Apple iPhone 3.0 rumor roundup, part II: parental controls and sketchy shots

Moving on, spelunking through iTunes' inner workings has yielded more evidence that suggest Apple will introduce Nike+ support -- a feature arguably long overdue on the iPhone -- and some sort of FM radio tagging, though it's not clear whether it'll be used with an integrated tuner (a rumored feature) or simply as a memory-jogger when listening to another radio. Our money is on the former. Finally, we have what appear to be some screen shots of iPhone 3.0's new parental control system for applications in action, showing exactly what happens when you try to install some sick, lewd, objectionable material from the App Store -- check out our little gallery below for that.
[Thanks, ascen]

screw this im getting the pre
Troll...go beat your chest in the other post about the pre...
Fail troll,
go play with your web app phone
Oh, the irony!
Cheddar, an iPhone troll, angry when someone else trolls against his favorite device!
How does it feel now, fanboy!
Oh and by the way, hello moto, STFU. We're better than them. We don't need to counter-troll. Although I admit it IS funny.
@ShirkPower
You mean the iPhone
'cause you know.. it does web apps an' stuff..
Mike10010100: I'm confused...who are "we" and "them"?
no video ichat av for you then.
@Mike10010100
"We don't need to counter-troll"
You just did dumbass.
couldnt keep your face shut till wwdc could ya? ^_^
gotta spill it all out 2~3 days before pre
awwww wonder why :(
Mike, I am truly heartbroken...my life is unfulfilled now...the agony...
"The new iPhone is for everyone."
Wish that meant CDMA.
Ohhhh one of the other carriers? Well, y'know, we meant everyone on AT&T.
true, a carrier which doesnt need wifi in their devices is always a good selling point :)
"Ohhhh one of the other carriers? Well, y'know, we meant everyone on AT&T."
Yes, because the iPhone is only sold in the ignorant country of America.
@Patriks7:
You know what? I'm sick of this anti-American bullshit. You don't like you simply because I'm American? Fuck you then.
@Patriks7
"'Ohhhh one of the other carriers? Well, y'know, we meant everyone on AT&T.'
Yes, because the iPhone is only sold in the ignorant country of America."
Nothing quite like being called ignorant by someone that things the continent of America is a country.
I think you mean the ignorant country of the United states OF America. America is neither a country, nor ignorant, as it's a land mass.
Making broad sweeping judgments against a group of people based on limited interaction and no statistical evidence also makes you look like a tool.
Oooooh! Parental control and nike+ support! How exciting and revolutionary! I'm already brimming with anticipation of the 4th generation model where they add an "on" light at the top of the unit.
i'm pretty sure that the light is supposed to imply a front-facing camera, similar to the iSight on the macs... who knows if it's real though.
Dont forget the compass that will be built in, Because as you know we use compasses all the time
ohhh your so smart.
Its only the third generation you troll.
ATTN: ShirkPower:
You are = You're
@no: Contractions are beyond him.
(pretty sure that falls somewhere after trollish-fanboy on the education scale)
i know, really! i mean, jeez. My WinMo had Nike+ like, years ago. Oh wait, no it didn't.
wrabbit, why is it that people who obviously have nothing constructive to say always chime in with useless comments? Some people actually read articles and comments to get news, reviews, opinions, and predictions. That's why I'm here.
I happen to think adding Nike+ to the iPhone is a value-added feature. I currently travel with my iPhone and a Nano, because I run. And I use Nike+ to track those runs. If this rumor is true, it will be one less device to travel with. That's important to me.
My niece has an iPod Touch. My sister (her mom) is very careful about what goes on that device. Adding Parental Controls is very important to her.
Just because you don't use a "feature" doesn't mean it's not a "feature". I will personally never use a front-facing iChat camera, if it happens. Some people will. It doesn't mean I think it's not a great feature, but I won't use it.
Remember when sarcasm used to be funny and witty? Now it's lost it's luster. It's some geek in the basement of the science building trolling on some comment board.
