This won't apply to many of you, but just a little public service announcement to members of
Sprint's elite Premier corps: you can get your
Pre tonight if you've received an invitation to do so and you're willing to make the trek to one of ten stores around the country where launch parties are being held. Our understanding is that this is strictly an invite-only event and that non-Premier riff raff (and non-Sprint customers) will be turned away, but honestly, if we were in the market for a Pre, we'd probably loiter for a bit just to see what's up and get a gauge on whether they're willing to bend the rules -- particularly if the Pres end up not selling out by the time the night's over. Either way, if you want a Pre this weekend you'll need to leave your basement at
some point because the phone won't be sold online initially -- so let us know how it goes out there in the trenches, folks, and we'll do the same. Stay tuned!

I'm getting mine tomorrow morning anyway. A few more hours of waiting isn't that bad.
really? damn dude you need to get your priorities straight.
"The wireless event of the year"
Bold words, sprint/palm...
The lack of comments on this Engadget article suggest somewhat otherwise.
Invite-only, hey?
Invite is a verb, not a noun. The word you're looking for is invitation.
That is all.
You are suffering from what is know as "Internet correction syndrome", please contact your physician immediately.
Or... not...

Lots of incorrect spellings / semantic errors are now entered in some dictionaries as 'informal' uses. Point is, it's wrong.
If you've come to Engadget expecting a shining example of The Queen's English, you'll be sorely disappointed on a regular basis. Truth be told, there's no need to point it out unless it's not an accepted variation.
Yeah, wtf is up grammar nazis? It's the internet foo, if you understood what was said then mission accomplished.
I'm so happy that American English happens to be a living language with the ability to evolve.
I'm not so happy that grammar/spelling nazis often forget this fact.
m-w.com says "invite" as a noun first came into use in 1659.
Scrolling's much smoother on the Pre than Iphone ... that seems to be one of the things that practically everyone who's used it has highlighted, especially when browsing the web.
i hope that paul guy isn't lurking in engadget
Look below
It's not just him but other trolls on engadget
I have no desiere to get a Pre. For one they are using Sprint, I used to work for sprint and had their service until earlier this year when I glady switched carriers to AT&T and got an iPhone 3G. Second, ITS A PALM!!!!! I have had so many palm devices over the years, starting with the palm III, IIIc, VII, and those were great as PDA's, but then I had a treo 300, 650, 700, and then my wife had a Centro. I have to tell you those were some of the biggest pieces of crap I have ever owned. Because of my past experiences with palm as a company I would NEVER have a desire to own another one of their products. And it being on sprint just adds insult to injury.
No one asked... nor does anyone care....
If they were that crappy, then why did you go through 4 of them? Plus this is a whole new OS. Palm has essentially had the same OS since the Palm IIIx days
if the 300, 650 and 700 where crap whey did you keep buying them?
I have sprint and AT&T a Treo 700 and the Blackberry Bold .. the bold drops gets the call failed once a day and the sprint treo never. I would say call droping and signal depend on where you live and work
I wonder how long before we see one of these dissected...?
I was talking to someone about this earlier. I'm kind of curious how they got everything to fit so nicely. It's a pretty small device.
Dont forget that the iphone needs to display checkerboards before it renders while scrolling, something neither the Pre or the G1 do...
Non Sprint customers will be turned away? I thought this was a phone to entice non Sprint customers to Sprint.
This is a pre-launch event (pre as in before not Pre like the device) and not the actual device launch. They won't be turning anyone away tomorrow morning!
You can't be a Premiere customer if you're not a sprint customer currently. You wouldn't even get the invite.
It's their rewards program for loyal customers. Non Sprint customers will have access to the phone tomorrow, as well as us non-Premier rabble.
@B3astofthe3ast, to be fair so does the Palm Prē, it just takes a faster flick of the wrist.
@madwh, either you just misquoted or you clearly didn't read the review, they are talking about touching close to the edge of the screen, nothing about scrolling.
What cities 10 cities are included??? Anyone know????
Just visited the RadioShack near 23rd off park south NYC and they ONLY HAVE 2 PREs....2....WTF and one is being used as a demo...WTF is up with that.. And they wont open the demo unit till tomorrow...WOW this is some real tight ish going on..
Ill have to be at Bestbuy near my house at 9am tomorrow just to be safe... even if i was a premiere customer id rather pay $199 and not have to worry about rebates..
lol scrolling cannot possibly be any slower than the iphone. I still love my iphone though =).
Im excited for wwdc, apple better bring it on!
I am a premiere customer (10 years!) but didn't get the invite... bummar. I am seriously considering getting a Pre, even though I don;t need one. Classic toy want.
Same here. After 11 years, you'd think they'd at least be able invite us to the party.
Punks.
I'm an S|P customer, too, having been with them since 1997, when they first launched their CDMA network in NY. Didn't get an invitation. I assume it's because I didn't explicitly sign up to be notified when the Pre went on sale (what's the point of being the first to experience the early issues?).

