Video: DJ Hero rocks the Activision house party
To give its latest Hero franchise a solid berth, Activision lined up quite a special night last evening --you know you're in for a good party when the opening act is a percussion overload courtesy of Travis Barker and DJ AM. Once the rafters stopped vibrating, attendees were treated to the first glimpse of DJ Hero being played in public, and we caught it on video (embedded below), showing the new (and repetitive-stress inducing) scratch and fade mechanic. It looks to be familiar enough that Guitar Hero fans should be able to get into it, but different enough to deliver would-be mixers a challenge. Think you can carry the beat? We'll see when it ships in October.

looks cool
ohhhhh God.
Now your gonna have inner city youth claiming they are real DJ's.
It's no worse than suburban WoW guilders claiming they are musicians.
Really, really, inner city youth claiming their DJ's, just like outer suburbites claiming they are rockstars with guitar hero. Come on man, knock it off. Its another gimmick like guitar hero.
looks like crap
most of the real dj's i know were inner city youth.
your logic = fail.
i wanna know if i can use it to mix my own trax
the Hercules DJ setup is expensive at $300 :(
Shut up AVG, i played wow and i have been playing the bass (upright and electric) since 5th grade
@EJ
...so what? It's not law. Just a jab.
@darkstar
prolly not.
and hurcules sucks.
go get some grandmaster techs. :D
there only 600 a table. and well worth it.
I love the Rock Band games and GH is alright, but honestly, this game looks terrible.
Benny Banassi = win
DJ Here = not so much
Looks shit. The only good dj game ia Crackin' DJ. Everything else is stupified wannabe
I wish they had video of the Eminem & Jay-Z performance for the DJ Hero launch event. The two best rappers alive performing together one last time.
"best two rappers" ?
LOL!!!
It's okay Greg - I had the same reaction.
They are easily two of the best, if not the best living right now....
it's pretty much common consensus, unless you are one of those "indy" snobs who thinks anything mainstream is shit
why is it "one last time?"
they really are 2 of the best. period.
if you were an "indy" snob you wouldn't think anything but mainstream is shit...you would think anything but indy is shit, such as mainstream...
Soulja Boy is the greatest, wtf are you talking about
So are these mixes pre-made and we pretend like we're being an original DJ? Or do we actually get to BE ORIGINAL and choose what songs to mix and stuff? Cause I'm watching this and thinking that if we do get to mix it ourselves, it's gonna be damn hard to pull off anything like what that fella there just did.
But then if it's all pre-mixed and we just flick the thing to the beat, then that's incredibly lame. That's just another way of doing Guitar Hero, but with a different control and some dancier beats.
And what made you think they would go to something different from the cash cow they have today?
"That's just another way of doing Guitar Hero, but with a different control and some dancier beats."
Took the short bus to school, didya, kid?
You wouldn't be able to put beats together that quickly with only a few buttons so it would have been pre-mixed
BUT...
If they recorded the mix on layers, then each unique effect / song / scratch, etc would be a separate sound available to be launched by the controller. So if you scratch, you are scratching what was specifically noted to be at that timecode location, but you wouldn't be able to switch up the sound you are playing.
It would be super cool if this is the case, because there would be some wack sounds coming out of that thing if you didn't know how to DJ to begin with ;-) Straight up train wreck!
looks cool
this would be great with my zune!
...
@luis Rivera
what eric lol means by "..." is "shut up, you trolling prick."
I still love H.E.R, although fucking mainstream is killing my beloved hip hop.
Since when is Danny! mainstream?
I'm with you!
this isn't just hip hop (nice common ref btw), but it's like dance beats they play at clubs.. house music etc..
hip-hop has been way mainstream for like 20 years, get over yourself
I don't see how the notes have any correlation to the song that's playing.
This demo reminds me of Audiosurf, a game where the notes being spit out have nothing to do with the song at all.
Just so you know...turntables are not instruments, so whatever you see DJ's do has no affect on the "notes" played on the record. You'll be wanting Guitar Hero.
Obviously it was going to be different from a game where you were pretending to actually play the songs.
@Tes
Turntables aren't instruments? Please do some research before you blast us with your ignorance.. k thanks.
lol @ turntables that produce notes.
Either you are of another generation or live a life out in the sticks.
@ratspiff
Ok.... in your world iPods, walkmans and CD players are also instruments??
oh dear
And Plus, Audiosurf Goes by the tempo and beat of the song.
Audiosurf Is a Wonderful Game.
I was just thinking that it looks quite alot like audiosurf. damn good game though
@ poke:
Actually, turntables are just as much an instrument as a guitar, piano, or saxophone. It's a tool for making sounds. Just because it doesn't play a musical note does not mean it's not a musical instrument.
And, on second thought, if a part of a record is playing a note or chord, and you pitch it up or down, you can create melodies across two or more tables. I've seen it done live as a matter of fact.
So perhaps, turntables are the ultimate instrument because you can play a beat and melody at the same time, create totally new sounds, and not even have to read a single note of music.
@Bakari
I suppose that is debatable - playing reproduced sound that is manipulated or creating a variety of sounds yourself. I consider instruments to do the latter.
Not really into that anyway.
Find a video of the invisibl skratch piklz, it'll either pass over you entirely or blow your mind.
A turntable can be an instrument, when used in a specific way. You can also just bang on it and you have yourself a percussion instrument.
A turntable with a cross-fader can be manipulated to create percussive sounds, like most percussion instruments. By the incorrect "produce note/tone" rule, drums and wouldn't be instruments either.
...and next time I'll proofread my comment before I post. (drums and wouldn't be)
@Tes
Turntables can be used to manipulate sounds and create new ones as a musical instrument..
It's like saying a trumpet isn't an instrument, even though it manipulates your hot air (pun severely intended) to make new sounds.
and besides. wiki says it's an instrument, and as everyone knows, if it says it on the internet, it must be true.
How are turntables the ultimate instrument if they cant do anything without a recording of other instruments? A guitar can play a beat and melody at the same time and make strange new noises, a keyboard can obviously do that with great ease as well. A turntable is really quite limited compared to a number of other instruments.

It's short, since most of you philistines don't want to watch five minutes of scratching. A turntable can be an instrument.
@ Bakari
So by that theroy a chair is a weapon because you could hit someone with it.
A turntable is a deviced used for the playback of recorded sound. I would never go so far as to call it an instrument, that is not to say that it is not a tool for remixing music and anyway a turntable on its own isnt going to do much for you without a mixer.
shame, lame game.