Is the first word there "Shiny"?
I was thinking "tiny".
It looks like that picture is from apple.com. Notice the "Downloads" tab along with the other tabs.
Porn on the iPhone. This will come in handy...
Can't we just wait for WWDC and skip the rumour mill ? All this post his going to do is atract flame wars like Detroit Auto to Bankruptcy Judges.
LOL
im gonna go with the htc fortress!
That parental controls thing has been there for a while, since I got the message for downloading Amateur Surgeon. So, uh, bad Engadget! BAD!
ditto!
Hey! Has anyone else noticed the GREEN LIGHT near the receiver? Email/Message indicator light maybe?! Of course if this shot is even real...
That's the front facing camera (isight). Every Mac with it has a green indicator light to tell it's active.
"That's the front facing camera (isight)"
That's a pretty big claim. It could be for something else, but at this point, you could very well be right.
yes he's right
I thought that was a forward facing camera. Could be a green light though.
It could also mean that iPhone OS 3.0 will launch Monday and the device some time thereafter, but that would be very out of character for Apple.
Unless FCC already has their hands on the device, a new instant iPhone launch is extremely unlikely. In fact, I think the last time they had a "in stores today!" announcement was probably the original revealing of the aluminum iMac (iPods and such usually ship that day and are in within the week).
Never mind...the GREEN LIGHT is probably just a stuck pixel or a piece of dust stuck under the glass.
Like about 5 people have said the, the light is the camera indicator, retard!
I sold my iPhone the other day. I mean I'd rather be right than wrong about a new iPhone, anyways, when I called up an Apple Rep I'm friends with I asked him if I should buy an iPhone. He said "wait a few weeks". I don't know, but that sounds like somethings up. The pictures look good to me. If anything someone photoshopped that screen then used a camera phone, but it looks Apple-ish to me. We'll find out soon enough.
Nothing I care about, will it have un-restricted bluetooth and factory unlocked? , That, I would care about
As an iPhone owner, I am looking forward to getting some great (be it basic) functionality out of the 3.0 update. If I look forward to a new device, I think I am going to set myself up for disappointment.
Pre sure does look purdy!
Damn, that really is a front-facing iSight! :-)
Wow, this is quite an exciting pic. It shows a totally different looking iPhone model without the chrome bezel, a green-lit LED in the front, a raise earpiece (?) near the top and some indistinguishable icons near the carrier icon. Very, very interesting.
I think it is called 2009 phone as well .
http://www.zahipedia.com/2009/05/27/new-apple-iphone-2009-with-4g-technology/
Like no other phone out there, for 3 years now Apple will have taken a great phone and made it better. There will be people that have the 1st and 2nd gen phones that use the 3.0 software (along with iPod Touch owners) without having to upgrade their hardware. There are very few phones made by Nokia, RIMM, Palm, HTC, LG, etc. that people are still using two+ years later and still have the "current" model.
Yes you cannot turn a 1st gen into 3G and no it doesn't have GPS but you still get 95% of the functionality without having to buy a thing (Touch owners aside). No other company has done what Apple has done for their customers.
Add in the App Store and these are the things that continue to separate Apple from every other Company. Say what you want about the Pre/Bold/Whatever, they are still years behind the iPhone in the total experience (hell some, i.e., pre, are simply rumor and speculation...let's see how the pre does before we go "killing" off the iPhone...not going to happen). Sure others have pieces of the Apple experience but they don't have the total package and quite frankly I don't think they every will because the others don't "get it" the way Apple does.
Flame away if you so choose, but the facts stand up for themselves regardless of whether you believe me.
agreed
I'm not going to flame, but it has to be said - you have to get out there and look at what everyone else is doing rather than assuming the world begins and ends with Apple.
FM Tagging? Zune had it first (not to mention integrated FM radio - which as I recall, Engadget poo-poohed as being something no one needed or wanted).
Front facing camera? Uh.. my WiMo phone has that. Lots of phones have that. It wasn't useful on the iPhone because until now, it couldn't do video chat or MMS - which lots of other phones could.
