Palm Pre goes on sale to a select, drenched few
We just got to witness history, folks: Alfredo Rodriguez waited an hour in the miserable New York rain for the privilege of snapping up his Sprint store's very first retail Pre at this evening's invite-only Premier customers event. The man paid in cold hard cash, and after a tedious 40 minute purchase process that involved a bit of activation, some nice tutorials, a quick address book sideload from his old Touch Diamond and whole lot of peripheral upsell, Alfredo was one of the world's first satisfied Pre customers. The last time we saw him Alfredo was still playing with his new phone, and gives the device two thumbs up. He's particularly digging the keyboard -- what Touch Diamond user wouldn't? -- and the flip-up mirror. Word on the street was that there were about 80 units available at the store, but while we couldn't squeeze an official number out of Sprint, they did confirm that they'll have units available for the launch tomorrow as well. Be sure to let us know how your own local launch treats you!
Update: We've swung by the Chicago launch on LaSalle Street to scope out the scene -- follow the break for the eye candy!
Update 2: There's now also a video from the New York store after the break.
6PM rolled around in Chicago's scenic Loop district without a lot of fanfare -- just the usual array of suits shuffling off for another beer thirty after five days of hittin' hit hard in the city's law offices and trading floors. There were probably three to four Sprint sales reps and other miscellaneous company employees for every individual waiting in line when the flag dropped.
Shortly before 6, employees lined up the few soon-to-be Pre owners for a photo op -- we wouldn't necessarily call it a "staged line," but it was made clear on no uncertain terms that Sprint wanted a picture of people lined up for the phone. There was a noticeable dearth of what we'd call "Sprint" or "Palm fanboys" -- just young, business-casual men and women patiently waiting to pick up a new phone.
Inside, the store was very low-key, and Sprint spokespeople told us they didn't expect it to pick up. Apparently, only about a thousand invites were sent out across all ten stores running special hours this evening, so if you figure 30 percent of those folks show up, that's only 30 per store. Sprint's saying that they consider tonight a dress rehearsal -- they're using the Premier event to make sure that they've got their I's dotted, their T's crossed, and everything is working smoothly.

The "celebrities" advertised for this evening's event were a pair of Bears players, Richard Dent and Matt Forte. Unfortunately for Sprint, Mr. Forte pulled a Michael Bay, throwing out a little jab in the carrier's direction: "I would get this but, you know, Sprint network." He was quick to compare the Pre to the iPhone, too; actually, he said it was "just like the iPhone," which we'd say is a bit of a stretch. Just check out that card interface, Matt! And the keyboard!
All Sprint stores have been upgraded to get ready for the Pre's launch -- every single one -- with new kiosks, LCD displays, and specially-designed anti-theft holsters with Touchstone bases. Very cool, especially since it'd be difficult to show off the Touchstone any other way in-store.
Naturally, Engadget came packing with... well, phones. Lots of them. One of the valets (yes, Sprint was valeting cars) approached us while we were using a G1 and asked whether that was the device the event was for; we explained it wasn't, pulled out our Pre, and his eyes popped. He'd never seen either device before, and was instantly taken aback by how beautiful the Pre was, both inside and out, compared to T-Mobile's headline offering. It was a pretty telling moment for us -- a promising sign for Palm, and an early warning for HTC and T-Mobile that they'll have to step up their design game if they want to continue to play in this rare air.

That is happy in NYC.
Ok. Writting from traffic on my new PRE!!! Went to DC event with no invite, welcomed like king. Sipped on some coke, ate creampuffs while they activated the cpre. 10 mins I was out the door. Been molesting its sexy smooth body ever since. Guy selling to me asked for a 5 star rating, I asked him where to jot down 6.
This repeat posting is starting to remind me of the I'm a PC, and I'm a Mac commercial where they are in the group meeting and the other PC hasn't had a glitch in two days.. hasn't had a glitch in two days... hasn't had a glitch in ... lol
BUT...
HOW
MUCH
DOES
IT
COST
WITHOUT
A
CONTRACT?
You guys are killing me. Nobody knows yet? I've heard $300 to $1000. What's the damage? Will my 7 bills in my wallet get me there tomorrow morning?
I'd have to find the thread for you here but Engadget posted that it was going to be $549 off contract from the sprint store.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/19/palm-pre-to-run-549-off-contract/
I know people like the idea of getting a phone without a contract. But does anyone ever do it? Especially these expensive smartphones?
And... if you pay $849 to get a Palm Pre with the freedom of not being locked into a contract... so you can switch carriers any time you want... YOU CAN'T... because no other network will be compatible with this phone! So, you'll still be paying a monthly fee to Sprint... and you'll probably pay that fee for a while, to make use of the $900 you spent on the phone.
So, explain to me why you would want a contract-free Palm Pre.
Especially when you can just buy it for cheap on 2 year contract and just pay the $200 to get out whenever you want...that's what I do. Still cheaper than buying it unlocked.
For some reason everytime i read reviews about the pre it makes me hang on to my iphone 3g even more. I agree the Pre is indeed tempting however i prefer the whole ecosystem that comes with the iphone. On the other hand if for any reason i could also get my hands on the Pre it would be great unfortunately that would take time sometime since im still serving my contract.
I think the Pre looks great, for a first gen. The first iPhone had web apps (which the Pre is also limited to, even tho the pre stores them locally.) The first iPhone (and the second) didn't have video, the Pre doesn't. The first iPhone had paltry storage, like the Pre. The first iPhone had no apps, like the Pre. See where I'm going here, people?
Palm has been around a while, and I've used them for years. I started back with Handspring Treos (remember springboard modules?) and thru the Treo 700. I switched to iPhone after that. The Pre 1.0 is not enough to make me switch back, but it is pretty.
Now, Pre 2.0 or 3.0 may be better. Give it time before you hate. I watched Leo Laporte unbox this thing this afternoon, and it looks great. Multitasking, fantastic Google/Facebook integration for contacts, calendars, chat, etc. Sure, it needs some work, but what first gen product doesn't? (G1, anyone?)
I'm sticking with my iPhone for now, and hoping for an upgrade Monday, but I'm going to keep my eye on this Pre thing...
The Pre already has an app catalog and will have more applications as time goes on. Anybody that says they won't buy a product because of lack of extensive 3rd party apps is essentially saying they never plan on buying a 1st gen product, which is fine. Also, the Pre applications aren't really just web apps. Palm's IDE uses html/javascript/css to have a huge existing developer network, however they provide their own API's that allow you to do more on the Pre.
In the interest of full disclosure, my local Sprint store only had 8 and were sold out yesterday afternoon, so they put me on a waiting list and I expect to get it this week, but they did let me play with one and I was impressed. My biggest complaint is the 8 gigs of storage will force me to be smart with what I keep on there. I strongly considered an iphone, but was more excited to try something new and give linux some support. And yes, I'd have bought a G1 when it came out if T-mobile weren't so terrible where I live.
The Pre could be the savior of Sprint and Palm all in one swing!
wow, cleavage in a sprint store = hell frozed over.
Because you just recently "upgraded" your phone, Michael. That's why.
Because you don't NEED a new contract if you're already UNDER contract.
Look how happy everyone is getting the Pre.
iKurt needs to get iLaid
Chic's hot! Want! She on twitter?
People I bought the palm pre today in dallas got to meet demarcus ware and the moose. The iphone does not compare to the palm pre the card system alone blows the iphone out the water apple 3.0 better be the shit if not game over for apple
that chick serving drink is cute
Another of those american nonsenses? I've never seen a line for a phone at launch here in my country...
I was actually the blonde first in line in your chicago picture! I finagled my way in completely...I am a "premier" member, but didn't get any invitation and only saw your posting about the special launch party at about 3:30 pm

