Remember that Miles Electric sedan we heard about last month? Yeah, well it's coming to California's shores next year. An all new car company, doing business under the name of Coda Automotive, has just been formed in order to bring said vehicle into production. The all-electric, four-door Coda won't break down any walls in the design department, but the $45,000 (mid-$30,000s after a $7,500 Federal tax credit and additional state incentives) whip sure sounds promising as an eco-friendly daily driver. Reportedly, it'll cruise for around 90 to 120 miles without needing a recharge, and the batteries within can be charged enough for a 40-mile commute in two hours. It'll also ship with a navigation system, Bluetooth, iPod support and power everything as standard, but sadly, there's no telling when it'll be sold outside of the The Golden State. Video promo is after the break.
Definitely got design cues from all over the place. Strange looking mix. EV mfrs need to stop trying so hard to make their cars look "futuristic". Grill-less front ends were cool(ish) back in the '80s, and it's not a style that deserves to be resurrected.
You're missing the point. This vehicle requires no gas and very little maintenance. If you factor in those costs, and the fact that Mercedes cars are more expensive than average to maintain, you're looking at a much higher cost than mid $30,000's for a C300 over the lifetime of the vehicle.
This simply is a crowdsmobile with all perks of today's design rules in this area.
It's not just the electric cars who suffer in the design department. Have you seen the urban "oil burners" of today? They are, for a lack of better word, fugly. It's like a rule of thumb for all the urban cruisers. It looks like the contemporary car designers seem to maintain a genuine hatred towards the mid-range cars they design & people they design them for...
Not a fan of the lack of front grill... but overall, it looks like a simple family sedan... not what you would expect for $45,000. I would rather get the Tesla Model S for $50,000...
Exactly my thoughts. Styling is bland but acceptable to be all electric. Was actually excited until I saw the price. The Telsa is better, though about 20% more expensive, but a (slightly?) more stable company. A 20% difference is enough for some people to get the Coda instead. What I like about the Tesla over the Coda (besides the style and gadgets, ha) is that for an additional $xxxx I can upgrade the batteries and have enough range to actually take it on road weekend road trips and not have to have two cars or get a rental.
the styling on this thing is very uninspiring..... the side profile pic looks almost exactly like my 1998 Honda Civic... did honda sell the blueprints to them!?!?
As a student of the English language, I'm interested to see the many wonderful new swear words and curses that will be invented by all-electric vehicle drivers over the next few years.
It'll be especially fun to record the rants and raves of those who, appreciating the delicious irony of passing 5 or 6 gas stations as their capacitance gauge goes from 10% to 0%, come to a halt and pass on their "gasoline savings" to "Mervin's We Haul All" to tow them the final 4 miles to their home for a recharge...
Actually, I just want to be there to point and laugh when it happens... Stick with a plug-in hybrid...
Really? Only 120 mile range? Maybe they should have put the car in a smaller state first. Perhaps Rhode Island, where 120 miles is somewhat significant.
120 Mile range is perfect for average commuting, or taking kids to school, running to the mall, or riding up to gas stations just to gloat about how your car doesn't need gas (but then you get hit with your massive electric bill).
Exactly.. Who the hell looked that various designs and thought, "YES, that's the one." Sort of a throwback to the old econoboxes, except you didn't pay much back then for an ugly car and it didn't matter because everyone's econobox was equally uninspiring.
it remainds me of the hondas of the late 80 early 90's..you can add almost every Japanese car that era lol. also 120 not great if you have to travel from state to stay(MA to NY and back my summer commute) but I do welcome this freedom from OPEC. I just hope this car can accomodate a guy of my height(6'6")
It's amazing that small startup companies are able to pop these electric models out in a few years, while GM is dragging its feet with the elusive Volt (with pathetic 40 miles range I should mention). That's despite having the car that could go 150 miles+ on one charge back in 1995.
car companies and oil companies are in bed together... im really not a conspiracy theorist, but you should see the movie "Who Killed The Electric Car".... very enlightening!!!!
How many times does it have to be mentioned that the Volt is closer to a plug-in hybrid than an electric car? Unlike the car pictured above, it also has a gas engine.
Privet, you apparently watched the Dave Letterman show where he niavely spewed nonsense about the Volt. You then missed the episode where he ate crow after his idiocy was explained to him.
Get two things fixed: 1) At least 250miles between charges; more if you want widespread adoption. Or, put in a means to use alternate fuel if you run out. 2) Faster charging. Technology's already there to charge large-capacity batteries in seconds; this could be used in the fashion of Gas Stations.
Until then, it's just a grand-scale toy. Expensive, but still a toy.
Guarantee ya that the sheetmetal/whatever is a Suzuki Forenza. It is nearly identical in every way to a Suzuki Forenza. Suzuki by the way is partially owned by Chevy and this video mentioned "partners". I am not saying anything jus drawing some totally unfounded conclusions.
Come back when to me when the price tag goes at $20,000. I am not paying more than $15,000 for such a short commute car. Poor environment! Profits and greed will never give you a break ;-(
I'll believe it once they go on sale. It's vaporware until then. There's just been too many companies making these sorts of announcements and then never really coming out with anything.
I've been told I am stange and diffrent, so this will come as no shock to me. I actually like the design of this car, its so odd and diffrent that its something I would like. the price on the other hand is not me. - I am so tired of sending my money to the Middle Ease each time I buy gas. I must say most ppl I know from Iran (I know about twelve of them form the racques club) truly hate american ways and truly believe iran is simply the best country in the workd, which make me wonder why the hell are they in america. I don't know too many american that would listen to some of these guys and say or do nothing.
for 45k its stupid my integra got 40 and only 150 mile and a charge and what it take 8 hours to charge the battres i would think for 45 k u would go more than 150 miles
Large scale power plants are magnitudes more efficient than even the most efficient internal combustion engine. The adoption of rechargable electric cars will spur the widespread upgrade of our energy grid into the twenty first century, increase the energy efficiency of our nation, and remove our dependence on oil. Granted, the technology and culture is still yet to hit the cusp of change (Battery technology just nearing the pervasive cultural requirements of our highway based cities, still shunning nuclear power, etc.)
The 120 mile range makes this useless for long commutes, so gas engines (or fuel cells if that catches on) will be needed until battery technology improves to either drastically increase the range or allow for rapid charges. This is just fine for short commutes and city driving though.
so what happens when you have to turn the A/C on, or the heater on in the winter time? There's no engine to pull heat off of... so I assume you're talking about electrical heating elements... how long will it run then? and being all batteries, will it function very long or at all in freezing temperatures?
You mean to tell me that this little car company is coming out with an all electric car with a 150mpc range for this price? GM should be ASHAMED of themselves for not being able to do better with their precious little Volt.
Hideous. Reminds me of those Chinese cars... maybe they have taken one of them and made it electric? They didn't even mention if it has airbags. I'd rather buy a small modern diesel... costs less, probably is safer...
Eh, pure electric vehicles won't really be viable other than as commuter cars and local fleet vehicles until they get new battery technology that can be charged in minutes rather than hours. MIT developed some I believe, just need to wait for it to come down the pipeline to commercial products. Of course the infrastructure to handle the huge power draws of charging so quickly would also need to be built too. For right now, a hybrid (preferably plug-in) is just the more practical choice for people that aren't so rich that they can afford multiple cars for multiple purposes.
If I wanted a commuter vehicle, I'd get a scooter. The difference in price will help me save money for when more practical EVs are ready and the infrastructure to support them has been built.
If it was around $25k or $30k I might think about it. However this is a pretty high price. I agree the looks are alright and they don't bother me that much. I think I should be getting 400 miles per charge at that price.
OMG, Who designed this thing? This is like a slap on the face of the consumer who's already spoiled with the looks of Aptera/Tesla S/Fisker. If they at least learned form Toyota Prius or Honda Insight... I know it takes lots of cash for any start-up, but cutting corners on the design and aerodynamics? $40K for 120/charge?
After rebates this car will actually be available at 32 k, which is more affordable. Also unlike the Tesla this car seats more people and does not contain batteries that have the potential of blowing up. And unlike the Volt, which so far does not have any battery system, it stands a better chance of acctually being produced. I say bring it on!
I am read the whole article and I thought it completely desirable for any individual. I hope the awareness are spread all around the world. +~~~~~~~~~ Sean Cruz suzuki grand vitara