Audio recorder? Please. I was doing that with my WiMo phone 5 years ago.
OLED screen? A number of PMPs and phone have that and the Zune HD kind of got there first.
And so on.
Don't get me wrong - I'm sure iPhone 3 will be a really nice phone and will almost certainly shoot ahead in a few areas - but in a very real sense, the iPhone has been playing catch-up with everyone else in a lot of basics like - yes - cut and paste, MMS, video chat and so on.
As for the App Store - well, definitely a good idea, but way overhyped even based on analysis by Engadget and Gizmodo.
@Jeff...App Store overhyped...are you serious, no really are you serious?
Can you say iTunes for smartphones?!?!?!? Everyone is trying to copy what Apple has created with the App Store...if it were hype this would not be happening. Sure others have made attempts at putting apps on phones but they went nowhere in comparison to what Apple has been able to do. 1 billion downloads in 9 months, 40,000+ apps.
None of the competition can match those numbers...NONE.
I never said Apple was first with all the features but they have done a better job of bringing everything together to provide the user with a seamless experience from purchase to continued usage.
I have been using cell phones since the days of the "bag phones" and I have never enjoyed using a phone more than my iPhone. I have tried other smartphones (LG Dare, Storm, Bold) and none are as simple and intuitive as the iPhone. Sure the iPhone is not the only smartphone out there, some prefer other phones with menu after menu and random features, I don't see anything replacing my iPhone for the foreseeable future.
Where is those glowing "apple"?
That does look to be a iSight front facing camera, and it does coincide with all the other rumors, that the earpiece was going up to make room for the camera. It would be something if it launches on June 8th.
where's the percentage next to the battery life in the photo? I don't know, might be a fake
i seen in the new iphone one how it says check the availability of your carrier so that might mean its gonna be on more carriers and theres the green light that might mean front facing camera
Black bezel - bleh. I likes my chrome. Brushed metal would be even better. But black?
Can we get some induction charging goodness thrown in too for good measure! Just to stick one to the Pre Fan Boys
You don't want induction charging on an iPhone, trust me. There will be issues with the Pre's that use it. It has already been covered on the internet already the problems with induction charging, and how unknown it was how Palm was going to deal with the issues. The issues are, as mentioned partially by Engadget: 1) chargin through induction is very very slow, and you do not get any sort of fast charge as you would with wired charging; 2) the phone between the coils gets very hot, hot enough to cause burns and deform plastic; 3) batteries will degrade very quickly with heat, and having the induction coil next to the battery in this case, heating it up as much as it will, will kill the battery quick. I bet we will hear of some large issues from those who use the touchstone (e.g. fires, melted/deformed cases, battery not charging, etc).
I think u guys r a lil too smart just simple brains apple is letting at these pics and rumors so people that are thinking of getting the pre on launch date will take the excitement out of it and make them hole on for a another 2 days with gives them a bigger chance so just maybe look at the whole pic the way what apple trying to do!!!
Does Apple really going to put an FM tuner in the next iPhone? That doesn't sound like a feature they would add. I mean one can already stream last.fm for free.
Apple, all I ask is sell the iPhone unlocked. My next phone would have to have camera with auto-focus, geo-tagging, GPS, ability to have a twitter client, and unlocked (if locked, give it to me for free, I'm not paying for a locked phone). Nokia E series and upcoming SE Cybershot phones look pretty interesting.
They said "FM transmitter", not FM tuner. FM is used for more than music, short-range data is also transmitted over FM. It's less secure and easier to implement than Bluetooth, but can be advantageous. The Nike+ Run shoe thing talks to the receiver over FM. Polar heart rate bands talk to gym equipment over FM. I think that's the type of thing the FM transceiver would be used for.
Of course, it would be nice to get a little NPR without going online...
Every single time apple announced a new product that would be available for placing orders that same day they've phrased the availability as though you could really get one right away.
