NEC CRV43: 43-inches of curve on sale July
See that? All 43-inches of this curved NEC monitor with 2880x900 pixel resolution can be yours in July. Ok, it'll cost you $7,999 but it's, well, it's curved! The CRV43, first spotted at CES in January 2008 and again on video in 2009 (where it was expected to cost $6,499), measures in with a 200 nits brightness rating, 10,000:1 contrast, 0.02ms "Rapid Response," covers 99.3% of the Adobe RGB color gamut, and packs at least one USB2.0 jack and DVI-D and HDMI 1.3 connectors. Unfortunately, gaming is not listed amongst its targeted uses so you'll be on your own to find a release supporting the CRV43's 32:10 aspect ratio. Unfortunately, there's some junk in that trunk so deftly hidden by the glamor shot above. See what we mean after the break.

This is actually the display used by the kids in Toys when they were playing the shoot 'em up game... y'know, the one that was REAL!
A little bit on the low resolution side of things, isn't it?
Then the companies will compete on which one is covering more curve area around you, until they eventually form a complete circle 360 degrees and then they'll go spiral starting from your floor towards the ceiling.
Explain to me why that would NOT be badass...
@squeeg: The only nonbadassery reason I can think of it would be the potential difficulty of getting inside a floor-to-ceiling spiral screen. (OTOH, if it was constructed/installed around the user, I'd be fairly content to stay inside it, but showering could cause nonbadassery.)
Can it display Crysis 2 ?
OMG it consumes 200W lol....
and 68.7 billion colors? wow
You know what I still don't get. The monitor claims to reproduce 68.7 billion colors. Last time I checked my eyes could only differentiate between about 10 million colors. So I mean unless they're main target demographic is bees (who can see ultraviolet lightwaves), I don't see how all those colors really help me. I mean sure, it's a BILLION colors, but I'm not a failing car manufacturer, so the point in moot.
you counted 10000000 colours? :p
You mean you haven't? =D
This looks so sweet in the press shots, I wonder if it would even fit on my desk, much less look nice.
I'm pretty sure most games won't support that resolution. I imagine you can stretch lower resolution game and totally skew it into ugliness if you want. Contrast ratio is also pretty low compared to new LCD's used for Graphic Design. Can't really imagine what it is good for?
Hardware comes first, software support will follow. The only reason for such device is gaming. Flight simulator, anyone?
good luck finding a wallpaper of that resolution.
Making engadget remember new password... I mean, this monitor rules!
Cool concept but really horrible in real life. Unless it's changed ridiculously since CES, the screen is too dim, color is bad, and there are horrible seams where the three projections meet. For a screen that huge the resolution isn't great either.
Don't forget, your applications and games aren't made to take the curve into account, so it ends up looking distorted.
Maybe someday there will be a nice curved screen, but this isn't it.
This seems like a technological dead end. I mean it's DLP... Isn't that kinda a step back? This might be more interesting in 3 years with less curve to the screen higher vertical resolution and OLED.
yup
I like curves.
This is a nice idea...
But I think I would rather get myself 3 or 4 27" LCD screens
How could this be considered anything near "innovation" ? They're so on the late on that one. Big-diag flexible OLED screens are just a few years away and we are already laughing at this. But this isn't even a flat panel ! I guess they didn't really have a choice: unveil it this year or ... forget it.
( yeah, failed innovation does bother me )
( and 0.02ms response time ? come on ! )
But it's curved, it's curved! Did I mention it's curved? Talk about the ultimate status symbol at work :-)
Mark
My CRT I got in 1994 was that thick AND curved! Though.. the curve went the opposite way and was more of just a bubble.... but.. who's gonna notice?
want.
same..
Count me in!
45lbs isn't too bad. The 24" Sony FW900 CRT weighed around 90.
Reminds me of that vaporware Libermann's monitor scam a couple years back.
The word Bukkushan comes to mind.
The resolution is kind of lame, as is the pricepoint. I currently use a setup of 3x 19" Eizo Displays running via Matrox TripleHead2Go Digital. I had to pay about 1000-1200$ for the box + the screens. Got 43" too, as well as a 3840x1024 resolution. The only downpoint is the displays bezels. On the other hand, if you can live with it, it can save you a WHOLE lot of money. But have a look for yourself.

btw... it's mainly for working purposes NOT for gaming (I game on only one of these screens or at my TV set) so the bezels don't really matter...
But can it run Crysis?
900? Pfft
its basically 3 monitors stuck together and this:
http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/
no big deal. Most games that support 16:10 widescreen will support it either through a "ini" change or directly in the game menu's.
Looks to damn big though to be usefull, if i wanted something the size of an old school 32inch CRT TV on my desk i would put one there.
Other than that looks allright, the resoloution totally sucks, would of expected something in the *x1080 region rather than 900. Atleast this way you could of played back 1080p content with bars down the sides. Might make it worthwhile.
Interesting
This is lame. I've got a 5 monitor setup at work already. 4 x 19" and 1 x 17". One monitor is in portrait mode. This give me a horizontal resolution of 6144 (1280 * 4 + 1024) and my vertical resolution being 1024 on all the landscape monitors. Why would I want something like this?
Sonic Light: Widescreen. that was my favourite wallpaper for the longest time.
you can find it here:

Wasn't this thing on display a year or two ago? As a gaming monitor? Wasn't it branded Alienware or something?
2880x900 across this size also makes it practical to run most modern games at a reasonable detail level without breaking the bank on video card upgrades every three weeks, but then again, if you can afford this monitor, you can probably do the video card thing.
Yeah it was. Looks like the exact same hardware. http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/video-alienwares-curved-display-caters-to-gamers/
why does this thing cost so much? i though dlp survived only by being cheaper....why not just hook 6 or so of these guys http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16889248030&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Rear+Projection+TV-_-MITSUBISHI+DIGITAL+ELECTRONICS-_-89248030 up to your computer for the same price.....
alienware? yes.
Is this resolution supported by any graphics card? I thought most were 2560 x 1600
See that?!?
wow..haha thats interesting..I had thought of this idea a few months back but i sure didn't think someone else would make it a reality so soon..i did however plan it to curve the other way and to have a more round shape..so the picture looks like it curves off the lcd if you get what i mean.I like it though,it would be better if it was thinner.
I think I wet myself! Come to http://digitalXushi.com (we have cookies!)
Finally!
I get to watch wide-screen films with borders down the sides :)
Forget this... Do what I did...
I have a 28" HannsG for desktop CS3/4 editing and gaming galore! Counter Strike Source, Crysis and WoW looking brillant when pumped through a GTX295 OC'd as well as an I7920 at 4.2 Ghz on Vista64Premium.
That said, for BIG gaming, I take her downstairs and hook up to the Panasonic PT-AX200U coming in on the same DVI-HDMI cable and running a beautiful 96" wide pull down DaLite screen as well as hooking up the X-Fi Fatal1ty to the Onkyo 7.1 paired with it.
You want gaming? Try fraggin people with this baby and pumped through an Onkyo with Audyssey 2EQ enabled... HOLY SCHNIKES!!!
The projector can be had for $929.00 (incl free s&h, no tax) and used for Blu-Ray movies in their full glory. Add an old video camera and pump the video feed through my laptop running Visual Jockey which is now FREE and have yourself an AWESOME party... kids love it too!!!
