was actually a new hardcore sony smartphone (remember this is all in theory). so basically if youve been to E3 or comic con and actually used it what has improved is the spacing of the controls so it actually feels better. It almost feels like your holding a PS2 controller. The internal HDD is better than the crap that nintendo dsi has.
Some times im wondering though is sony freakin high or are they just sleeping on their ass. How are they not looking at the competition and wondering why nintendo always defeats them in handheld markets. the main reason why in my opinion nintendo alwasy defeats them is not because of the multimedia but because of the games. Now we all know nintendo is behind in multimedia they get slapped in the face by Sony and Microsoft. But the amount of original DS games nintendo produces compared to PSP games is remarkable. I mean i used to own one before i traded mine up. If the PSP GO ports all of the PSP games to downloadable formatt and create newer ones then this handheld system will be a success.
i am torn on this. i agree that the price is outrageus and it isnt giving you too great a features, but sony has given us a great original psp. i just never liked the screen in the middle. i also agree with the service that should be provided to scan a barcode on a umd and put on our psps. i also like the no umd thing. no more carrying around umds and a klunky psp. its just so portable. then there are the people who are uncofortable with putting thier credit or debit card on the internet to buy games, but sony gift cards will come out that allow you to pay at a 711 and be used at home on the computer. like apple does. also, i hate the idea of a touch screen. you touch the screen and its smudeged, meaning that you have to clean it more often. i think it will be strong in some places but weak in others, but thats like other products. and yes, most companies do make remakes of products, but sony is more obviouse. so i stand at a 50% like and 50% dislike. i hope i have helped others with thier wants in it or thier dislikes. just remember though, sony did make a great original psp that played games well, maybe this one will be just as good