If they learned anything from their 3g it's that people loved the 1st gen's immediate available and self-registration, and that they will not be pleased at being forced to activate and everything, waiting in long lines for months.
Furthermore the hardware additions rumored are less dramatic than last year's, lending credence to a large stock of available devices for launch.
And finally, "available today" could still be like many other products, just a way of misleadingly saying that you can go place your order today, which will have a subtitle of "Ships in 1-2 weeks" or similar.
The iPhone on the image has a time of "10:32"; whilst all other iPhone, Mac and iPod has the characteristic time of '09:42'.
I'd say FAKE.
if you see the picture, can you see the iphone has a green light at the top? does that mean it will have another camera facing you? (isight?) CHECK IT OUT CAREFULLY
Couldn't the FM radio thingy possibly be real time traffic reporting?
here are some more juicy details on the new iPhone!
http://www.l337tech.com/news/new-iphone-3rd-generation-with-iphone-os-30-available-in-june/
I have a 1G iPhone and I'm hoping the new iPhone wont be glued to ATT's plans. I want to buy one from Apple without contract bullcrap from ATT. I want a 3G, but I cant get one because I don't have ATT and I don't want to pay $599 for one without a contract. Hopefully the new one wont be like that and they might have realized that not opening it up lead to a decrease in sales.
That's SuicideGirls app incase anyone is wondering...so now go download it and fap fap fap
There are so many rumors over the net for iPhone 4g or nextgen iPhone for WWDC 2009. this one looked more logical http://www.taranfx.com/blog/?p=1050
BTW, Its not an iPhone 4g. The only carrier to start rolling out their 4g network is Sprint, who is going the WiMAX (CDMA) route. Both AT&T and Verizon will be rolling out their LTE (GSM) 4g networks over the next few years. And don't even count on T-Mobile rolling that out for another 10, seeing as how they can't manage to roll out their 3g network completely.
Ya know, I love my BB Storm (it has it's problems, don't get me wrong, and I love easy the easy integration into my School email). And by no means, do I like to or want to flame. The iPhone is a nice device, save for a few things. Especially how it put the hardware game back in the manufacturers court (here in the US anyway), rather than in the Service Providers hands. It's sleek, decently designed (gets points off for being a scratch magnet), and has great functionality. But honestly, it has it's problems, after all until 3.0 It couldn't do what even basic phones can, MMS. Also, as a device that touts itself as not only a phone but a music player, to not include A2DP (stereo bluetooth) until now, is utterly disappointing.
Ok, I guess I'll clear this up. The 1st Gen iPhone was an EDGE network phone (GSM 2.5g). The iPhone 3g was a GSM 3g phone, not the 3rd Gen, it was a 2nd Gen. The new iPhone coming out shortly is the 3rd Gen one working on the GSM 3g network.
Obviously people still don't get that, 3G != 3rd Gen phone.
Iphone sucks at&t sucks even worse. App store wow who cares. So you gon put 50,000 apps on your phone. So if the iphone gets copy and paste it puts it ahead of every phone on the market please get a life nerds keep your shitty iphone you get what you deserve an inferior product.
It would be Apple's smartest, most ingenious market ploy ever if they release the phone tomorrow - For some people, just the wait is enough to settle for the Pre. If Apple announces and releases a phone the day after Palm's big Pre Birthday, then Apple will have a throttlehold on palm. Sure, it will be throat slashing at your nearby Apple Store, but it would throttle the Pre and cut it's sales from basically it's launch.
There's also the possibility that that is a picture of an iPhone 3G with a front page announcing 3.0 is released "Today" and the phone is photoshopped to have a green light - (Why would the light be on if the camera isn't active anyway???)
It is highly unlikely Apple will release a final build of 3.0 until they release the 3rd Gen iPhone - All I have to say is, whatever is being announced tomorrow - whether it's 3.0 w/o a 3rd Gen or a 3rd Gen for sale the same day - Apple is being abnormal, and it only fits they'd act differently w/o Steve. Maybe it's an Apple Revolution.