I'd rather buy a C300 for that money. thanks.
Judging by the body lines..
It looks like Volvo and Hyundai met, and had a baby.
Then Honda and Suzuki met, and had a baby.
And by some miracle, those two babies met, and f*&^%!
This car is the result.

The Tesla S is only around 50k AFTER the tax break. ITs closer to 60k in price.
the styling on this thing is very uninspiring..... the side profile pic looks almost exactly like my 1998 Honda Civic... did honda sell the blueprints to them!?!?
When are they saying the Tesla S will be available? Make sure you build in some extra time...
If this goes on sale next year, you can buy it, and have a while before you will be able to get your hands on the Tesla S.

Ah, old school ugly.
Perhaps if they declare bankruptcy, they can get a $100 billion windfall from "the government" as well!
i don't mind not haveing a front grill but this one looks like it has been made to shut up
The front design is horrible!!
Exactly.. Who the hell looked that various designs and thought, "YES, that's the one." Sort of a throwback to the old econoboxes, except you didn't pay much back then for an ugly car and it didn't matter because everyone's econobox was equally uninspiring.
Why couldn't someone just fly to California, purchase the vehicle, then drive it..... oh right...120 mile range for $30k minimum.
Fail.

40 miles is electric only. After that you aren't stranded like you would be with this vehicle.
Privet, you apparently watched the Dave Letterman show where he niavely spewed nonsense about the Volt. You then missed the episode where he ate crow after his idiocy was explained to him.

Hm. I think it looks like a Euro-Ford of some sort, particularly in the back.

So instead of oil, I can burn coal? Unfortunately the efficiencies just aren't there yet.
Large scale power plants are magnitudes more efficient than even the most efficient internal combustion engine. OMFG, Electric Dacia Logan Sedan!
Why on earth everyone making this kind of cars feels the need to put LED style lamps
Because LED lights use a very low voltage and just a few milliamps? Plus, there are current laws saying they need to have daytime running lights.
You don't need a big front grill on an electric car. In fact, this will be more aerodynamic and will catch less air.
It doesn't look that bad, I just think it should be $25,000.
The 120 mile range makes this useless for long commutes, so gas engines (or fuel cells if that catches on) will be needed until battery technology improves to either drastically increase the range or allow for rapid charges. This is just fine for short commutes and city driving though.