Gonna port it on webOS=)
hey man, the iphone is a great phone and definetly set the bar high. Now the Pre is here and is finally giving the iphone some competition. Out of the box the Pre is not better than the iphone, simply because after two years and a few generations they have fine tuned a beautiful product. I am more than willing to pay for a Pre though, the potential alone is worth my money. Give the Pre a couple months to run smoother, have more apps, and it will be an even better phone. Props to Apple for introducing a great phone, props to Palm for challenging Apple for top cell phone.
At this rate, they should sell a few thousand before Palm goes bankrupt.
I biked over this morning to the nearest Sprint Store next to UCLA to check out the Sprint!
I took some videos at the Sprint store and posted them here http://www.youtube.com/user/Coolarj10
(video quality is low because all I had was my Treo 700w's video camera)
-Touchstone requires a different back cover/battery cover than the standard glossy one.
-Camera snapshot/shutter speed is extremely fast (faster than iPhone?)
-Using Wikipedia Universal Search: Start at Engadget homepage, then zoom out and look up Palm Pre on Wikipedia using Universal Search!
-Keyboard slider speed: In the Engadget Palm Pre review, it said the slider would kind of stick. One of the models at the store did stick, but another one (which was probably used much more today) was extremely smooth with no stickiness whatsoever!
-I think the Engadget Palm Pre review mentioned that you can only dial numbers using the touch screen, and NOT using the physical keyboard?
It's fixed: You can dial using the touch screen AND physical keyboard - up to you!
-I think earlier we were all unsure under which calendar new items get added to? I found out from a Palm Pre rep at the store: You can either
a) choose which calendar is your "Default" calendar. Then, new calendar items you create will always be added to the default calendar.
b) You can also manually select which calendar the item gets added to (I didn't get to see this for myself though...)
I hope some of this information is useful! Enjoy!
Why the heck is ANYBODY going to a Sprint store to buy these? Just go to the nearest Radio Shack, and pick it up there. Radio Shack and Best Buy rebates are INSTANT, Sprint rebates are MAIL-IN. They cost the same thing. And there are no lines at Radio Shack. AND, if they don't have one for you, they can SELL YOU THE INVENTORY FROM ANOTHER STORE without you being there to pick it up. Then you just go get it without having to worry OR stand in another stupid line.
This morning I got to Radio Shack at 9:30, and the last one was being sold. Ouch. But they got online and said the store 5 miles away had one. The guy called the other store and said "Hey - I can sell your device out from under you and I get the commission, or you can put it on hold while this guy drives over and gets it and you get the commission." Needless to say he put it on hold. The original guy said if it wasn't there, to come back and he'd actually sell me one from another store where they couldn't give it away. Why would anybody go to a Sprint store where they're banking on you not sending in your rebate, and investing the money while they play games with you for 3 months???
Anyway, so far so good - It's all working, including the 1.0.2 OS update I downloaded and installed. Good luck, all.
Sorry, quick update. The Sprint store and Best Buy are more expensive than Radio Shack if you're buying accessories. I bought the touchstone and the belt case, and got 20% off the accessories. When you buy at Radio Shack, you get 10% off the first accessory, and if you buy two you get 20% off both! So again, why are people going to the Sprint store???
Looking through the photos, with a ton of frosted glass and 'Sprint' on one side, I ust noticed Sprint backwards. TNIRQ's? TNIRDS?
