Video: DJ Hero rocks the Activision house party
To give its latest Hero franchise a solid berth, Activision lined up quite a special night last evening --you know you're in for a good party when the opening act is a percussion overload courtesy of Travis Barker and DJ AM. Once the rafters stopped vibrating, attendees were treated to the first glimpse of DJ Hero being played in public, and we caught it on video (embedded below), showing the new (and repetitive-stress inducing) scratch and fade mechanic. It looks to be familiar enough that Guitar Hero fans should be able to get into it, but different enough to deliver would-be mixers a challenge. Think you can carry the beat? We'll see when it ships in October.

How now, brown cow?
I hope they just merge it all at some point so we can finally have the Aerosmith/Run D.M.C. version of "Walk this Way". That would be awesome.
LOL!
This game is apparently supposed to have play modes where one person is on the turntable and a guitar and mic can be connected as well... that would work perfectly, no? I guess there'd be no drum controler, but I'm not even sure how they're reproduced on the actual track.
It happens to all music brands. Its just history repeating itself.
Travis Barker's a hack. No real chops, just speed. I wish everyone would get off his nut sack and look up to some real drummers.
Have you heard anything he's done besides Blink? Go look up some of the drum battles and solos he's done, then come back. Who would you suggest is a "real" drummer?
couldnt agree more... Neil Peart is the greatest F-ing drummer alive
Agreed, Neil Pert and Jon Bonham are f'ing legendary, just don't see how Barker is a hack...
This doesn't look all that fun to me... maybe its because DJ-esq music other than some techno is pretty lame to me
Well, those of us that like electronic music would probably prefer this to sitting around clicking a couple of buttons on a pretend guitar.
Turntablism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turntablism
To sum it up for you lazy ass know-it-alls: making music with turntables...
Eat it, bitches
Hey what about this nice DJ video game called Traktor pro ? http://www.native-instruments.com/newreleases/#/en/products/dj/traktor-pro/
Plus the pricing is just ridiculous.
Music game sales are down because no one wants to spend $200 for the latest Rock band game with PLASTIC instruments that will only work with one game on one system. It's not a smart investment.
This game here is $120. Just a ridiculous price for a plastic controller.
example of IDX / IIDX gone wrong -__-
despite my original thoughts, this looks pretty cool
KONAMI WILL SUE D:
nice boom boom pow is gonna be there YES!!!!!!
Hmmmm looks suspiciously like sonys beat master: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0
Looks alot like sonys new beat master: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0
You sir, fail. And I fail for clicking on that link.
This game is straight BS. Beatmania IIDX is currently on it's 17th, yes, 17th release in Japanese arcades.
all he does is press buttons on a platter. Anyone that's ever dj'd understands this makes no sense. I mean at least make put the buttons on the fader. The person who designed this game and controller does not get the mechanics of a dj. And these songs are really corny.
Guitar Hero does a good job simulating like the air guitar mechanics. DJ hero does not do a good job simulating DJing mechanics.
Why waste your time with this? Why wouldn't you just learn how to mix on a real turntable?
As i said in the previous post topic on DJ'ing. It's a 'manufactured' and phoney thing. Fyre182 didn't like my comment but then again it attacked his delusion of being a musician.
Sure I may not know much about the nitty gritty of 'DJ'ing' and yes it may be hard but that can be said about playing a washboard but you don't see too many bands using them do ya? DJ'ing as instrumentation is what 'medipack strewn' console gaming is to real challenging gaming. In much of console gaming the hardest thing is to actually die, you can even get through some levels with your eyes closed and just wild button bashing. I bet half the crowd would'nt even notice if a guy sucked at DJ'ing/scratching.
DJ'ing is bull. It's all about image over content. I'm not saying it doesn't have its place. I'm just saying that that place is quite a few levels below where shallow pop pop culture has elevated it to. My point being that DJ'ing is 'pretending' to play a real isntrument and now there is a perhipheral where you pretend to pretend?
DJ'ing is to playing real music is what playing guitar hero is to playing a real guitar. In other words, the whole DJ thing was the original dumbed down perhipheral.
if you choose to continue being a dimwit (blindly) . . .no one can really save you . . . quit being a "moving target" your original argument is not the same as what youre preaching now. Its a mitigated form of the reasoning you had previously.
- - knob twisting that was 99% form and . . . fashion - - - doesnt exactly exude the aura of claims of difficulty
yes and some really intresting bands actually play with washboards and I would definitely consider them musicians i.e. r2d2 (sp?) the entire washboard music festival, and a lot of country music
. . . isnt it sorta myopic and ignorant to disclude these people as musicians?