Sort of a pre-Pre launch?
i dont understand how u a-holes fully support and bow to a phone that hasn't been released and fully utilized .
i dont understand this fanboy bullshit. how is it better than iphone if yourself didn't try this shit out in real world use.
idiots are gassed up from youtube videos, what a bunch of dicks.
peace.
Well then how the hell is anybody going to buy anything? Once upon a time the iPhone was un-released and not fully utilized, you know what helped lead to that full utilization? PEOPLE BUYING IT!........................... dick.
No one here is saying it is better than the iphone. In fact there are only douche fanboys saying the iphone is better than it. And they haven't even touched it yet. So who is the dick here?

Someone answer this please because I'm genuinely interested:
On the Sprint Network, lets say you're streaming music (pandora, slacker, etc.) over EVDO and someone tries to call you.
Will the incoming call pause your data stream and allow you to answer or will the call go straight to VM like if you're streaming music over EDGE on GSM?
Does the pre let you take calls while you're streaming pandora tunes?
I would assume it stops the streaming so you can answer the call.
I currently have a WinMo phone on Sprint using the EVDO network. If I get a call while I'm streaming Pandora, the stream will pause while I take the call and restart (usually) when I hang up. I stream XM through the web a lot and have to refresh the site after a call, though. When you are downloading, the call takes priority and will pause the download.
Not sure about the Pre, but I'm assuming that since you can't use voice and data at the same time on EVDO that it will be the same deal.
Thanks everyone for the quick replies.
i was praying that it wouldn't route the call to voicemail like EDGE does.
thanks again!
Not sure what happens on webOS. I just tried this streaming SprintTV on my Rant and it didn't interrupt the session -- just went to voicemail after the normal ring count.
It will stop streaming and the call with go through. On the other side of it, while you are on the call, data transfer is suspended, so if you get a few emails while you're talking, they won't come through until you end your call. Same thing happens on my work blackberry.
I'm a sprint premiere customer and I never got that email! Maybe the LA launch party is for really ELITE people...
Yea I'm a premiere customer too and I haven't received an invite either. I signed up to be notified when the pre went on sale for premier customers and no go on that either.
I emailed Sprint yesterday, as a "premiere" customer and complained about the fact that I have not received any notifications about the Pre. They responded back with a $50 credit. I'll be getting my Pre for $149! Sometimes it helps to b*tch a bit. I told them that I pay $XXX amount every month that I want something for being a "Premiere" customer other than the response I got from my local store which was, "First come, first served." I expressed my dismay about being labeled as a "Premiere Customer" but not receiving any benefits because of it. I then compared it to being told I won a first class ticket....on Southwest Airlines.
anyone know where the party in new york city is?
Odd that I am a sprint premiere customer but did not get a offer!! I wonder if they weed out the people who complained to them repeatedly for being sonsabitches! Hehehe no worries, it's probably best that I didn't buy one right away. I'd really like to mess with one first before making that commitment.
just got off the phone with a rep and was told it is only for sprint premier members that were drawn at random with a location near by.
and than i was told i had to switch my plan from an everything with data added to an everything data plan. Sprint really doesnt want to sell these phones is what it sounds like.
Wow so palm expects 10 stores to even make a dent in sales,? LOL
Pre u r far from shattering iPhone Zero to million record in 72 hours it's pathetic.
This reminds me of those movies that some old fart critic gives 2 thumbs way up for some Elizabethan movie. Those same critics downranked ironman so hardcore thumbs down.
When the masses in record numbers making it highest grossing movie of 2008 in USA even critics had to take a second look., iPhone is ironmalike success due to critics shot it down n now look. Who's the the mutthachucka now,.?!!!!