No I'm not upset because it delegitimizes "me" as a musician. I'm a college student at a very decent school . . just trying to earn money on the side. I don't believe I'm a musician. Honest-to-God Musicians make far more dinero than I will ever - have far more prestige - and more passion for their art.
The rap artist that walks into the club will always headline any event - - - not me.
Many influential bands of the 90s i.e. linkin park have djs. Actually almost all major concerts have djs. The olympic opening ceremony in athens was lead by tiesto. Most of the major mainstream trance tracks in europe are made by beat producers/djs. If you listen to any hip hop (if you throw out an entire genre of music such as hip hop as garbage then theres probably . . . no saving you . . . hip hop is very relavent to pop culture (that is definitely an undeniable point)
there are 4 things that make up hip hop quoth bboy planet "djs - garfitti (which is definitely art - look to banksy) - mcing - breaking "
i dont even know really where to start with your argument about console gaming . .. but like the other thread i'm sure a lot of people will think youre being ignorant again. . .
Seeing as how people go to concerts just to listen to certain djs - - i'm pretty sure theyre not completely useless
Here's another example of a popular mix dj doing something intresting with tracks dj am - - watch the link
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IO9tOL8hcxs
btw you can definitely tell when a dj messes up . . . its not all about scratching . . . the entire club will stop dancing - trust me this has happened many-a-time to many-a-dj
if you dont beat match things exactly on dot . . . you willl hear tracks that arent at the right speed and will be bouncing all over the place . . . IT IS VERY noticable to anyone.
The only reason why your radio music transitions smoothly or your club dance music transitions from song to song smoothly is because of the dj
without a dj it would be really really really hard to dance at a club. . . as songs would just stop mid song.
a good dj will be able to keep the beat going and be able to move a stagnant crowd that refuses to dance
THEY ARE VITAL to the survival of a club
just think about that buddy. . . trust me . . they are skilled and are important. . . and you probably have no idea what youre talking about . . .so just stop . . you've probably never been behind 2 decks . . . and if thats a wrong infrence then i'm sorry but right now you just sound like a very ignorant person . . .
@Peter and "My point being that DJ'ing is 'pretending' to play a real instrument and now there is a perhipheral where you pretend to pretend?"
You really have no clue what's going on behind the decks do you?
Not only is the DJ spinning records, he's also making sure samples are loaded on the "Exact" downbeat, that effects are triggered at that right moment in the song.
Oh, in the case of myself, making sure two records spinning at 170 beats a minute are always kept in perfect alignment for over a minute, while hitting buttons that load additional sounds "on time", dealing with people coming up to the DJ booth asking for song xyz, as you control the volume of each track so they don't over power eachother...
Also note that many times samples and effects are also triggered through midi controllers, which I'd assume you would also not call an instrument because they create sound themselves or something.
I don't know you, but that sounds like a musician to me...
well, there goes all respect for decent dj's like me. >
Satisfaction and Boom Boom Pow remix? I just don't want little kids thinking they could be DJ just because they can play this game. It's just like Guitar Hero T__T .
Harmonix did it better with FREQUENCY & AMPLITUDE....
Yawn Activision........
The red button was the Satisfaction Sample, the Green and Blue zig zagged lines appeared to be when you are supposed to cross fade, and the long fat lines look like when you are supposed to scratch. Although I dont think the platter turns does it?
He seemed to be missing quite a few of the notes so I would say the beat is pre mixed. If you do get any choice it would just be the short samples you lay over the top.
I sure hope the controls for this game are less sloppy than Beatmania. I've always loved the idea behind Beatmania but the controls, not so much.
@casey.
No i'm not a musician but i can understand why you thought I might be.
Again, I'm not denying that DJ'ing takes some skill. I'm just saying that it's pretty much being a technician in real time. Look a cocktails waiter is a guy who pours drinks. yes he went to bartender school and has some skill but that doesnt make him David Copperfield. He's just a cocktail dude and should accept it. The guy controling the sound and lighting at the console at the back of a concert doesnt get up and thrust him self all over the place ala Vanessa May in order to try to sex up his job. he's an engineer. He does a great job and using poetic licence you could even say he elevates his craft to an artform if he's really good but he's still just a technician.
A DJ is a technician and the fact that some of the knob twiddling is difficult and that he tries to fake out that he's a cool rocker doesnt fool us all.
Oh and dont complain, you know you love it when people come up to you while you are doing your 'set'.
